Abstract

The monetary policy transmission mechanism has many ways in influencing inflation. This method became known as the monetary path. The use of appropriate channels in monetary policy will affect whether or not the objectives of the monetary policy are achieved. This study aims to determine which monetary path is appropriate for Indonesia, which is a developing country with an open economic system. The data used are secondary data taken from Bank Indonesia for the period 2005 to 2016. The research variables include inflation, BI-rate, credit interest rates (SBB), gross domestic product (GDP), exchange rate, bank reserve (BBR), and the amount of credit extended. This study focuses on the path of interest rates, exchange rates and bank credit using the Error Correction Model (ECM). The results of this study indicate that the right monetary path for Indonesia is the credit channel. This is because the value of the Error Correction Term (ECT) coefficient on the ECM model shows that the coefficient of the credit channel is smaller than the interest rate and exchange rate channel, which means that the imbalance that occurs can be resolved more quickly with the credit channel.

Abstract

In the past decade, the profits obtained by banks in Indonesia have generally tended to increase, except during the pandemic. However, the number of banking business actors in Indonesia has continued to decline, indicating that the banking structure is becoming more concentrated and potentially leading to an oligopoly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine whether the increasingly concentrated banking market structure or weak competition has a significant impact on the growing profitability of banks in Indonesia. If this hypothesis is proven true, it would suggest that banking, as a financial intermediary, contributes to higher costs for economic development, particularly within financial markets. In this study, the Lerner index is employed to measure the level of concentration or competition among banks. Subsequently, the Treatment Effect Model is utilized to estimate the extent of the impact of competition levels on profitability within the banking sector. The findings of the study reveal two key points. Firstly, the reduction in the number of banking players has been accompanied by increased competition among banks in Indonesia, particularly evident after 2016. Secondly, a higher level of concentration or reduced competition corresponds to increased opportunities for banking profitability. Consequently, there are indications that the decrease in the number of banking business actors in Indonesia is correlated with heightened competition, suggesting improved efficiency in banking management. This phenomenon could elucidate the reason why profitability in the banking sector appears to be on the rise despite a decrease in the number of banking players.

Abstract

Debt remains a primary source of financing for economic development in developing countries. According to data, there was a sharp economic decline and a significant increase in debt levels among developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic 2019. This indicates a tendency for governments to rely on debt during the recovery period. Theoretically, debt can have either positive or negative impacts on economic development. This implies that debt can serve as a growth engine or become a developmental burden. Amid this debate, this study aims to identify the impact of debt on economic growth in Southeast Asian developing countries (Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Cambodia) from 2009 to 2022. Using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method, we find that debt negatively impacts economic growth in both the short and long term. Additionally, another variable, inflation, also negatively affects economic growth in the long term. Therefore, governments must adopt prudent debt management principles and implement strategic policies to ensure that debt is allocated to finance productive sectors.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the inhibiting factors in the implementation of inclusive education in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach through literature review and supported by interviews, the research reveals five key barriers affecting the effectiveness of inclusive education: (1) limited teacher competence and educational personnel, (2) insufficient infrastructure and support facilities, (3) social stigma and negative public attitudes towards children with special needs (CWSN), (4) institutional unpreparedness, and (5) socioeconomic inequality and uneven distribution of inclusive schools. The findings highlight that the success of inclusive education depends on synergy between policies, institutional readiness, and societal attitude shifts. The study recommends continuous teacher training, improved educational infrastructure, and public awareness campaigns to support a more inclusive education system in the future.

Abstract

From a theoretical standpoint, volatility in the capital market and the foreign exchange market is linked through a bidirectional causal mechanism, underscoring the close interdependence between the rupiah exchange rate and equity prices in Indonesia. This study aims to empirically investigate the nature and dynamics of this relationship, thereby providing robust validation of the interconnection between the two markets. Utilizing a time series framework, specifically the Vector Autoregression (VAR) model, the analysis covers the period from 1995 to 2024. The empirical findings confirm the existence of a two-way causal linkage between the rupiah exchange rate and equity prices, with both markets exhibiting strong and immediate responses to shocks originating in either domain.

Abstract

Abstract

In international economic studies, the relationship between exports and economic growth has long been a subject of debate. Two key hypotheses growth-led export and export-led growth have been proposed to explain this linkage. This study investigates the validity of both hypotheses in four ASEAN NICs (Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines) from 2000 to 2023 using the Granger Causality Test. It also examines the interaction between the two variables through a linear framework utilizing the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. The Granger causality results indicate that economic growth causally influences exports, thereby supporting the growth-led export hypothesis in all four countries. Moreover, the ARDL findings reveal that economic growth exerts a positive impact on exports in both the short and long term. These results underscore the importance of promoting economic activity, particularly in productive sectors that can strengthen export performance.
