Abstract

Indonesians have been using herbal medicines for a long time to cure some illnesses. Carica papaya L is an example of an herb that contains papain enzymes, saponins, lysozymes, lipases, flavonoids, polyphenols and vitamin C. These  ingredients are believed to be beneficial for the wound healing process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of topical application of ethanolic extract of Carica papaya L to the healing process of rat mouth ulcer. Subjects were 32 Wistar rats divided into 2 groups (control group and treatment group), each group containing 16 rats. All subjects were made to suffer from ulcers using glacial acetyl acid applied for 40 seconds in the buccal mucosa. Treatment group was treated with papaya leaf ethanolic extract on ulcers twice a day using microbrush, while the ulcer in the control group was not treated with the extract. The ulcerated tissue was biopsied and stained with H&E. Observations were performed on the day 0, 3rd, 7th and 12th on HE slides. Data were observed by looking at three indicators of wound healing i.e. macrophage, angiogenesis and re-epithelisation. Number of macrophages and angiogenesis were analyzed using two-way ANOVA. Data of epithelial thickness were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. The post hoc test in the treatment group and the control group on day 0 showed results of p = 1.00. On day 3, day 7 and day 12, the result of p was <0.05. In the treatment group on day 0 compared to the treatment group on the 3rd, 7th, 12th day, the results were p<0.05. In the treatment group on the 3rd day compared to the 7th and 12th days the results were p>0.05. The treatment group on the 7 day compared to the treatment group on the 12 day had p>0.05. In the control group, on day 0 compared to day 3, the results of p>0.05, while the control group day 0 with day 7, 12 had a result of p<0.05. The control group on the 3rd day was compared with the 7th day. The 12th also had a result of p<0.05. The comparison between the 7 day control groups showed p of >0.05. These data suggest that the papaya leaf ethanolic extract could accelerate the healing of oral ulcer on the buccal mucosa of wistar rats.

Abstract

Background: Oral candidiasis is a common opportunistic infection of the oral cavity caused by an overgrowth of the Candida species, in particular, Candida albicans. The incidence varies depending on age and certain predisposing factors. In the practice of dentistry, doctor-patient communication is an important component. Effective communication between doctor and patient is needed to convey information and educate patients so that treatment can be administered appropriately. Purpose: This case aimed to discuss the clinical appearance of acute pseudomembranous candidiasis (APC) in children and the importance of good communication, information and education of patients. Case: A five-year-old male patient came with his mother on November 6, 2020 complaining of white deposits on the mucosa of the upper and lower lips that had been present for a week. Case management: The diagnosis was defined as a typical APC lesion although the potassium hydroxide (KOH) test showed negative results. Characteristic lesions found in APC are often seen clearly in some cases and treatment can begin immediately. Patients receive the empirical therapy, Nystatin oral suspension 100.000 i.u, and the patient is instructed to maintain optimal oral hygiene care, maintain nutrient intake and book a follow-up consultation. Conclusion: Mistakes in patient preparation procedures in taking supporting examinations will result in false negative/positive results, so communication and education information regarding the preparation of supporting examinations for patients is important to note.

Abstract

Approximately 90% of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS have encountered Oral Candidiasis during the progression of their disease, especially in patients with a reduced CD4+ 200 mm3. Oral Candidiasis is a prevalent opportunistic infection of the oral cavity. Reported a case of a patient with oral candidiasis in an HIV/AIDS with CD4+ below 50 and discussed the mechanism of molecular relationship decreasing count CD4+ with virulence of Candida Albicans. In this report, we present a case of a 35-year-old female who presented with oral candidiasis. The patient's CD4+ count test revealed a level below 50 and HIV test I-II-III reactive. Human immunodeficiency Virus causes a decrease in CD4+ count and leads to opportunistic oral candidiasis infection.

