Abstract

Covid-19’s pandemic impacts on the Indonesians food system pose risks to human health. Little attention has been paid to food insecurity of 250 million Indonesians, resulting in a public health concern. The aim of the study is to conduct a scoping review on food security in Indonesia. Google Scholar and the Pubmed Research Documents were used to search for relevant primary research using the following terms: “food security”, “access”, “availability”, “utilisation”, “Indonesia”, and “Covid-19”. A totalled seven articles from Google Scholar and the Pubmed Research Documents were finally selected. The articles revealed three types of research approaches, those that nutritious food intake of Indonesians (n=1), those that quantified food security (n=2), and articles that addressed at least one pillar of food security during covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia (n=4). Research investigating dietary intake of carbohydrate foods is more prevalent among Indonesians, though many differences exist among participant age groups and geographical areas. Future research should include direct measurements of food intake and food security to provide a more complete picture of food security in Indonesia. Keywords: food insecurity, food availability, Indonesia.

Abstract

The elderly and their caregivers are at higher risk from Coronavirus Disease-2019, particularly for elderly with chronic health conditions. To prevent the transmission of the virus, those elderly issued strict physical distance, restricting most interactions between the elderly and their caregivers. On the other side, caregivers can serve as crucial and trusted partners in the elderly’s care to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Hence, this study aims to analyze the knowledge, attitudes, practices (KAP), and the role of caregivers in providing services to the elderly during the outbreaks. A descriptive quantitative study was conducted from May to June 2020. The survey was utilizing Google Forms in four cities in Indonesia. A total of 317 out of 400 participants had completed the survey. The knowledge of the COVID-19 score was 79.50%, attitude 92.11%, and practice 90.54%. The caregivers’ role in protecting the elderly from COVID’s infection was about 98.42%. They could continue their routine activities during physical distancing 84.54%, treated elderly by not going to the hospital (60.04%), not visited any crowded place, wore masks and washed their hand after activity (87.38%). They agreed that government would finally successfully control COVID-19 (90.22%). This study concluded that the knowledge, attitude, practice and role of caregivers on COVID-19 effectively prevents the caregivers neglecting the elderly during the COVID-19 outbreak. Future information on elderly care need to consider not just the risks of the virus, but also the healthy lifestyle.

Abstract

This paper evaluates whether mass media exposures, specifically television, radio, newspaper/magazine and internet, were effective tools for utilizing contraception among Indonesian couples. A sample of 8,925 Indonesian couples were selected based on the result of the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey. Logistic regression models were used to predict recent media exposure (television, radio, newspaper/magazine and internet) to family planning messages and its association with contraceptive use among Indonesian couples. Internet exposure was found to be significant, and it had a strong effect on the likelihood that the Indonesian couples uses modern contraceptives. Region and number of living children were also found as significant effects on the modern contraceptive use. As such, internet as a promotion tool in campaigning family planning is more effective than television, radio, and newspaper/magazine) in improving contraceptive use among Indonesian couples.

Abstract

Early neonatal deaths, defined as deaths of newborn babies between zero and seven days, have undoubtedly triggered a big challenge in developing countries. This current analysis aimed to determine the effect of birth interval (i.e., the time between two successive live births) on adverse pregnancy outcomes such as early neonatal death by using reproductive calendar data containing information on birth history for five years preceding Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey 2017. Merely singleton and non-first live births were included in the analysis (n=11, 599). Logistic regression models for the complex sample were utilized to measure the associations between birth interval and early neonatal deaths after adjusting for potential confounders. Early neonatal mortality was associated with birth interval. Newborns with shorter birth intervals (< 24 months) and longer birth intervals (36 months or more) had 2.68 times (95% CI: 1.15-6.28) and 3.08 times (95% CI: 1.37-6.92), respectively, higher odds of early neonatal deaths compared with newborns birth spaced of 24-35 months. Among mothers who received at least one antenatal care visit, there was a decrease in the odds of early neonatal deaths for shorter and longer birth intervals. The results suggest that the promotion of optimal birth interval, the utilization of antenatal care services, and the improvement of contraceptive services are all important to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

People of all ages are using mobile devices more frequently, and more children are reportedly using digital media as well, which raises the risk of Digital Eye Strain (DES). There have been few studies on how often DES affects children particularly post-pandemic. The purpose of this study is to review published literature concerning DES, including its pathogenesis and therapy options. A literature search was performed based on PubMed, EMBASE and Scopus databases published from 2003 to 2023 using the broad search term “digital eye strain”, “ocular asthenopia secondary to digital gadgets”, “computer vision syndrome”, “eye strain post-computer or mobile use”, “visual weariness”, and “children" in all fields. Of the 163 articles retrieved, 107 were retained for inclusion in this review. The result reveals that there is an urgent need to inform parents, caregivers, and youth about setting screen time limits and applying ergonomic practices due to the recent surge in digital electronic gadget usage among kids and young adults.

Abstract

Frequent inter-spousal communication is regarded as an indicator of safe family planning practice. Nevertheless, communication about family planning within couples in Indonesia is still largely unexplored. This study assessed the levels of inter-spousal communication about family planning and its associated determinants, using cross-sectional and nationally representative data from the 2017 Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey (IDHS), from a randomly selected cohort of 8,925 currently-married couples. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, inter-spousal communication behaviors, and attitudes regarding family planning were collected. The dependent variable in this study is how frequently couples discuss family planning, based on wives’ responses. The analyses were stratified based on the frequency of inter-spousal communication: never, once or twice, or more often. The results of the study were greater husband approval of family planning and communication with family planning field workers, and that those encouraged inter-spousal communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

Adolescent fertility is an essential issue because it is associated with the level of morbidity and mortality of mothers and children. Kalimantan provinces own fertility problems. Teenagers are still complex, including Age Specific Fertility Rate 15-19 years is still significant. It is recorded that 4.6% of children aged 10-17 years in Kalimantan have got married. The objective of this study is to identify the predictive model of factors correlated with provincial youth fertility in Kalimantan. The analysis was conducted by employing descriptive and inferential methods and binary logistic regression. The results of the study were among 433 adolescents in Kalimantan, 11% were married, 9.9% had given birth or were pregnant with their first child, 14.1% experienced sexual relations and 3.1% encountered sex at <15 years of age. The data employed was the 2017 Indonesian Health Demographic Survey with a unit of analysis for adolescents aged 15-19 years in 5 provinces in Kalimantan totaling 433 respondents. The sampling technique employed total sampling. Statistically, it is discovered a significant relationship between age, marital status, adolescent sexual behavior, contraceptive use status, education level, economic status, and access to the internet with youth fertility in Kalimantan. The results of logistic regression analysis displayed that the variable of family planning use possess the most effect on adolescent fertility simultaneously with the strength of the relationship OR (Expβ) = 0.2.  Suggestions for further research to further scrutinize relevant programs such as maturing age at marriage and parenting skill to suppress adolescent fertility.
