Abstract

The advancement of Smartphone application has brought significant changes to people’s life.  The Smartphone is not only used as a communication tool but also lead people to do certain activities in multiple ways. Those ways include accessing information, looking for entertainment, making photos and videos, playing games, and using specific application features. For medical students, especially nursing students, using a medical application in the Smartphone can be one of the potential ways in learning English easily. It provides them an opportunity to get some types of learning activities meaningfully.  They can use of image and animation on the apps to learn basic medical English, create, share and reflect English medical materials through audio or text, and gain the information about healthcare domain. Thus, this paper gives a brief discussion of using Smartphone application in English language teaching by highlighting few samples of application and activities for nursing students. Key words: Smartphone application, nursing students, medical English

Abstract

Teaching practice is one of compulsory subject to be taken by English Department students of Universitas Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin Solok. This subject provides an opportunity for the students to apply their skill and knowtledge that they gained during their study in the real classroom environment. During this teaching practice, the students will be exposed to the real environment ofteaching process and its challenge in the field of education. As a beginner, doing teaching practice is not as easy as to be done by the students. A lot of challenges and complexities are found by the students during teaching practice. Those involve preparing lesson plan, developing good ilassroom management, preparing materials'and media, and participating in non-teaching activity. Lesson study is a good way to help students in doing teaching practice. Basically, it is a method of professional development carried out by teacheis in their own schools, with their own students and colleagues, in their own classroom to improve quality of teaching and learning. The teachers work collaboratively to plan. teach. observe and analyze lessons. Applying lesson study will be beneficial for teaching practice students in guiding them about the.way to teach English effectively. This paper will talk about the use of lesson study with the expectation to promote students' ability in teaching practice.

Abstract

The use of social media becomes more popular for the students nowadays. Social media is web-based application that allows users to communicate, collaborate, and share resources with other people. Both being easy to access and easy to use make social media become a very effective tool to communicate and exchange ideas. Students may use social media to keep up with their friends, to stay up-to-date with news and current events, to fill up spare time, to find entertaining content, and to share opinions. Thus, the popularity of the social media among students can be used as a tool in language teaching. One of the popular social media is Instagram. It is a social network that enables its users to take pictures and videos, and share them publicly or privately on the application, as well as through a variety of other social network, such as Facebook and Twitter. Through Instagram the students can post photos or videos that can be commented by their followers. By using Instagram teachers are offered greatopportunity to develop classroom activities creatively. This paper will give an overview of the main advantages of using Instagram for EFL and offer a list of activities for which Instagram can be used.

Abstract

The readiness of grade IX students of SMP in facing the national exam is still not optimal. It can be seen from the obstacles encountered by the students related to the amount of material being studied and the limited time available at school. Furthermore, the students are also still unfamiliar with the UN questions tested due to the lack of practice in discussing UN questions. This problem can be overcomed by providing training to students on the use of reading strategies to be applied in answering English UN questions. The subjects of this service program are grade IX students of SMP Negeri 4 Solok City who will take the national exam. The use of reading strategies is an approach to understand English texts that can be used in solving English UN questions. The method of implementing this service program is carried out through several stages, namely (1) giving try out to assess students' ability to answer UN questions, (2) giving guidance and training in using reading strategies in answering UN questions, and (3) giving final try out as evaluation of the implementation of community service activities. The results of this community service activity showed that students have broad insights on strategies to solve English National Examination questions. Students also become more enthusiastic and active in answering English UN questions. Besides that, students also get information that is very useful in preparing themselves as early as possible to face the national exam. Given the large benefits of community service activities, it is necessary to provide intensive and structured training for grade IX students of SMP on tips and tricks for answering English UN questions easily.

Abstract

The readiness of elementary school teachers to use online learning media during the COVID-19 pandemic remains very low. Many teachers are unable to optimize various features of online teaching media, such as the use of WhatsApp. This was also experienced by teachers at SD Negeri 10 Pianggu, IX Koto Sungai Lasi sub-district. Not all teachers can make the best use of WhatsApp as an online learning tool. Some teachers are still unaware of the features accessible on WhatsApp that might be utilized as a learning assistance tool. Therefore it is necessary to provide training for teachers at SD Negeri 10 Pianggu, IX Koto Sungai Lasi sub-district in presenting learning materials through the use of WhatsApp. The implementation of service activities is carried out by providing training through lectures, discussions, and practices. Teachers were given information and knowledge about WhatsApp as a means of online learning medium during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the training activities that were conducted, the teachers demonstrated an eager attitude and a desire to learn more about various features on Whatsapp. Teachers receive training materials fast and can utilize the WhatsApp group as an effective online teaching tool, so the training generates favorable feedback.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe conventional implicatures in the Republic of Social Media Segment 4 (Roasting) on ​​Trans TV. The theories used in this study include: (a) the nature of pragmatics, (b) the nature of implicatures, (c) conventional implicatures, and (d) the Republic of Social Media program on Trans TV. This research used a descriptive method. Sources of data in this study were comics and guest stars in the Republik Sosmed program in segment 4 (Roasting) on ​​Trans TV. The results of this study include: (a) on the Republic of Social Media program segment 4 (roasting), there were 5 conventional implicature data, (b) on October 08, 2017 presented comic Ridwan Remin, there were 2 conventional implicature data, (c) on October 14, 2017 presented comic Ridwan Remin, there were 3 implicature data, (d) on October 15 2017 presenting comic Yuda Keling, there were 3 conventional implicature data, (e) on October 21 2017 presenting comics Tretan and Rizki, there was 1 conventional implicature data, (f) on October 22, 2017 presenting the comics Tretan and Coki, there were 2 conventional implicature data, (g) on ​​October 28, 2017 presenting, the comic Yuda Keling there was 1 conventional implicature data, and (h) on October 29, 2017 presenting the comic Yuda Keling, there were 3 conventional implicature data.

