Abstract

Abstract. This research is oriented toward the role of registers in mowindahako custom. This qualitative research is focused on the lexis and speech of mowindahako from a Sociolinguistics perspective. The data collected and carried out through direct observations during customs be held and interviews with the participants in open-ended question perspective. The data were analyzed using BUL/Sharing Elements technique, coding according to the research object variables and thematic analysis, and ethnoscience analysis. The results showed that its register is divided into 2 types of expression, both are verbal expression in high formalistic poetic diglossia (wua-wua ndulura) and non-lingual (non-verbal: the things, body movements of participants in the mombesara process, and 4 traditional participants). Register used acts as a code or signal for the participants in the interaction process. This is an abstract and concrete realization of metafunction whose discourse provides an understanding of the purpose and meaning of mowindahako which has a philosophical function. This function is seen through the ideational, participants' ideational, logical, and experiential concepts al concept is based on the discourse in the mombesara process and the interpersonal traditional participants. Mowindahako's register construction ultimately showed the world what Tolakinese society is and how they are by through complex verbal and non-verbal metafunctions and stratification, axiological cognition, and their mindset and outlook on life. Keywords: Register, Diglossia, Metafunctions, Mowindahako, Mombesara

Abstract

This study aims to determine, analyze, and describe the person deixis and the polarity of the use of the deixis, based on the Yule deixis theory. The deixis analysis in this study is not only looking for the existing deixis persona but also looking at the correlation in the grammatical deixis category in lingual units. The analysis is then connected with the concepts of competence and performance in the linguisic deixis unit to see the concepts of language and thinking of the writers in this novel. It is all the basis of the novelty of this study. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design that is consistent with linguisic research. Data collection techniques were carried out through qualitative methods, that is, the method of distribution using the BUL technique or direct division of data into the lingual unit and the analysis of the Spradely ethnic method to determine the domain, taxonomy, and componential person deixis. The data in this research include the written lingual unit whose marker of reference and types indicates or is recorded as deixis. The main data source is a series of stories from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, particularly A Scandal in Bohemia which consists of three parts. The results of the analysis show that the persona in speech has other functions: as nominating, objective, and genitive markers. The polarity of the person deixis indirectly determines the concept of the author's competence and performance which unconsciously shapes the dominance and strength of the character that determines the centrality of the character and then also the storyline.

Abstract

The study in this research is oriented to the analysis and description of inferences on the context and a comprehensive understanding of other linguistic variables in the text and discourse in it. The research data are lingual lexical units and phrases that show the relation of synonymy and polysemy meanings in the narrative text of the comic "Smile Brush: My Old Pictures" by Waroo, which can be accessed on the Webtoon platform. The data is processed using descriptive qualitative linguistic research characteristics combined with ethnoscience analysis. Data was occupied by the distribution method using the BUL/Direct Element Sharing technique and coding. The result states that this inference is the conclusion of cognition based on the context built by involving participants, awareness, and over-paradigmatic relations to syntagmatic other ties. This inference is the role of the association of meaning to other linguistic units in understanding the context in terminating inference. The process and conclusion of all these factors and variables show the stimulative, systemic, and holistic linguistic correlation of metafunctions and stratification of linguistic domains.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the challenges faced by EFL students when creating digital content during online service learning amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Six students from the English Education Department at a higher education institution in Southeast Sulawesi participated in this study, selected based on their involvement in online service-learning activities during the pandemic. Data were collected through reflective journals. The findings revealed that participants encountered various internal and external challenges. Internal challenges included technical issues such as difficulties in memorizing scripts, editing videos, selecting suitable editing applications, designing thumbnails, and creating captions, all requiring creativity. Situational internal challenges involved filming independently, selecting appropriate content, engaging effectively in collaboration, and managing publicity. Emotional challenges encompassed uncertainty about starting the video production process and maintaining patience during the content creation. External technical issues included unstable internet connections and limited camera storage. Situational external challenges involved environmental noise, poor weather conditions, and the requirement to independently produce ten content videos.

Abstract

Non-EFL students frequently encounter challenges in understanding and applying the English for Scientific Purposes (ESP) taught in the first year of university. This problem provokes questions regarding the extent to which ESP meets students' academic and professional needs, as well as its relevance to the curriculum and the demands of the working world after they graduate. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the implementation of ESP in this context, and to critically assess its effectiveness and impact.  This qualitative research uses reflection and semi-structured interviews as its instruments. The participants in this study were 77 students who were enrolled in different study programs across four faculty. Data obtained from participants' answers and responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. The result indicate that students generally perceive a strong connection and correlation between ESP and the curriculum, scince, and professionalism. In addition, this study also revealed students' experiences during ESP, the influence they perceive, and the contribution of ESP to their academic development. This finding imply that, closer collaboration between lecturers, study programs, and students is recommended to ensure that ESP is not only theoretical, but also has a sustainable practical impact and is relevant to the needs of the working world. The ESP taught should focus on the relevance of the course to the major and study program, while also enhancing students' proficiency in producing scientific articles that are suitable for publication.
