Abstract

The study in this research is oriented to the analysis and description of inferences on the context and a comprehensive understanding of other linguistic variables in the text and discourse in it. The research data are lingual lexical units and phrases that show the relation of synonymy and polysemy meanings in the narrative text of the comic "Smile Brush: My Old Pictures" by Waroo, which can be accessed on the Webtoon platform. The data is processed using descriptive qualitative linguistic research characteristics combined with ethnoscience analysis. Data was occupied by the distribution method using the BUL/Direct Element Sharing technique and coding. The result states that this inference is the conclusion of cognition based on the context built by involving participants, awareness, and over-paradigmatic relations to syntagmatic other ties. This inference is the role of the association of meaning to other linguistic units in understanding the context in terminating inference. The process and conclusion of all these factors and variables show the stimulative, systemic, and holistic linguistic correlation of metafunctions and stratification of linguistic domains.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe English language is widely spoken worldwide and is the primary medium of cross-communication in international and intercultural contexts. This study is intended to analyze (1) the types of communication strategies (CSs) used by EFL students when they face the communication problem with the interlocutors and (2) the most frequent CSs used by EFL students when they interact in both face to face (F2F) and online contexts. This research applied a narrative review study with analysis content as a qualitative methodological approach. In total, there were 38 relevant articles reviewed, which consisted of 30 articles for F2F and 8 articles for online context. The current study used typology by and Nakatani, (2014) to analyze the CSs’ types. The results revealed that EFL students employ 34 various CSs; however, fillers strategy is the most frequent CSs used in the F2F environment. Meanwhile, the code-switching strategy is the most commonly used in an online environment. Thus, this research has implications for foreign language teaching in higher education for both lecturers and students. Lecturers may design activities and lessons that focus on practicing and developing students' proficiency in using various CSs.Keywords: Communication strategies; EFL students; face-to-face environment; online context

Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' challenges in learning grammar using the task repetition approach in collaborative writing and video-based tasks. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with second semester students at an Islamic higher education institution in Southeast Sulawesi and then analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that most participants had both positive and negative experiences. However, this study emphasises the number of challenges that students face when repeating assignments. The main challenges are categorized into two main areas: task performance and collaboration. The findings underline the importance of understanding and addressing these negative experiences in order to design effective interventions to support students in online collaborative learning environments. It also provides valuable insights for educators aiming to improve teaching strategies and students' collaborative task performance.   Keywords: Task repetition; students’ challenges, learning Grammar

Abstract

This study aims to explore and narrate the culture shock experienced by the first author, an Indonesian EFL exchange student, during an academic exchange program at a Midwestern university in the United States. Using an autoethnographic approach, data were collected from the author's personal reflections, journals, and social media archives, then analyzed through a narrative method to present the lived experiences in a clear, chronological structure. The findings reveal that the first author experienced a range of emotions throughout all four stages of culture shock: honeymoon, frustration, adjustment, and adaptation. Each stage had a notable impact on his academic performance, emotional well-being, and motivation to engage with the host university’s academic and social environments. The study highlights the importance of cultural readiness and emotional resilience for exchange students. It also recommends that higher education institutions strengthen orientation programs and offer more holistic, culturally responsive support systems to help students navigate cross-cultural transitions effectively.

Abstract

Non-EFL students frequently encounter challenges in understanding and applying the English for Scientific Purposes (ESP) taught in the first year of university. This problem provokes questions regarding the extent to which ESP meets students' academic and professional needs, as well as its relevance to the curriculum and the demands of the working world after they graduate. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the implementation of ESP in this context, and to critically assess its effectiveness and impact.  This qualitative research uses reflection and semi-structured interviews as its instruments. The participants in this study were 77 students who were enrolled in different study programs across four faculty. Data obtained from participants' answers and responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. The result indicate that students generally perceive a strong connection and correlation between ESP and the curriculum, scince, and professionalism. In addition, this study also revealed students' experiences during ESP, the influence they perceive, and the contribution of ESP to their academic development. This finding imply that, closer collaboration between lecturers, study programs, and students is recommended to ensure that ESP is not only theoretical, but also has a sustainable practical impact and is relevant to the needs of the working world. The ESP taught should focus on the relevance of the course to the major and study program, while also enhancing students' proficiency in producing scientific articles that are suitable for publication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the adaptation of government education policies from the pandemic period in Southeast Sulawesi, which are relevant to the current Regional Development Plan. The focus of this study is on policy implementation, challenges in learning access, and the solutions implemented. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with primary data collected through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders in the education sector, including government officials, teachers, principals, educational staff, and students. Secondary data was gathered by examining government policy documents, learning guides, and associated reports. The results suggest that the implementation of learning policies in schools has not achieved complete congruence with national policy regulations. In response, various forms of policy adaptation are implemented at the school level, including modifications to learning strategies and increased parental involvement, which reflect the initiatives of local governments and schools aimed at meeting educational needs. A persistent challenge that has emerged as a primary concern in the execution of regional educational policies concerns the equitable provision of educational opportunities to all students.
