Abstract

In this modern age the world has undergone rapid development. technological progress is one of the most visible advances. The most widespread form in use by the world community is the internet. But technological progress can not be separated also from the problems brought about by these technological advances as well. Cyberbullying is a problem that comes along with the technological advances. The modern version of this breeding becomes a problem that plagues and even casualties. The purpose of this research is to know the relationship of watching intencity Kemal Palevi’s vlog and perception about Kemal Palevi’s vlog with Attitude to cyberbullying on Kemal Palevi. The population of this research is teen millenials from 17 - 34 years old by using purposive sampling technique. Based on the test performed using the Chi-Square formula, it shows the result that: first, the intensity of watching the vlog of Kemal Palevi with attitude of cyberbullying on Kemal Palevi with asymptotic significance value of 0.000, but there are 4 cells with expectation value below 5 (50% 20%) and the lowest expectation value is 2.52. thus the hypothesis can not be inferred. Secondly, there is a positive correlation between perception of Kemal Palevi vlog with cyberbullying attitude on Kemal Palevi with significance value 0, but there are 4 cells with expectation value below 5 (50%> 20%) and lowest expectation value 1.80. Thus the hypothesis can not be concluded. suggestions given that Kemal Palevi should create a text or subtitle in the vlog that contains a foreign language so that the audience can absorb the information and the message as a whole from the vlog he watched.

Abstract

YouTube viewers in Indonesia have produced more television viewers. Not surprisingly, manufacturers began to use YouTube as their product promotion field. One brand that uses the media is the Ramayana Department Store. Through the kasidah version of the ad, Ramayana tries to convey the superiority of their products on YouTube. The ad has been watched as many as 16,250,632 times and liked 109,000 people. Viewers these ads increased by 154% compared to previous year's ads on YouTube. In addition, per capita income in Indonesia also increased. Supposedly, with the higher ad exposure, and the higher income level, the higher the purchase intention of someone. However, in fact, Ramayana Department Store has not become the most popular brand on Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to determine the corelation between ad exposure of Ramayana kasidah version on YouTube, and income level with purchase intention on Ramayana Department Store. The theory used today is the Advertising Exposure Theory and social kategory. This research is a quantitative study with an explanatory type. Researchers use non-probability sampling technique with a sample of 60 people aged 19-34 years in the city of Semarang who have been exposed to the Kasidah version of the Ramayana ad on YouTube. Based on the hypothesis test performed using Kendall's Tau analysis, it shows that there is a positive relationship on the ad exposure variables with the purchase intention on Department Store's Ramayana with a significance 0,000 and corellation coefficient 0.689. The income level variable with the Ramayana Department Store is also positively associated with a significance 0.00 and a corellation coefficient 0.568. The conclusion of this study is there is positive relationship between Ramayana ad kasidah version on YouTube and income level with purchase intention on Ramayana Department Store. With these results, it is recommended for the Ramayana Department Store to advertise more often in other media as well with a shorter duration using endorsers that are better known to the public.

Abstract

Women's anger expressions are often debated and tend to be rejected as irrational. On the other hand, the expression of anger of women who are victims of bullying is highlighted as an interesting aspect of the Korean drama The Glory, which is expressed through acts of revenge against the perpetrators who bullied them.The Glory was liked and watched by many viewers and also received various comments regarding the expression of anger of women who were victims of bullying and acts of bullying on social media. This research aims to describe the audience's interpretation of women's anger in the Korean drama The Glory. This research uses active audience theory, audience reception theory, and the semiotic analysis method by John Fiske to see the dominant meaning or preferred reading as well as the reception analysis method by Stuart Hall to determine the informant's position of meaning. The results of this research show that the five male and female informants, with different backgrounds and experiences, show a tendency for informants to be in a negotiated position regarding the dominant meaning displayed in the text. Two informants who had been victims of bullying were in a dominant position in interpreting expressions of anger in the Korean drama The Glory. On the other hand, three informants, namely one informant who had contact with the victim of bullying, were in a negotiating position and two informants who were not or had never been victims of bullying were in a negotiating position. Thus, the findings of this study found that there was a disclosure of women's power regarding women's expressions of anger. This research also shows that there is a film strategy by showing women's expressions of anger as victims of bullying that can be accepted by the audience, namely by taking revenge in a strategic and tactical way based on the crimes committed by the perpetrators of the bullying.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the communication process between parents and children in making decisions regarding the choice of a study program in higher education. In the family context, educational decisions often involve complex discussions between parents and children, where topics like the child's interests, career aspirations, and future become key points of discussion. This study uses an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach to explore the subjective experiences of children and parents during this communication process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four parent-child pairs who are currently or have already gone through the process of selecting a study program in higher education. The research findings indicate that the communication style of parents, such as authoritative or democratic styles, has a significant impact on the final decision. Moreover, factors such as parental expectations, the child's interests, as well as social and cultural pressures also influence the dynamics of communication. Children involved in open communication with their parents are more likely to choose study programs that align with their own interests, while in cases of authoritarian communication, the decision is more often determined by the parents. These findings emphasize the importance of openness and support in the educational decision-making process within the family environment. This research also offers practical implications for families and educational institutions in improving more effective and supportive communication between parents and children.

