Abstract

Even though it is not directly included in the history study material, local politic dynamics in regional autonomy era can also be a challenge for history study at pre-university level. Negative excess of regional autonomy policy implementation and politic development after “Orde Baru” era that is likely to challenge the effectiveness of nationalism and national country existence can be a special challenge for history study, and civic education in general. At one side, the comprehensive history teaching will develop contextual nationalism spirit to the youth but at the other side, the phenomenon of regional autonomy implementation and local politic dynamics in the reformation era will challenge the existence of the nationality spirit, due to the spirits emerged and strengthened are the ethnocentrism, ethnicity, social conflict, and separatism. Special strategy for history study at school will be necessary to overcome the issue.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the process and results of the 1977 Election in West Sumatra. Unlike at the national level taking place under intense competition, the second election during the New Order regime in West Sumatra seemed relatively “quiet.” Golkar comes out as the superior champion. The vote acquisition surpassed the Golkar votes nationally and passed the “Beringin” achievement in the 1971 Election. This study uses a structural history approach. The results show its specific dynamics in West Sumatra, which differed from the national elections. This study uses the historical method of heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. In the heuristic stage, data were obtained through library research, documentation and archives, field observations, and interviews with selected resource persons based on source criticism. The study results reveal that the 1977 Election in West Sumatra not only resulted in an increase in Golkar’s votes and the defeat of the “opposition party,” especially the PPP, but also signaled the continued consolidation of the New Order regime in Minangkabau. Cite this article: Israr, Zuhdi, S., Abdurakhman. Abstract

This article attempts to describe the role and the pursuit of women’s leadership in Nagari (the villages) in West Sumatra. The issue is related to success of women appeared as Wali Nagari (Nagari’s formal leader) in the Era of Reform with a case study of Wali Nagari Batu Basa in Dictrict Tanah Datar. The victory of Bariana Sain, a middle-aged woman, even in a direct election in 2009, as a wali nagari Batu Basa are a new chapter in political history of women in West Sumatra. Previous elections with representative system at Nagari’s People’s Representative Council (BPRN) tends to choose men as wali nagari. However, democratization in the Reform Era have influenced the “perception” of local community towards women’s leadership. A victory of women as formal leaders in the Nagari Batu Basa was not only reflection of an egalitarian attitude of society, but also the competence of the women figure. Another winning factor is, of course, also related to the declining her rivals popularity, including incumbent.

Abstract

The role and existence of the mass media, especially the print media, in the process and efforts to restore and rebuild the West Sumatra region in the early days of the New Order was very important. The mass media in question are not only those that exist in West Sumatra, but also those published in overseas areas. Among the mass media published and managed by the diaspora (migrants) from Minangkabau is Aneka Minang magazine. This ethnic Minangkabau magazine published in Jakarta is not only circulated in overseas areas, especially Java, but also in West Sumatra itself. By using historical research methods, namely heuristics (source collection), criticism (external and internal), interpretation and historiography (historical writing). The research results reveal the significant role of Aneka Minang magazine as a mass media of Minangkabau people published in overseas areas in assisting the recovery and rebuilding program of West Sumatra after being devastated by the political upheaval of the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia (PRRI) and the turbulent transition between the Old Order (Guided Democracy) regime to the New Order in the region.

Abstract

The Kampia craft, a traditional weaving of pandan leaves from Jorong Kuok III Koto, Nagari Matua Mudiak, faces sustainability threats due to modernization. This community service program aims to revitalize Kampia art by enhancing artisans' capacities, marketing innovations, and intergenerational education. The program was structured into three phases: preparation, implementation, and mentoring. The first phase included field surveys and the development of a roadmap. The second phase encompassed training in design innovation, product diversification, and branding and marketing strategies. The last phase ensured sustainability through ongoing monitoring and support. As a result, artisans had successfully created innovative products, and the Kampia community has emerged as a collaborative and marketing platform. Workshops and the Kampia Festival effectively showcased and sold 21 products developed from the training sessions. By adopting an integrative approach that combines cultural preservation and creative economy principles, Kampia has the potential to become a cultural icon and a premier local product.

Abstract

This article examines the role of Islamic parties in West Sumatra concerning central-regional relations before and after the 1955 General Election, specifically during the 1950s. The historical study reveals that political landscape in Central Sumatra after the 1955 General Elections was non-linear.  Central Sematra was dominated by Islamic parties, especiallly Masyumi Party,  in contrast to the national election results, whichwere won by secular parties, especially the PNI. This discrepancy significantly impacted the escalation of conflict between the region and the central political authorities.  This central-regional conflict culminated in the PRRI rebellion between 1958 and 1961 which was not only contributed to the decline of Islamic parties but also reshaped  the historical narrative concerning the role of the Minangkabau ethnic group in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the dynamics of the triangle interaction of President Sukarno, the Indonesian Army, and the Communist Party of Indonesia during the Guided Democracy era, utilizing many new sources. The three predominant political entities that surfaced following the 1959 Presidential Decree not only offered political "direction" for that age but also illustrated a multifaceted triangle dynamic characterized by cooperation, competitiveness, and conflict. This research employs the four stages of the historical method to demonstrate that the political relationship among Sukarno, the Indonesian Army, and the Communist Party of Indonesia during the Guided Democracy era not only exhibited dynamic tensions but also culminated in the most catastrophic tragedy in the annals of independent Indonesia.
