Abstract

“Galak sireutôh, yö siribé” is a popular saying in Aceh, referred to the person who is anxious to do what he wants to. This study investigated the student teachers’ anxiety felt when using English orally during their learning. Using the adapted questionnaires from Young’s (1990), that has been adapted by Occhipinti (2009), it involved 46 students undertaking English Speaking in a higher education in Lhokseumawe, Aceh. The results show that the majority of the students like English very much; however, they spent little time for using it orally, ranging from 1 to 8 hours per week. Most of them also affirmed that their English speaking ability is bad. It was also found that most of the students were highly anxious when speaking English with high self-exposure, but less anxious when engaging in collaborative activities and when given enough time to prepare what they talk. Yet, several students seem to have trait anxiety as they are highly anxious in most learning activities. Most were highly anxious for speaking English individually. This is likely influenced by their contextual, social and cultural factors, such as people in Aceh are known as communal rather than individualistic society.

Abstract

Kata kunci: pengabdian masyarakat, parental control, konten internetAbstract The high penetration of smartphones in Indonesia, which has reached 194.26 million users or around 89% of the total population, has had a direct impact on increasing access to the internet, including by children. Unfortunately, this high access has not been balanced by age limit regulations or parental awareness of the negative impacts of inappropriate digital content, such as violence, pornography, and hate speech. To overcome this problem, the community service team conducted outreach activities for parents at the Labuy Village Integrated Health Post, Aceh Besar Regency, regarding the negative impacts of the internet as well as training in the use of parental control applications to filter content and limit children's access to the internet. This activity aims to increase the role of parents in supervising their children's use of gadgets, as well as creating a safer and more child-friendly digital environment. Keywords: community service, parental control, internet content

Abstract

This systematic literature review explores studies on teacher language awareness (TLA) within the Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. TLA is defined as the knowledge and metacognitive awareness that language teachers have of language, language use, and language teaching and learning. The reviewed literature consists of peer-reviewed articles and conference proceedings that were extracted from databases such as Google Scholar, JSTOR, ERIC, and SAGE Journals. The review synthesises empirical research on TLA, and closely related constructs such as language awareness, teacher awareness, multilingual beliefs in Indonesia, identifies gaps, and provides recommendations for teacher education and further research. Key findings reveal the key dimensions of TLA research In Indonesian EFL context, several mediating factors of TLA development, and several gaps in the literature as well as future directions of TLA research in Indonesia. These findings suggest that teacher language awareness notion is increasingly recognised and Indonesian EFL teachers exhibit growing awareness of their language practices. Implications for in-service professional development, pre-service teacher training, and policy are discussed. These recommendations are aimed at fostering more profound language awareness in Indonesian EFL teaching

Abstract

This study explores the emotional experiences of pre-service teachers (PSTs) during their teaching practicum and examines how these emotions shape their emerging teacher identities. This narrative study explores the personal stories of five PSTs, each reflecting unique challenges and emotional responses. The data were gathered through in-depth interviews with each participant, analysed using narrative analysis, and presented as reconstructed stories. The findings reveal that PSTs frequently experience negative emotions such as frustration, anxiety, anger, and a sense of being unappreciated. These emotions arise from student behaviour and the challenges associated with classroom management. Positive emotions such as satisfaction and pride also emerge. However, the struggles with self-doubt and feelings of being undervalued were more prevalent. These narratives highlight the crucial role of understanding PSTs’ emotions as they navigate into the complexities of teaching practicum. The findings of the study underscore the need for emotional support, collaboration, and guidance to foster resilience and confidence among PSTs, ultimately shaping their sense of teacher identity in positive ways.
