Abstract

Veil is not only accepted as a religious obligation but also a medium of modernization and lifestyle transformation. In certain cases, it will be imposed toward becoming ideology through various regulatory and governmental institutions. Therefore, veil is perceived as goodness and person's identity. Social conditions have changed about the veil in Indonesia. It causes a natural understanding for policewomen to also wear jilbab as well as other Muslim women, without having to be restricted by certain state regulations, including police regulations. Unfortunately, the recognition process becomes increasingly complex discourse. This paper examines three online media: kompas.com, tempo.co, and republika.co.id in the issue of the political identity of wearing jilbab by a policewoman. Using critical discourse analysis, the article shows that each of the three media has character to present the information in the certain objectification theme, in which they have an important role in influencing the policy by constructing public awareness of identity for certain goals. Keywords:Media, Political Identity, and Public Awareness

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This research addresses the problem of religious education in Indonesia, which often focuses solely on theological education and causes alienation among religious communities. The study aims to explore religious literacy as an alternative to bridge this gap. This qualitative research uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough, analyzing one transcript based on a video lecture in an academic setting, four videos on international seminars, one short school video, and two talk shows on “Religious Literacy Indonesia” on YouTube. The analysis examines how religious literacy is described in the current religious education discourse, identifies the scholars involved, and explores the implications of religious literacy on the discourse of religious education. The result shows that religious literacy in Indonesia has adapted to government policies and educational needs, focusing on practical skills for religious teachers and extension officers. It collaborates with the government for effectiveness but remains mostly within academic circles, with limited public understanding. Challenges include maintaining religious identity and boundaries in interfaith learning. Religious literacy is expected to build social trust, which requires creating shared moral spaces among different religions and aiming for positive outcomes in interfaith relations.

Abstract

This research aims to comprehensively understand how Islam has influenced the fundamental discussions within the Islamic Environmentalism movement, explicitly concerning agriculture and traditional knowledge systems. The study analyzed 103 scholarly articles and publications from Google Scholar, covering the period from 2011 to 2023. The search was conducted on December 14, 2023, using the keyword 'Dewi Sri.' The results show that cultural and agricultural factors specific to the region influence the Javanese agroecological perspective. In contrast, Islamic agroecological methods are shaped by the integration of Islamic teachings, particularly the concept of Green Islam, to create food systems that are both sustainable and self-regulating. However, the specific mechanism by which Islam affected alterations in traditional agricultural knowledge systems cannot be well elucidated using broad terms. It is essential to acknowledge that understanding the role of Islam in influencing the transformation of traditional agriculture knowledge in the Islamic environmentalism movement can facilitate collaboration within the Muslim community. This fact can serve as a valuable resource for integrating Javanese values without posing a threat to the integrity of Islam but instead as an opportunity to demonstrate that Islam also shares the same commitment to environmental preservation.

Abstract

Most studies refer to food as a symbol of salvation in Javanese beliefs. However, only some of these studies linked the interpretation of Javanese beliefs about the concept of salvation with values of environmental ethics. This research aims to uncover other interpretations of Javanese life ethics about environmental issues embedded in cultural rituals’ food symbols. The objects of this research are two traditions in Javanese society. First, Takir Plontang, ritual which is held by people of Junjung Village, Tulungagung Regency. Second, GrebegPancasila in Blitar City. The Javanese community organizes Takir Plontang Ritual at the beginning of the new year, Suro, by eating together at the village crossroads. As for Grebeg Pancasila, it is an annual activity of Blitar City to celebrate the birth of Pancasila every June 1 and this activity has five gunungan kirab festival as an expression of gratitude for the crops. The research used participant observation and interview methods to collect data. Unlike other Javanese ritual studies focusing on spiritual values in Javanese ceremonies which emphasize social cohesion, this study wishes to connect how far the concept of salvation symbolized through food in Javanese celebration ceremonies is linked to environmental ethics by balancing human and non-human relationships. The results showed that, in general, Javanese people connect Takir Plontang ritual as a gathering to pray for the salvation of their families and descendants. They believe that this ritual is a means to connect them with their ancestors and strengthen human inner power as a source of life balance. The imbalance between human inner power and the environment will cause disasters. As for the other ritual, people believe in seeking blessings from the crops in the five gunungan which have been prayed for in Bung Karno’s grave, has power beyond the world. People enthusiastically compete for part of the five gunungan as a form of gratitude for crops, respect, and blessings from God. Food symbolizes balance and salvation in rituals and festivals, highlighting nature as part of their lives and contributing to human welfare. However, nature is not valued as a subject/agency as the subject of ethics but as a medium and consequence in the relationship between people and their ancestors and spirits.

Abstract

Most ritual meanings are often constructed only as a medium to maintain social harmony and religious tolerance or, in the most straightforward language, as a ‘rasa syukur’ to God. Thus, the depictions of rituals in the mass media do not convey the moral code of nature as highlighted. Based on these considerations, this research wants to discover ritual discourse and its relationship with nature. In particular, this study focuses on online news published by various websites using the keyword ‘baritan.’ The data was collected on May 23-25, 2023, with data coverage from 2018 - 2023, while obtaining 136 news articles. The data were analyzed using Van Dijk’s method of discourse analysis, which seeks to reveal social cognition using a linguistic analysis approach. Although this research will not talk much about power, it wants to determine the dominance of discourse in depicting ritual and ecology in the media. The other theory to portray the result is Bruno Latour’s concept about the Parliament of Things and how to represent the ‘non-humans’ in this political democracy. This concept of political democracy is constructed based on two things: (1) science and technology and (2) nature that can be connected to become an arena for political practices. This research reveals that the media’s construction of rituals has a major effect dominating the discourse on ritual actors, actions, and networks. The dominance of this discourse makes the knowledge that should be local/personal not get enough space to develop, especially regarding the moral messages stored in rituals. Cultural interpretations of ecological issues may be personal experiences not covered by global meanings. By revealing the diversity of local meanings about the relationship between nature and humans through the baritan ritual, it is hoped that this ritual can become a ‘Parliament of Things’ where actors, human and non-human, feel each other’s presence and rebuild commitments for the sustainability of the actors’ lives

Abstract

This study investigates a controversial Facebook post prosecuted under Indonesian hate speech law, focusing on a “bad prayer” directed at the president during the 2019 election period. This research was a case study of a hate speech that the Tembilahan District Court, Indragiri Hilir, Riau, decided. The data was collected from the case trial on the website of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia and the associated Facebook group.  Employing semantic, sociolinguistic, and pragmatic analyses, the research explores how religious language can serve as a vehicle for politically motivated hate speech. Findings indicate that the expression, namely “Congratulations on the presidential inauguration, may he meet his end as soon as possible. Amen", constitutes minor hate speech by violating politeness principles and implying negative social judgment. The statement is motivated by the competition between two candidates in the 2019 presidential election, where the accused disapproved of the elected President Joko Widodo. This interdisciplinary approach contributes to forensic linguistics by introducing the concept of “bad prayer” and examining its sociopolitical and legal implications in Southeast Asian digital discourse.