Abstract

This study intends to investigate lecturers' practices for teaching speaking in online learning during pandemic COVID-19. For Lecturer, online learning has posed a new challenge, particularly in the area of teaching speaking. To make the lesson more exciting, the lecturer requires a strategy and should be able to mix it with online learning media. The research was descriptive qualitative study. The study focused on two UNSIKA-speaking lecturers. For the study, the researcher employed observation and interviews as instruments. According to the findings of the study, lecturers employ a variety of strategies to teach speaking, including podcasts, debates, and story-telling, retelling, dialogue, and drama. The lecturer combined some media in learning: whatsapp, zoom, microsof team, google meet, google classroom, youtube and edmodo.

Abstract

This study aims to give an overview of potential online writing tools that can be used in teaching writing for EFL university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study was a literature review. It explicates online writing tools and reviews previous research exploring the use of these applications for teaching writing. The data was obtained from articles in online academic journals. There were three databases and sites used in finding the articles; Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Research gate. The result shows that there are three potential online writing toolsapplicable for EFL university students in learning writing from home namely Paragraph Punch, Pro-Writing Aid, and Edmodo. Finally, some suggestions are also offered for lecturers and students regarding the use of online writing tools in teaching writing.

Abstract

This research was conducted at the third year students of English Department Universitas Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin Kota Solok 2017/2018 academic year. This research was aimed to know the students’ perception on the use of Google Classroom in submitting their assignments in Translation Subject. The background of the research based on the problems that raised by the students who had problems in submitting their Translation Subject assignments. The lecturer copes the problems by using Google Classroom as a media for submitting students’ assignments. This research was conducted by using descriptive method. The subject of the research was the third year students of English Department of Universitas Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin 2017/2018 academic year. In collecting the data, researcher used questionnaire.The findings of this research showed that the students’ perception on the use of Google Classroom in submitting their assignments in Translation Subject was in “good” level. It means that, the students’ perception on the use of Google Classroom in submitting their Translation Subject assignments of universitas mahaputra Muhammad yamin was good. It can be seen by the students’ positive response in responding the questionnaire statements about Google Classroom in submitting their assignments in Translation Subject. This research gives suggestion to the lecturer to use Google Classroom as a media in submitting assignments. For the students, it expected to be more interested and active in using Google Classroom.

Abstract

English language ability is one of the skills that must be possessed by college students, including nursing students. Having good English skills will open broad opportunities for increasing the competency and expertise of nursing students. One form of recognition of good English skills is to have a high TOEFL score. However, getting a high TOEFL score is still a challenge for nursing students. Facts in the field show that many nursing students find it difficult to achieve high scores on the TOEFL test. The most common form of difficulty is the problem in answering questions related to the structure and written expression section in the Paper-Based TOEFL test. The purpose of this research is to investigate nursing students’ difficulties in the structure and written expressions section tested in the Paper-Based TOEFL. The population of this study was 80 nursing students of POLTEKES Solok, and the sample was selected by using cluster random sampling. Data of the research was collected through tests and interviews. The result of the research found that that there were 8 items considered as the most difficult elements met by nursing students in the TOEFL test. These items were word order, parallel structure, singular and plural nouns, missing and extra words, articles, comparative and superlative, word choice, and word form. In addition, the findings also show that several factors influence nursing students' difficulties in the structure and written expression section. The factors were unfamiliarity with the TOEFL test, lack of practice, and lack of grammatical competence.Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris merupakan salah satu keterampilan yang harus dimiliki oleh mahasiswa perguruan tinggi, termasuk mahasiswa keperawatan. Dengan memiliki keterampilan bahasa Inggris yang baik akan membuka kesempatan yang luas terhadap peningkatan kompetensi dan keahlian mahasiswa keperawatan. Salah satu bentuk pengakuan dari kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang baik ialah memiliki skor TOEFL yang tinggi. Namun, mendapatkan nilai yang tinggi dalam test TOEFL masih menjadi tantangan tersendiri bagi mahasiswa keperawatan. Fakta di lapangan menunjukkan bahwa masih banyak mahasiswa keperawatan yang kesulitan untuk bisa mencapai skor tinggi dalam tes TOEFL. Bentuk kesulitan yang paling banyak ditemui adalah permasalahan dalam menjawab soal yang berkaitan dengan structure dan written expression section pada Paper-Based TOEFL test. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh mahasiswa keperawatan POLTEKES Solok dalam menjawab structure dan written expression section yang diuji dalam Paper-Based TOEFL. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 80 orang mahasiswa keperawatan, dan sampel penelitian ini dipilih dengan menggunakan cluster random sampling. Data dari penelitian ini  dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan tes dan interview. Dari temuan penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada 8 item yang dianggap sebagai elemen paling sulit yang ditemui mahasiswa keperawatan dalam tes TOEFL. Item-item tersebut adalah word order, parallel structure, singular and plural noun, missing dan extra words, article, comparative and superlative, word choice, dan word form.Selain itu, temuan ini juga menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa faktor yang mempengaruhi kesulitan siswa dalam structure and written epression section. Faktor-faktor tersebut adalah tidak terbiasa dengan tes TOEFL, kurangnya latihan, dan kurangnya penguasaan tata bahasa.Kata Kunci: TOEFL, Structure and Written Expression Section, Mahasiswa Keperawatan