Abstract

Head & Shoulders, as one of the well-known shampoo brands in Indonesia, become trending topics & viral among netizens but do not show an increase in product sales. Despite various communication strategies, including creating attractive advertisements and collaborating with two brand ambassadors, Joe Taslim and Fadil Jaidi. This research aims to determine the influence of brand ambassador attractiveness and the advertising message knowledge level of Head & Shoulders on the purchase interest in Head & Shoulders products. The theories used in this study are the Source Attractiveness Theory and Advertising Exposure Theory. The sample size in this study was 100 people aged 20-29 who had seen the Head & Shoulders ad titled “Joe Taslim X Fadil Jaidi – Who Is the Next Head & Shoulders BA?” and were domiciled in Semarang. The sampling technique used in this study was non-probability sampling with a purposive sampling method approach. The results showed that the influence of the brand ambassador attractiveness variable on the Head & Shoulders product purchase interest variable obtained a significance value of <0,001, where this number is smaller than 0,01, which means highly significant, indicating the influence of brand ambassador attractiveness on the purchase interest in Head & Shoulders products. Likewise, the variable of the advertising message knowledge level of Head & Shoulders on the variable of the purchase interest in Head & Shoulders products obtained a significance value of <0,001, where this number is smaller than 0,01, which means highly significant, indicating the influence of the advertising message knowledge level of Head & Shoulders on the purchase interest in Head & Shoulders products.

Abstract

DANA, a digital wallet, is currently in the spotlight due to numerous negative reports and comments from its users. In 2023, DANA experienced a decline in the percentage of digital wallet usage in Indonesia. Several online news portals have also reported on the issues faced by DANA. Besides the online news portals, DANA users have expressed their concerns and posted negative reviews on every post made by the Instagram account @dana.id. Instagram and online news portals serve as platforms that can quickly disseminate information and provide spaces for discussion. The aim of this research is to determine the impact of negative news exposure on the digital wallet DANA and the perception of negative comments on the Instagram account @dana.id on the interest in using the digital wallet DANA. The theory used in this research is the Theory of Planned Behavior. This study employs a non-probability sampling technique with a population of 100 respondents, both male and female, who are social media users aged 18-34 years and have been exposed to negative news and have seen or read negative comments on the Instagram account @dana.id. The results of the research show that there is an negative influence between exposure to DANA news on interest in using the DANA digital wallet with a significance value of 0.000. Furthermore, the influence of the perception of comments on the @dana.id Instagram account on interest in using the DANA digital wallet has a significance value of 0.000. Therefore, it shows that there is an negative influence between the perception variable of comments on the @Dana.Id Instagram account on interest in using the DANA digital wallet

