Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to present a different perspective on presenting patriarchal bargains from the existing ones. The patriarchal system is generally understood as a system that places men as superior to women. In the western view, the patriarchal system has become a 'way of life which is considered ahistorical, eternal and the subordination of women is a universal act, so this hierarchy has always existed and will continue, and like other natural rules, this rule is also unchangeable and unnecessary. questioned again. Radical feminists embrace and apply classical patriarchal theory to explain almost all forms of male domination over the exploitation of women. However, women's responses to male domination vary widely, according to the objective opportunities available under each patriarchal variant, thus through patriarchal bargaining, Kandiyoti opens up opportunities for women to see patriarchy as an entity that is not eternal. Patriarchal bargain studies have also emerged with the dominance of a strong agency character. The agency character is indeed considered to have the power to target other forces outside the structure, but this becomes problematic because patriarchal bargain studies seem to ignore the existence of (partial) structure. While according to Giddens, agency plays in the realm of structure, just as the structure is an unavoidable epistemic aspect in social science, the structure is not conceptualized as only placing constraints on human agency, but is also seen as possible. Social change cannot be seen partially, both structure and agency are present simultaneously and interactively.

Abstract

This study examines the authority of women in maritime culture through a historical analysis that underscores cultural dimensions as manifestations of gender. The historical pursuit of trepang (sea cucumbers) by seekers from the port of Makassar to Australia’s northern coast has continued from the 16th century to the early 20th century, commonly referred to as the trepang route. This study addresses women’s cultural capital, emphasising power dynamics that have been underrepresented in maritime cultural studies, particularly as shipping and commercial activities have predominantly been associated with male authority. This research employs Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital to illustrate the expertise of Mandar women in weaving Karoroq (sail) for Padewakkang boats utilised in the trepang trade. The Karoroq sail plays a vital role in the Padewakkang voyage to Arnhem Land, Australia, where trepang were harvested. The Padewakkang vessel, which lacks an engine, is entirely propelled by its sails. This study not only highlights the technical involvement of women in preserving maritime cultural heritage but also explores how Mandar women have historically demonstrated their power through traditional knowledge and the reinforcement of cultural identity. Furthermore, this study illustrates the status of women as equals to men within the maritime culture of Sulawesi for several decades. The authors perceive women's efforts to leverage cultural capital in the trepang route as a silent negotiation.

Abstract

This writing describes a great rivalry between environmental and economical interests. When experts on environment are worried that free trade may create harm on natural resources as it has been allegedly blamed to bring about environmental disaster, the supporters of free trade are concerned that policies on environment may lead to huge breakdown in trading activities. Taken that to match the two might be difficult, if not impossible, this writing is trying to harmonize them. Through communicative action, the writer applies possibly compromised gaps, in order that our merely one world will continuously provide the needs of human beings for nowadays and for the future.

Abstract

This paper describes the existence of state in both concept and political reality in Islam. Discourse on state has been within the study of Islam since classical era. Muslim jurists, normatively position state as dharuriyat (things of importance), while some Muslim thinkers present their ideas on state and the ideal forms and systems of governance, even though there is no such firm and detailed regulations in the Quran and hadith on these issues. Historically, discourse on state may distinguish Islam from other world religions. Islam, since its initial establishment, has been involved with the issue of state and governance, even with political issues at large. Historical facts showed de facto fragmentation within the empire of Islam since 850. The characters of Muslim rulers had nothing to do with the ideal existence of Islamic state. Divisions, conflicts, and even bloodshed had been part of empirical Muslims at that time. It shows that there has been yet no synergy in matching normative Islamic state and historical Islam.

Abstract

This article reflects the role of fishermen as subaltern group in the politic of sea side reclamation development in Makassar city. Subaltern may be defined as suppressed, inferior and powerless subject in representing the subjects themselves. The dynamic of development in urban areas is strictly attached to the management of the leading regime which produces urban political planning. The development vision of Makassar city to combine the concept of world city and local wisdom is more less a series of sustainable development of old city developed in the perspective of developmental colonialism and recently restructured in that of economic imperialism. When development is correlated with surplus achievement, the result may be twofold. In one hand, it will create new wealthy parties, while at the same time, communal poverty and misery is frequently an immediate consequence of the development itself. Indeed, development is not merely provided by nature. It is an unavoidable consequence of political process and negotiation by political actors, which may involve intrigues, fight for interest, and chase of power with political implications.

Abstract

The presence of women in the political sphere is often celebrated as an achievement in the agenda of gender equality and democratization. However, such representation does not always reflect true political independence. In many cases at the local level, women’s involvement forms part of a dynastic political strategy that relies on kinship ties to maintain power. This research examines how women are used as proxies of power within the context of dynastic politics rooted in patriarchal structures. Using a qualitative approach and a case study design, this research explores the symbolic representation practices of a female political actor in a region in South Sulawesi. She advanced in the political contest with strong support from a family power network that has long dominated the local political landscape. Through a theoretical framework on dynastic politics and power proxies, this study reveals that women’s involvement does not always strengthen empowerment agendas but can instead serve as an instrument for perpetuating family power dominance. These findings highlight the ambiguity between representation and empowerment, as well as the importance of distinguishing women’s symbolic presence from participation based on individual autonomy and capacity. This study contributes to a critical understanding of the relationship between gender, power, and the persistence of dynastic politics in local electoral democracy.
