Abstract

Dental caries is a condition that attacks the hard tissues of the teeth which is influenced by various factors, including host, agent (food), and environment. This study assessed the oral health status of primary school students attending SD Klangon, in Sedayu, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the convenience sampling method to collect a sam-ple of grade IV and V students. After obtaining written parental consent, nine children agreed to participate in the oral clinical eva-luation. The def-t index was used to assess the oral health status of each student. The results of this study revealed a caries pre-valence of 100% among the subjects, and none of them were caries-free. Males had a mean def-t of 3.1, while females had 1. Children under 12 years old had a mean def-t score of 3.89, which was greater than that of children older than 12 years (0.22). The calculation results showed a total value of (d) (e) (f)-t of 36 resulting in a def-t index value of 4. It was concluded that the in-dex value fell into the moderate category, the average child examined at SD Klangon had 4 teeth affected by caries.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HT) are noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) with high prevalence in Indonesia and contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality rates. Sleman Regency, particularly Turi District, has a high number of DM and HT cases, but community involvement in screening and education efforts is still limited. This study aims to increase community awareness and knowledge about NCD prevention through community-based health screening and education activities. The implementation method uses a health social service design that includes participant registration, health screening (measurement of blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, uric acid, height, and weight), and education related to DM and HT. Knowledge levels were evaluated using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The activity was attended by 47 participants from Dadapan Hamlet. Screening results showed that 23 people had hypertension, 7 had diabetes mellitus, 3 had asthma, 2 had heart disease, 2 had breast cancer, and 10 had a family history of NCDs. Analysis of the pre-test and post-test showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge about DM and HT after education, with the majority of respondents able to answer all post-test questions correctly. These findings confirm that health screening and NCD education are effective in increasing public understanding and awareness, and can be an important strategy in the prevention and control of NCDs at the community level.