Abstract

The differences in distance and limitations in physical interaction experienced by couples in long-distance relationships (LDR) encourage individuals to adjust their communication patterns, emotions, and relationship maintenance strategies to achieve the desired level of closeness. Changes in the dynamics of long-distance relationships can affect the intensity of interaction and emotional closeness, which may lead to miscommunication and conflict. This research aims to understand the relationship maintenance strategies implemented by individuals in long-distance relationships, including the maintenance of the relationship, changes in communication patterns, conflicts or tensions that arise, and the resolution strategies applied. The theories used in this study are the Triangular Theory of Love, Relationship Maintenance Theory, and Relational Dialectics Theory. This research employs an interpretive paradigm with a phenomenological approach, using in-depth interviews as the data collection technique conducted with five individuals. The results of this research show that communication adjustments in relationship maintenance are carried out by individuals from the moment they begin a long-distance relationship with their partner. Each individual accommodates their partner's communication needs by utilizing various communication technologies, such as text messages, phone calls, and video calls in their daily interactions. Despite facing challenges related to physical distance and limited face-to-face interaction, individuals strive to maintain their relationship through intensive communication and efforts to sustain emotional intimacy. Each couple in an LDR applies relationship maintenance behaviors to achieve the desired ideal state, prevent conflicts, and maintain commitment within the relationship. Physical distance is not the main cause of conflict but often leads to minor miscommunications and tensions that need to be managed. Conflict resolution in LDRs is carried out through various strategies, such as compromise, increasing communication frequency, and maintaining emotional intimacy through virtual interactions.

Abstract

Gender inequality between men and women still occurs frequently across various aspects such as social, political, economic, cultural, and industrial spheres, particularly in terms of accessibility. Discrimination against women remains widespread and pervasive in many areas of their lives. The Gadis Kretek series, which premiered on Netflix in November 2023, highlights the importance of understanding gender inequality. Gadis Kretek delivers a social critique on the patriarchal culture and discrimination against women in Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive methods to analyze and deeply identify the interpretation of gender inequality as experienced by women in the series Gadis Kretek, using hermeneutic analysis. The study draws upon organizational communication theory, standpoint theory, and liberal feminism. Data collection techniques include document observation. The findings reveal discrimination in various aspects of women's lives in the 1960s, particularly in the kretek industry. The main character, Dasiyah, faces obstacles when attempting to continue her family’s business but is not given the same opportunities as men. This inequality is evident in entrenched gender stereotypes and limited access to opportunities and resources for women. A grammatical hermeneutic approach uncovers the historical and narrative context, highlighting workplace gender discrimination, where women like Dasiyah must fight against patriarchal culture to pursue their rights and aspirations. Organizational communication theory and standpoint feminism explain how power structures and gender hierarchies influence social and professional interactions in the series' narrative. Ultimately, Gadis Kretek reflects women's ongoing struggle against gender inequality, a theme that persists into the modern era

Abstract

The construction of women in society with the existence of feminine and masculine characters in the midst of a patriarchal culture then seems to provide restrictions and place women in a subordinate position. Women are labeled with feminine traits as weak people under men who are considered superior with the label of masculine traits. This phenomenon then becomes the background of this research, based on the theoretical stand point in the critical paradigm by using the method of analyzing the five codes of Roland Barthes’ semiotic lexia reading. The results of this study indicate that the female characters in Stealing Raden Saleh are portrayed masculine by having dominant, confident, strong, and assertive traits. These traits are the traits of masculine characters. This depiction defies the myth that develops in society if women are figures who are required to have feminine traits and become weak people under the masculine domination of men. When women are constructed in a masculine way and have traits of masculine characters, they can be called masculine women and androgynous individuals. An androgynous individual is an individual who has both masculine and feminine traits at the same time.

Abstract

News is a communication medium that is interesting to study. Through news, the chronology of climbing accidents in Indonesian mountains is described to the public and becomes an interesting topic for research. This study aims to describe and understand the perspectives of mountain climbers on 3 climbing accident news in online media. The three news articles contain detailed chronologies of climbing accidents, two of which resulted in fatalities. This research uses Stuart Hall's reception analysis method to determine the audience's positions of meaning. The study was conducted with 4 informants: 2 novice climbers and 2 experienced climbers. The results show that all four informants agree with the 7 preferred readings that emerge from the three climbing accident news articles. Most informants accept the dominant meanings of the three climbing accident news articles, but in some specific aspects, there are negotiated readings from the informants
