Abstract

The implementation of Sharia law in Aceh in 2001 has ignited various reactions from both national and international communities. Some argued that this Sharia law could have a detrimental effect on human rights issues. Others claimed that as a province populated by the Muslim majority, Aceh should be given an opportunity to legalise its own legal product, ensuring that Sharia law is part of Acehnese religious values. This paper is primarily concerned with analysing the texts taken from The Jakarta Post newspaper’s article regarding the formal implementation of the local Sharia law in Aceh. The article is examined by means of various tools in Discourse Analysis method, including social identity, speech acts and implicature, genres and register. The findings elucidate that the speech and discourse of the participants and their interpretation are highly influenced by identity and community ideology of the speakers.

Abstract

The study of this article was set out to identify the use of the language of propaganda in Bush’s political speech. It was purposed to clarify the propaganda techniques applied by Bush in order to have one point of view among the audiences. The study focused on how the techniques of propaganda occurred within Bush Jr.’s speech in which he attempted to explain the different sides of who is combating terrorism and who is performing terror. The material of analysis was the speech delivered by Bush Jr. in front of the Military Officers Association of America Meeting in 2006. This article then found that the propagandist tries to control the relationship between information and audiences’ mind through the usage of language in their political speech. It was argued that propaganda can also effectively work toward almost all types of audiences, whereas the strategy of propaganda was mostly creating a fallacious reasoning connection concerning the topics being discussed.

Abstract

Recently, the importance of task-based language teaching (TBLT) is presumably clear and therefore has also widely being used in many countries. The process of recognizing a ‘task’ itself could be one of the fields where it tends to be slightly fuzzy, especially for a new, learner and inexperience teacher. Many English experts and task-based supporters have published various books to assist their ideas. Perhaps that is why; we now have had different criterion of assessing a ‘task’. This paper thus, intends to establish the extent to which a modern course book has encompassed principles and practice of TBLT when compared with older books. I have therefore taken two books as the source of data for this paper; Natural English-Upper Intermediate Student’s Book and Workout Upper Intermediate Student’s Book, both aimed at the same language level of learner. Both are intended to upper intermediate student.

Abstract

The existence of Ruangguru as one of the online learning platforms in Indonesia has helped students to learn at home individually. Ruangguru smartphone application allows virtual learning to become more organized in adjusting the curriculum. Ruangguru provides exclusive features to facilitate online learning, which makes this application widely used by students. However, many believe that Ruangguru still cannot replace face-to-face learning activities. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the strengths and weaknesses of this platform based on the students’ experience. The participants were five senior high school students batch 2021 from two courses in Banda Aceh who have experienced learning conventional/offline courses and online learning by Ruangguru. This research uses a qualitative approach with interview and observation as the data collection techniques. Based on the research findings, Ruangguru allows learning in an environment without time and place restriction. It is proven capable enough of changing the barriers caused by poverty, location, and other factors. However, Ruangguru could not replace conventional learning, especially in the context of social interaction. The main reason is that Ruangguru only focuses on the students’ learning achievements. However, some other significant aspects are overlooked such as low feedback, lack of peer interaction, and unscheduled learning. Keywords: Ruangguru Application; Online Learning Platform; Conventional Learning
