Abstract

Morphologically, Ammya Egyptian Arabic or Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA) has specific word patterns. This study is aimed at describing morphological rules of the ECA. The data were obtained through interviews using recording technique with ECA speakers in Cairo and Ismaili. They were analyzed using distributional method, a method of data analysis to connect phenomena in a given language itself. The result indicates that ECA has some word patterns which have diverse manifestations. Such diversity can be seen that V can be filled by the vowels [a], [i] and [u], C can be filled by all consonants in the ECA. In perfective verbs there are verbs patterns with singular first personal pronoun and singular masculine second personal pronoun affixes which can only be distinguished by context. A phenomenon was found that the ECA only has syllables of CV, CVC, CVVC, but not CCV, CCVC.

Abstract

Proverbs that employ metaphors are deeply rooted in the social and cultural life of a society, often drawing from animals and plants. These proverbs reflect the characteristics and identity of a community while delivering messages in an easily understandable manner. This study examines the metaphor of the "dog" in Egyptian proverbs, employing a semantic cognitive and conceptual metaphor approach. The study focuses on the forms of the dog metaphor and its representation in Egyptian Arabic proverbs. A descriptive qualitative research method was used, with data collected using the SBLC method. The data were analyzed through the referential matching method. The study found 11 proverbs that use the word "dog" as a metaphor. The conceptualization of the dog metaphor is predominantly based on the dog's state, drawing on the relationship between humans and dogs as an analogy for human characteristics or conditions. The use of "dog" as a metaphor in these proverbs represents various human traits, including both good and bad characteristics, excessive talkers, lost individuals, as well as communities (civil and governmental) and individual traits.

Abstract

Abstract Arabic has nouns that are typically formed through the isytiqaq process. This formation results from the derivation of verbs based on regular word patterns. However, in the development of the age Arabic nouns have been enriched with additional terms from other languages, especially English to form new nouns. By using qualitative descriptive methods, we grouped Arabicized nouns derived from English. Nouns from other languages are not as easily identifiable as pre-existing Arabic nouns (ism). The following paper explains the importance of identifying the form of these nouns. By comparing the characteristics of existing nouns with this method, nouns with recognizable forms are identified. Nouns from other languages or ism mu'arrab can be classified ism jins, ism jama', ism nisbah, ism maqsur, and ism mamdud. The formation can include both single nouns and acronyms. The findings indicate that Arabicized nouns are not widely used in contemporary Arabic sentences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how cultural identity negotiation occurs in the Indonesian subtitles of the Arabic Netflix series Baitu Tahir and how this process affects word-level equivalence. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with subtitling analysis techniques based on Gottlieb’s (1992) translation strategy theory and Baker’s (2018) equivalence theory. Data were collected from three out of six episodes of Baitu Tahir, covering the beginning, middle, and end of the series. The analysis process involved identifying categories of cultural terms (Newmark, 1988) as well as the translation strategies used. Cultural identity negotiation in subtitles impacts word-level equivalence, where some terms are retained, adjusted, or even omitted for readability and audience comprehension. The findings of this study provide insights into how translators navigate the challenges of transferring cultural elements from Arabic to Indonesian in an audiovisual context. This study asserts that subtitle translation is not merely a linguistic process but also a complex form of cultural negotiation. Future research is recommended to expand the scope of data by analyzing more Arabic series from various streaming platforms and exploring how audiences perceive and accept cultural negotiation in subtitles.

Abstract

This article presented the subtitles transparency from the Netflix series Baitu Tahir. Additionally, the implications of transparency were illustrated on dynamic equivalence. In this article, the Arabic and Indonesian subtitles were analyzed from the first episode, focusing on 569 data points using a descriptive qualitative comparative method. In this study, Venuti's theory identified translation techniques, while Nida's theory examined dynamic equivalence. The analysis revealed that foreignization (literal translation, transposition, and borrowing) and domestication (omission, transposition, addition, and adaptation) are both employed, with 68 instances of foreignization and 501 of domestication. The findings indicated that domestication is used more frequently to create a natural effect in Indonesian, the target language (TL). The balance of dynamic equivalence and transparency was crucial for ensuring subtitle accessibility while preserving cultural nuances. The study underscores the importance of strategic translation choices in subtitling, ultimately contributing to a better understanding of how foreign and domestic elements influence viewers' comprehension and the overall quality of translated content on global platforms like Netflix.

Abstract

Elliptical cohesion is a part of research in the field of translation science, namely the expression of meaning from one language to another language as intended by the author. This study aims to identify the types of ellipsis cohesion found in Kitab Al-Furuq by KH. Zainal Abidin Munawwir and its Indonesian translation. It also seeks to analyze the translation strategies employed by the translator in handling ellipsis. Kitab Al-Furuq, which translates to ‘several differences’ in Indonesian, is one of the works of KH. Zainal Abidin Munawwir from the Al-Munawwir Islamic boarding school in Krapyak, Yogyakarta. It consists of 39 chapters across 60 pages, discussing differences in several Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) rulings related to worship practices. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, using translational, comparative, and interpretative approaches. The analysis identified 54 instances of ellipsis cohesion, consisting of 27 nominal ellipses, 8 verbal ellipses, and 19 clausal ellipses. Ellipsis in the source language, Arabic, when translated into the target language, Indonesian, results in different types, forms, and meanings. This variation occurs due to the distinct linguistic characteristics of Arabic and Indonesian. These ellipsis findings contribute to making both the source and target texts more concise, dense, and efficient while avoiding word repetition.
