Abstract

This research aims to explore the assessment of fiqh siyāsah regarding the role of women’s leadership in Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in South Sulawesi and how the patriarchal cultural structure and the existence of bissu influence this dynamic. The study is empirical, employing the approach and theory of fiqh siyāsah. Primary data were collected through interviews with several prominent figures, while secondary data were obtained from literature studies. Data collection involved techniques such as interviews, participatory observation, and documentation within the pesantren. The findings indicate that although women are beginning to play leadership roles within a limited context, the influence of patriarchal culture still dominates the highest policy-making processes in the pesantren. Conversely, the presence of bissu as a ceremonial figure recognized by the community significantly contributes to the acceptance of women in the realm of religious education. The originality of this research lies in its comprehensive analysis of the interaction between local culture and women’s leadership, as well as the role of bissu in opening opportunities for women. The implications of these findings underscore the importance of applying the principles of fiqh siyāsah that emphasize justice and equality, and how this can support women's roles in creating a more just and inclusive society. This study provides a new perspective that enriches the discussion surrounding women's leadership amidst the patriarchal culture of South Sulawesi.

Abstract

This study examines the authority of women in maritime culture through a historical analysis that underscores cultural dimensions as manifestations of gender. The historical pursuit of trepang (sea cucumbers) by seekers from the port of Makassar to Australia’s northern coast has continued from the 16th century to the early 20th century, commonly referred to as the trepang route. This study addresses women’s cultural capital, emphasising power dynamics that have been underrepresented in maritime cultural studies, particularly as shipping and commercial activities have predominantly been associated with male authority. This research employs Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital to illustrate the expertise of Mandar women in weaving Karoroq (sail) for Padewakkang boats utilised in the trepang trade. The Karoroq sail plays a vital role in the Padewakkang voyage to Arnhem Land, Australia, where trepang were harvested. The Padewakkang vessel, which lacks an engine, is entirely propelled by its sails. This study not only highlights the technical involvement of women in preserving maritime cultural heritage but also explores how Mandar women have historically demonstrated their power through traditional knowledge and the reinforcement of cultural identity. Furthermore, this study illustrates the status of women as equals to men within the maritime culture of Sulawesi for several decades. The authors perceive women's efforts to leverage cultural capital in the trepang route as a silent negotiation.

Abstract

This paper aims to explore how the media framing the candidacy of Gibran as vice president for Prabowo. The author uses the framing media proposed by Gioia which introduces three stages of inductive framing, namely theme determination, first-stage categorization, and second-stage categorization. Framing analysis, as developed by Gioia (1983), is a qualitative research method used in which an individual or group constructs meaning about a particular problem or phenomenon based on their individual experience. Framing analysis provides insight into how the media directs or influences the opinions of its audience through the selective presentation of information and interpretation of events. The result showed that online media framing can shape public opinion, which has contributed to the highest achievement for Prabowo-Gibran, despite all the controversies. This study contextualizes its results on political communication and framing analysis. Further research on another kind of framing is still needed in this subject

A total of 100 articles from 68 sources with contributions from  248 authors were analyzed using Vosviewer and RStudio to identify prominent themes, collaborative networks, and emerging research trends. Indonesia emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for 98 publications, 68 citations, and10 collaborative works, followed by Malaysia and Singapore. Key themes included political media, electoral institutions, election violations, artificial intelligence, and gender politics. Notable emerging topics were the impact of social media on voter behavior, youth engagement, and electoral governance. The findings indicate that while Indonesia dominates electoral research in Southeast Asia, further studies could explore electoral reforms, digital political campaigns, and voter education. These insights provide valuable implications for policymakers in improving electoral governance. This bibliometric review provides a comprehensive overview of electoral studies in Southeast Asia, highlighting key research trends and identifying future research directions to strengthen democratic governance in the region.

Abstract

Within the domain of public administration, several paradigms have emerged and developed such as new public administration, new public management and new public service. The word ‘new’ is labeled to complement service standard of public administration which previously focused on efficient, economical and coordinated management, as well as social equity. New public administration emphasizes on the values of efficiency, productivity and business into public sectors to enhance the existing circumstances of public bureaucracy which tended to be huge and over in number, inefficient and lack in public service performance and less attentive to the development and enhancement of public service. New public service refreshes the role of the government, which in new public management perspective plays as facilitator, to be more on public services. Mechanism to achieve the intended objectives is to establish coalition and partnership among the government, private sectors and civil society, to suit the agreed necessities. The development of these paradigms indicates that this discipline intensively and extensively undergoes self-enrichment in its research materials.
