Abstract

Fanon in his book titled ‘Black Skin, White Masks’ says that no matter how smart black people may become, white people will always feel the sense of ‘inferiority’ in which black people speak Pidgin. The sense of imitation of imitating makes  the colonizer culture, in which the black people come across inferior from the white’s perspective. KingYaw’s YouTube video tries to break such a false perception. In his video, he talks the way black people have their unique accent It cannot be  compared to the Received Pronunciation (BrE). Therefore, this study aims to unravel the linguistic theory on language variation as a part of the World-Englishes movement. This study uses descriptive qualitative method by having one of KingYaw’s video performing and reciting a poem titled “Accent” that was uploaded in YouTube on December 17th, 2018. Post-colonialism allows the people to see the world without discrimination.

Abstract

Apart from being a medium for entertainment simulation, video games also provide a representation of the social world. Game industry developers always carry out research to provide socio-cultural, historical and philosophical system content to enrich the content in the game. The story background in video games aims to provide experiences and impressions for the players. This research aims to qualitatively explore forms of religious representation that are simulated in open world video games. So players can play role characters in the game to experience spirituality and religiosity. Either through latent and manifest narratives or through moral choices in the context of developing the storyline and Player character in the Game. This research uses Emile Durkehim's sociological perspective of religion regarding Karl Marx's totemism and commodity fetishism to observe the incarnation of the gaming industry as an altar of worship for its players, as well as Jean Baudrillard's postmodernist perspective with his simulacrum concept to analyze the form of simulation and representation of religious symbols that appear in the game. these open world games... This research finds that the use of simulations and the distribution of representations of religious signs or symbols in games forms a religion simulacrum or a blurring of spiritual boundaries between the pseudo and the real. Video games build the Player's construction of religiosity and spirituality virtually in a simulated world that contains ritual practices, ethics, morality, cosmology, metaphysics, and theology.

Abstract

This paper examines the presence of Chinese descendants on Bangka Island, focusing on assimilating the Khek language, spoken by the Hakka community, by studying the hybridization across four sub-districts: Pangkalpinang, Sungaliat, Muntok, and Belinyu. Using the qualitative methods, including interviews and recordings of daily conversations, this paper analyzes the linguistic choices and semantic shifts in Khek by discussing the characteristics of the Khek language. This study has two main objectives: (1) to identify the lexical patterns and meaning of the Khek language in everyday use, and (2) to explore the socio-historical factors influencing Khek’s development on Bangka island. Findings show significant language assimilation between Khek and Bangka Malay, shaped by the socio-historical interactions. This research contributes to understanding the linguistic assimilation process and the mutual influence of speech communities in a multilingual context, shedding light on the mutual influence of language communities and the preservation of linguistic identity amid assimilation.

Abstract

This paper shows the two problems namely circularity and obscurity relating to dictionary definition and its solutions. The two problems are mostly attached in the definition from both online and written dictionary of Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. The topic is chosen since it contains the daily problem encountered when consulting the dictionary. The data are collected by showing the words that have circularity and obscurity each of them are twenty words. Next, the data is analyzed through the high frequency of words that contains both problems. The solutions are also offered for both the word-seekers and the lexicographers to get the better definition in the future. Facing the problem of circularity, it is better to the word-seekers to collect the information from the words and combine them into good information. The obscurity can be solved into two ways namely controlled defining vocabulary and full-sentence definition. Lastly, the writer suggest to the next researchers to gain more data and solution to get the better revision.

Abstract

The phenomenon of phonological error as the common sense in pronouncing the words not only happens among beginners but also among the advanced English learners. The English learners are also active speakers who use English as their second language used such as in a formal situation. They tend to pronounce the same for words that have same spelling as other words in most parts of the words or even thewhole words but of different parts of speech. The present writers’ study tries to answer the question on how the English learners’ pronunciation is influenced by words with the same spelling. The participants of the study were Indonesian college students who learned English at the advanced level. In order to get the data, they were given word lists that contained a number of words and then asked to pronounce them. These words were suspected as common mistakes pronounced by the advanced learners. For example the word ‘determine’ is pronounced the same as the word ‘mine’, the word ‘preface’ is pronounced as ‘face’. In this study, the result reveals that the English learners tend to pronounce the words that refer to other words that contain the same orthography. Orthographically, the words and part of the words have the same spelling but they do not share the same pronunciation. Therefore, this error is commonly found among English learners even among those of the advanced level.

Abstract

Living in the society’s expectation is like we are forced to do what they want us to do and it is in the circle of hell. At one time, we need society as the means to communicate and be a natural human being. At the other hands, its culture and custom destroy ourselves especially those who have sexist culture and custom. This Bangladesh short story titled Seduction is one of the representatives of society that has sexist culture. It tells about a young girl who is forced to marry at the young age and becomes the object of her husband’s sexual trinket. What the writer wants to emphasize is the way the author named Razia Sultana Khan describe the treatment and the culture through Paul Gee’s seven language blocks’ perspective. The result of the discussion is that this short story, indeed, contains some of the seven building blocks that are significance, activities, identities, relationships, politics, connections and sign systems and knowledge.

Abstract

Gambus and song lyrics complement each other, creating harmony while representing the history and cultural identity of their communities. This study aims to explore identity through diction choices, phonological processes, and musical notes in Gambus. These elements are assumed to reflect social relations and cultural identity. The sociolinguistic theory of isolect and identity theory are applied to analyze the lyrics and musical notes. This qualitative descriptive study employs library research using the song lyrics of Ketepik Belian Padi and the Gambus melody played by Sukino (a Gambus maestro) and his daughter, accessible at https://youtu.be/wEJMsTUhY9c. The research addresses two questions: (1) How is Ketepik Belian Padi in Gambus Belitung portrayed as a social identity? and (2) How is Ketepik Belian Padi in Gambus Belitung used as an element of social identity? The findings show that the identity of the people of East Belitung is deeply influenced by historical events and is preserved through these song lyrics.