Abstract

Introduction: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (SAR) is a common condition characterized by recurrent small, round, or ovoid multiple ulcers with clear boundaries and forming circles. The etiology of SAR is not yet clear, but some literature says SAR can be caused by psychological stress. Environmental changes and re-adaptation during the COVID-19 pandemic can affect stress levels. Materials and Methods: The type of research conducted is analytical observational studies with a cross-sectional design. The research sample was 226 respondents of the undergraduate dental program at the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) class of 2019, 2020, 2021. Each respondent filled out the RASDX questionnaire to find out the existence of SAR and the PSS-10-C questionnaire to assess stress levels in the form of a google form. Then, the data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 with a contingency coefficient test to see the relationship between stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and the incidence of SAR. Results and Discussion: The results showed that the majority of respondents were positive for SAR (20.3%). A total of 12 male respondents were positive for SAR (5.4%) and 34 female respondents were positive for SAR (15%). Measurements of stress levels attributed by the COVID-19 pandemic showed the majority of respondents experienced moderate stress (63.7%). A total of 12 respondents with mild stress, 33 respondents with moderate stress, and 1 respondent with severe stress were positive SAR. The results of the contingency coefficient test showed a value of p = 0.334. Conclusion: There is no relationship between stress during the COVID-19 pandemic and the incidence of SAR. This is thought to be because the causative factors of SAR are multifactorial.

Abstract

The most prevalent oral mucosal lesion is Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS). SAR can occur due to local trauma, stress, drug use, hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, immunological factors, smoking, hereditary and genetic factors, microbial factors, food hypersensitivity, hematinic deficiencies, and human immunodeficiency (HIV) infection. RAS is a prevalent condition that is defined by the presence of round ulcers that appear as recurrent lesions, numerous, small, round, have a yellowish base, and are surrounded by an erythematous halo and can occur in young and adult ages. Specifically, the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has affected people's lives around the world, including senior high school students. The incidence of RAS in adolescents is categorized as high; according to the findings of RISKESDAS, the percentage is 8.7%. Stress is a contributing component to the development of RAS. The objective of this investigation was to ascertain the correlation between stress and the prevalence of RAS during the COVID19 pandemic. This investigation employed a cross-sectional design and was observational analytic. A total of 104 research subjects were included in the study, which was conducted on students at SMA Negeri 6 in Yogyakarta. The results revealed 59 respondents with normal stress levels, of which 57 respondents (54.8%) were positive for RAS. The Spearman Rank correlation statistical test was employed to analyze the data, resulting in a significant value of p = 0.019 or 0.05, which denotes a correlation stress and the occurrence of RAS during the COVID-19 pandemic in students at SMA 6 Yogyakarta, serving as the conclusion

Abstract

Introduction: Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS) is an inflammation on the oral mucosa, presenting as recurrent, round, single, or multiple ulcers with well-defined boundaries. Although the exact etiology of RAS remains unknown, several factors are known to contribute to its development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, various problems have arisen, especially among adolescents, including senior high school students, whose sleep patterns-specifically their sleep time, duration, and quality-have been disrupted. These disruptions may weaken their immune system, making them more susceptible to RAS disease. The objective of this study is to analyze the relationship between sleep patterns, bedtime, and the occurrence of RAS during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: The research design employed was an analytical observational study, with a cross-sectional approach. Purposive sampling was used to select all class XI students of SMA  6 Yogyakarta, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The research instruments included the PSQI questionnaire (used to measure sleep patterns, sleep time, sleep duration, and sleep quality) and the RASDX questionnaire (a diagnostic tool for measuring the prevalence of RAS lesions) both administered via Google Forms. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test. Results: A total of 58 students (55.8%) experienced RAS, with a higher prevalence among female students. Regarding age, 16-year-old students had the highest incidence of RAS, with 79 students (64.4%) affected. Most respondents, 79 respondents (76%), were reported to have good sleep patterns. The results of the bivariate analysis also revealed a significant relationship between sleep patterns, bedtime, and the occurrence of RAS (p=0.043<0.05). Conclusion: Sleep patterns, bedtime, and the occurrence of RAS were found to be interrelated during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Dental caries is a condition that attacks the hard tissues of the teeth which is influenced by various factors, including host, agent (food), and environment. This study assessed the oral health status of primary school students attending SD Klangon, in Sedayu, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the convenience sampling method to collect a sam-ple of grade IV and V students. After obtaining written parental consent, nine children agreed to participate in the oral clinical eva-luation. The def-t index was used to assess the oral health status of each student. The results of this study revealed a caries pre-valence of 100% among the subjects, and none of them were caries-free. Males had a mean def-t of 3.1, while females had 1. Children under 12 years old had a mean def-t score of 3.89, which was greater than that of children older than 12 years (0.22). The calculation results showed a total value of (d) (e) (f)-t of 36 resulting in a def-t index value of 4. It was concluded that the in-dex value fell into the moderate category, the average child examined at SD Klangon had 4 teeth affected by caries.
