Abstract

Early childhood is an important milestone in children’s life. The practices of online learning are challenging for families with early childhood children. The study examined the implementation of early childhood education during the pandemic of COVID-19. A narrative literature review of some studies published from the inception of the pandemic COVID-19 to October 31, 2020. The search strategy comprised an electronic search of different online database in PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus and manual search on Google Scholar by an exploration of a web-based search engine and hand searching. The keywords used in this study were “early childhood”, “education”, online learning”, “pandemic”, COVID-19. Early childhood education has been influenced due to school closure. Most of the children experience online learning, to reduce the spread of the outbreak, especially when face-to-face learning cannot be conducted. Parents and teachers have significant roles in supporting the children to improve their cognitive and social development. However, the implementation of home learning causes some difficulties in relation with self-regulation of very young children, the readiness to utilize of digital technology and learning materials, parent’s beliefs and attitude on online learning compared with traditional learning, and requirements of demanding time and knowledge to accompany the children. Therefore, it is important to have good communication between parents and teachers to support early childhood online learning during the outbreak. Keywords: COVID-19, Early childhood, Education, Online learning, Pandemic.

Abstract

This paper evaluates whether mass media exposures, specifically television, radio, newspaper/magazine and internet, were effective tools for utilizing contraception among Indonesian couples. A sample of 8,925 Indonesian couples were selected based on the result of the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. Logistic regression models were used to predict recent media exposure (television, radio, newspaper/magazine and internet) to family planning messages and its association with contraceptive use among Indonesian couples. Internet exposure was found to be significant, and it had a strong effect on the likelihood that the Indonesian couples uses modern contraceptives. Region and number of living children were also found as significant effects on the modern contraceptive use. As such, internet as a promotion tool in campaigning family planning is more effective than television, radio, and newspaper/magazine) in improving contraceptive use among Indonesian couples.

Abstract

Background: Unintended pregnancy is a global health problem. The number of unintended pregnancies globally is still high, accounting for 1 in 4 pregnancies. In Indonesia, it occupies 15% of total pregnancies. However, studies discussing the determinants of unintended pregnancies in Indonesia were conducted on a small scale. Methods: This cross-sectional research utilized the data of 15,316 respondents of the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. Results: The prevalence of unintended pregnancies in women with live births in the last 3–5 years was approximately 16%. The highest risk of unintended pregnancies was recorded for those with the youngest age, living in urban, and were grand multipara and for the couples who did not know each other’s preferences. Conclusions: Strengthening communication, information, and education in family planning programs, particularly for young women and grand multipara and promoting men’s involvement can help prevent unintended pregnancies.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Breastfeeding initiation is internationally recommended due to its benefits on maternal and child health. The study aims to determine the relationship between mode of delivery and early breastfeeding initiation among women who delivered in health facilities. Methods: The study was based on The Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey 2017. There were 5,369 women whose children were born in the last 24 months preceding the survey in health facilities in Indonesia. Descriptive statistics and binary logistic regression were used for data analysis. The complex sample design was performed for analyses. Results: Of the women who had given birth to at least 24 months preceding the survey in health facilities, 57 percent of women were found to practice breastfeeding initiation. The likelihood of breastfeeding initiation among women who delivered in health facilities was associated with mode of delivery, which women with cesarean delivery (OR=0.33; 95%CI: 0.29-0.38) were less likely to practice breastfeeding initiation compared with those with normal vaginal delivery after adjusted by socio-economic factors. Moreover, women aged 35-49 years and non-working women were found to have higher probabilities to practice breastfeeding initiation. Conclusion: Maternal age, working status, and type of delivery were significantly influencing the practice of early initiation of breastfeeding among women who delivered in health facilities. Policy and intervention to encourage and support early initiation of breastfeeding should be taken into consideration by public health professionals and health providers. Comprehensive breastfeeding counseling should be a part of health care training to encourage moms to start nursing as soon as possible, especially for mothers who have caesarean deliveries. It is important to ensure the implementation of breastfeeding policy on the company’s worksite support policy.

Abstract

At the beginning of the pandemic, the policy focused on COVID-19 prevention and control. Health facilities faced disruption temporarily regarding contraceptive services. This study analysed the impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak on Family Planning services in Indonesia. Monthly routine statistics from the National Population and Family Planning Board contraceptive service were examined to determine the trends in contraceptive services in Indonesia before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic from January to December 2020. The study was secondary data analysis by utilizing monthly report data from all provinces in Indonesia. Comparison data would account for the monthly trends before and during the pandemic. There was a decrease in contraceptive services between March and April 2020. However, the trend started to increase in June when a one million acceptors campaign was conducted to provide free family planning services in 34 provinces. Injectable (54%) and pills (39%) remain the most favorable contraceptives during the pandemic. IUDs and implants peaked in June 2020 (288,503 users) and September 2020 (214,061 users). The massive campaign of contraceptive services has had a positive impact in increasing the contraceptive users. Contraceptive services are conducted following strict health protocols. Continuation of contraceptive use among reproductive couples still needs to be increased.

Abstract

Early neonatal deaths, defined as deaths of newborn babies between zero and seven days, have undoubtedly triggered a big challenge in developing countries. This current analysis aimed to determine the effect of birth interval (i.e., the time between two successive live births) on adverse pregnancy outcomes such as early neonatal death by using reproductive calendar data containing information on birth history for five years preceding Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey 2017. Merely singleton and non-first live births were included in the analysis (n=11, 599). Logistic regression models for the complex sample were utilized to measure the associations between birth interval and early neonatal deaths after adjusting for potential confounders. Early neonatal mortality was associated with birth interval. Newborns with shorter birth intervals (< 24 months) and longer birth intervals (36 months or more) had 2.68 times (95% CI: 1.15-6.28) and 3.08 times (95% CI: 1.37-6.92), respectively, higher odds of early neonatal deaths compared with newborns birth spaced of 24-35 months. Among mothers who received at least one antenatal care visit, there was a decrease in the odds of early neonatal deaths for shorter and longer birth intervals. The results suggest that the promotion of optimal birth interval, the utilization of antenatal care services, and the improvement of contraceptive services are all important to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes.
