Abstract

As sea cucumber, Holothuria scabra is one of the fishery commodities which have high economic value, this species now is under overexploited. Sea cucumber aquaculture should be developed urgently. This research was conducted to evaluate the effects of stocking densities on the growth and survival rates of sea cucumber. This research was carried out  by using pen culture with 5 – 9 cm in length or 30 – 50 g of seedlings. The sea cucumber was reared with stocking densities of 15 (treatment A), 20 (treatment B) and 25 individual/m2 (treatment C) in triplicates. The observation of growth and survival rates were done every two week. The water quality was measured every three day. The result indicated that the growth and survival rates was higher in treatment A than treatments B and C.

Abstract

Good economic prospects of H. scabra cause H. scabra to be captured for sale without regard to the sustainability of H. scabra. Initially the partners only captured H. scabra and sold it to collectors. The presence of H. scabra which is starting to be difficult to obtain encourages partners to start an enlargement effort. The existing condition of the enlargement business carried out by the partners is still conventional, the absence of a good application of science and technology causes the results obtained by partners have not been maximized. The main purpose of this activity is to empower partners in the enlargement of H. scabra with the application of good science and technology in feeding. The method of implementing community service (partners) to solve the problems experienced by partners in the enlargement of H. scabra is by training. The main work of this science and technology implementation activity is the training of partners in preparing and feeding H. scabra enlargement. The advantage of training feeding strategies is that partners can increase H. scabra production. Partners are able to know the growth of H. scabra and know the harvest time of H. scabra. Training and mentoring during the implementation of this program received good appreciation from partners, partners have better knowledge and skills in enlargement of H.scabra especially in H. scabra feeding and are skilled in measuring growth.

Abstract

Caulerpa racemosa is a type of green macroalgae with high economic value that has the potential to be cultivated intensively. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of planting depth on the vegetative growth of Caulerpa racemosa cultivated in a tarpaulin tank system. Three planting depths were tested: 20 cm, 40 cm, and 60 cm. Vegetative growth parameters observed included Absolute Growth in Weight, Absolute Growth in Stolon Length, and Absolute Growth in Ramuli Length over a defined cultivation period. The results indicated that the 60 cm planting depth yielded the highest vegetative growth, with mean weight reaching 137.67±3.21 g, stolon length 30.04±0.54 cm, and ramuli length 25.29±2.90 cm. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference only in stolon length between the 60 cm and 40 cm treatments, while differences in weight and ramuli length were not statistically significant. Overall, the data suggest that a 60 cm planting depth provides a more stable microenvironment in terms of light intensity, water temperature, and protection from physical disturbances, thereby enhancing biomass accumulation and vegetative structure development in Caulerpa racemosa. Therefore, a planting depth of 60 cm is recommended as the optimal depth for cultivating Caulerpa racemosa in tarpaulin-based culture systems.
