Abstract

The Al-Zaytun issue has ignited a heated debate in Indonesia about religious pluralism, religious freedom, and human rights. This quandary, reminiscent of the Indonesian Ahmadiyya Muslim Congregation's situation classified as "heretical," demonstrates the historical tendency to pigeonhole alternative ideas. This highlights the hidden presence of takfiri ideology, a potentially divisive force despite its relative obscurity. In this context, this article examines the contentious Al-Zaytun case, in which the rejection of non-traditional Islamic teachings prompts a broader examination of the conflict between entrenched traditional practices, which represent the majority of Indonesian Muslims, and fundamental human rights principles, particularly religious freedom. Using an analytical method, it dissects media portrayals and examines the legal framework established by KUHP 2023, addressing religious violations and belief-based areas. The essay explores the case's potential under the prior KUHP 2021 through comparative research, revealing the various issues of interpreting and applying legislation in cases of blasphemy and religious disagreements. The study says that varied Sharia interpretations within Islam should not be used to justify restricting religious freedoms, mirroring Boaventura's interpretation of Talal Asad's discoveries, which confirm Islam's diversity of religious experiences and adaptive Sharia interpretations. Indonesia faces the challenge of cultivating a nuanced perspective that preserves individual liberty and communal harmony while balancing the intricate interaction of religious dynamics, legal systems, and human rights.

Abstract

Due to the presence of migrants and three large mosques that serve as centers of religious activities, 6,183 housewives in Pogung Kidul, or 18.02%, begin to interact with the growing diversity. Given their significant roles in promoting an open and inclusive understanding of religion within their families and social circles, this study aims to analyze how grassroot women’s interactions and involvement influence their perspectives on interfaith relations. Employing purposive sampling followed by semi-structured interviews with six housewives from the three large mosques of Pogung Kidul, namely Pogung Raya Mosque, Pogung Dalangan Mosque, and Pogung Baru Mosque, this qualitative study intends to investigate the complex interaction between women’s understanding of interfaith relations and the variables that influence their perspectives. Personal life experiences and the interaction of religious teachings emerged as the two primary factors that shaped their understanding and behavior within the context of the social community. They then internalized religious and social ethics, resulting in performative behaviors and attitudes that demonstrate piety and symbolize the spirit of Islamic revivalism while fostering positive social relations in an interreligious setting.

Abstract

This research aims to comprehensively understand how Islam has influenced the fundamental discussions within the Islamic Environmentalism movement, explicitly concerning agriculture and traditional knowledge systems. The study analyzed 103 scholarly articles and publications from Google Scholar, covering the period from 2011 to 2023. The search was conducted on December 14, 2023, using the keyword 'Dewi Sri.' The results show that cultural and agricultural factors specific to the region influence the Javanese agroecological perspective. In contrast, Islamic agroecological methods are shaped by the integration of Islamic teachings, particularly the concept of Green Islam, to create food systems that are both sustainable and self-regulating. However, the specific mechanism by which Islam affected alterations in traditional agricultural knowledge systems cannot be well elucidated using broad terms. It is essential to acknowledge that understanding the role of Islam in influencing the transformation of traditional agriculture knowledge in the Islamic environmentalism movement can facilitate collaboration within the Muslim community. This fact can serve as a valuable resource for integrating Javanese values without posing a threat to the integrity of Islam but instead as an opportunity to demonstrate that Islam also shares the same commitment to environmental preservation.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the ontological status of God in Calon Arang Manuscripts and interpret it metaethically. Calon Arang, as an original Tantric literary work from the Nusantara's ancestors, is an interesting subject to examine in terms of its ontological view of God and the ethical implications that arise from it. Tantrism essentially conceptualizes God dualistically, depicting God in conflicting forms or elements, which are considered the cosmic basis of the world. This study highlights such dualistic tendencies and identifies potentially significant metaethical implications. An in-depth analysis is conducted utilizing a metaethical approach, specifically the school of natural determinism. This school believes that the moral laws that apply in human reality are in accordance with natural laws, so humans cannot determine objective morality with certainty. The ethical implications of God's ontological status in Tantric teachings are understood as a result of this natural determinism. This research places God's ontological status as the material object and uses natural determinism as the formal framework. Research methods include description, holistics, deduction-induction, and heuristics. With this approach, this research seeks to detail and unravel the complexity of the ontological view of God in the Calon Arang Manuscripts, while exploring the ethical implications that can bring a deeper understanding of this Tantric text.
