Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to complement the shortcomings of previous studies by examining the existence of cultural invasion in general, namely by selecting specific communities, in this case, the Ponorogo Regency, for the use of regional languages and social media as the focus of the discussion. This paper is based on the argument that the cultural invasion also penetrated the regional languages as part of the culture with the means of shifting, namely on social media. Through a survey method conducted on the people of Ponorogo Regency to fill out a questionnaire about the use of language on social media, it was found that the respondents actively used social media consisting of social networking, namely Facebook and Twitter, photo sharing, namely Instagram, and interactive media, namely TikTok. This data collection was carried out within three months, from July to September 2022. All respondents used social media to use Indonesian and foreign languages. Of all the respondents, apart from using this language, 28 respondents also used Javanese. Another 72 respondents only use Indonesian and foreign languages when surfing social media. However, compared to foreign languages, the number of Javanese users on social media is still more significant. This shows that cultural invasion did occur in Ponorogo, namely with the Javanese language, which experienced a shift from the primary language in communication because more people used Indonesian as the national language. In addition, the increasing use of foreign languages in social media shows symptoms of an even greater cultural invasion.

Abstract

This article examines the motives behind the decisions of the Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI), in 1980 and 2005, to issue fatwas condemning the Ahmadiyah. Using critical discourse analysis, this study reveals MUI’s motives behind its fatwas on the Ahmadiyah by drawing on the text and the context of the issuance of the fatwas. Underpinning MUI’s issuance of its fatwa on the Ahmadiyah Qadiyan in 1980 was the global rejection of the Ahmadiyah, particularly in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, MUI’s fatwa on the Ahmadiyah in 2005 was informed by an increased rejection of the Ahmadiyah in Indonesia, which was based on the Jalsa Salana Ahmadiyah meeting in 2005, in Parung, Bogor. In the fatwa’s dictum, MUI positions itself as the guardian of the Islamic creed. MUI’s choice of wording and language style in its fatwas demonstrates its desire to display its authority as a quasi-non-governmental organization.

Abstract

Fatwas are a form of persuasive argumentative discourse. This paper aims to describe the superstructure and structure of fatwa arguments regarding Akidah and Religious Traditions. The source of this paper's data is all fatwas of the fatwa commission of the Indonesian ulema council from 1975 to 2017. The method used to collect data and manage data is the document method. Discourse analysis methods are used to analyze data. The discussion of superstructure aspects utilizes Ashqar theory (1976) while Walthon theory (2006) is used to examine the structure of fatwa argumentation. The superstructure aspect of fatwas is realized by the Fatwa Commission of the Indonesian Ulema Council differently. All fatwa texts have presented substantial elements but formal elements are not included. The structure of fatwa argumentation is understood by the format of the text. For fatwas in the format of decrees, premise markers are identified through the vocabulary of "pay attention", "read", "weigh", and "remember" while conclusion markers are presented with the vocabulary of "decide", "establish", and "fatwa". Directly formatted fatwa texts are identified through inference, but some texts lack a premise and inference structure.

Abstract

Arabic names are not only used by Arab (descendants) but also by most Muslims in the world, including in Indonesia. This phenomenon will certainly be difficult when one wants to distinguish Arab (descendants) from non-Arabs who adopt Arabic or Islamic names. This study aimed to identify and explore the linguistic characteristics of the names of Arab descendants in Indonesia that distinguish them from the names of Muslim Javanese. By using population data samples in Pasar Kliwon Subdistrict taken from SIAK by Population and Civil Registration Agency Surakarta as of February 28, 2018, as many as 84,126 names were sorted and classified between Arab descendants and Muslim Javanese names using the onomastics framework. The results showed that the names of Arab descendants tended to use Arabic with the influence of the Yemeni dialect. The adoption of the name of the father and paternal grandfather also became another characteristic besides the presence of surname at the end of the proper name.

This study aims to determine the language choice of Indonesian ethnic Javanese, especially of the Brang Kidul of Ponoragan; based on the distinguishing vocabulary and intonation in the narrative. “Ponorogo Brang Kidul” is the designation for the southern part of Ponorogo Regency of the East Java Province. Employing qualitative research method, sociolinguistic approach, and research communication model, this research was conducted in the higher education community toward three respondents who are native Ponoragan Javanese speakers. The research data were obtained from recorded dialogues of speakers in four speech contexts between students and lecturers and between fellow students. The language code selection patterns found were Bahasa Jawa (BJ), Bahasa Jawa Ponoragan (BJP), Bahasa Arab (BA), and Bahasa Indonesia (BI) which would had been considered mainly based on situations, age, and social status. The BJP vocabularies frequently found in the Brang Kidul dialect were "alah mendah", "ritek", "byungalaah", "angkan", "gor", "ale", "klawus", "dipadoni", and "kesit". Finally, found that factors influencing the choice of language in this study were the interlocutors and the topic of conversation as well as the intonation in the speech of the different speakers, namely the rising tone at the beginning of the speech and falling at the end.
