Abstract

Objective: To examine the correlation between physical activity using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), anthropometry (body mass index/BMI), and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) value with six-minute walk distance in healthy community-dwelling elderly. Methods: A cross-sectional design study with consecutive sampling was conducted. This study included sixty nine participants (30 males and 39 females), aged ≥60 years who lives at Batununggal region in Bandung, Indonesia. The data was analyzed statistically by using normality, correlation, and multiple regresion tests. Results: The results showed that there was a correlation between six-minute walk distance and BMI in females (p=0.006), and FEV1 value in males (p=0.010). No significant correlation was found between GPAQ value and six-minute walk distance in females (p=0.4074) and in males (p=0.0926). Conclusions: There was a correlation between anthropometry and FEV1 value with six-minute walk distance in healthy elderly. There was no significant correlation between physical activity and six-minute walk distance. Abstract

Objective: To examine sit-to-stand and loaded sit-to-stand exercises effect in standing, walking, and running dimensions of gross motor function measure (GMFM) in spastic diplegia cerebral palsy (SDCP) patients. Methods: This study was conducted in the period of May to October 2014 and included 24 children with SDCP as the subjects. The methods used in the study were interventional study with randomized controlled trial, and investigation of CP before and after the exercise intervention. The subjects were divided into two groups, sit-to-stand exercise group and loaded sit-to-stand exercise group. Results: The results showed that the increase of standing, walking, and running dimension scores of GMFM in the loaded group were higher (standing dimension score 12.00 vs 11.08 and walking and running dimensions 13.58 vs 13.42) compared to the unloaded group. Conclusions: Both sit-to-stand and loaded sit-to-stand exercise groups do not show significant differences in improving motor skills in standing, walking, and running dimensions of GMFM. Children with SDCP may receive the exercise to improve their motor skills in mobility aspects, such as standing, walking, and running. Abstract

Objective: To discover whether quadriceps resistance exercise could increase quadriceps strength as well as its relation to lower extremity lean mass. Methods: This study was a pre- and post- experimental study in which 36 participants with knee OA grade 2 and 3 were recruited. Assesment of leg lean mass and quadriceps strength was taken before and after intervention. Participants practiced quadriceps isotonic resistance exercise 3 times a week for 8 weeks. This study was conducted in Dr. Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, Bandung from September 2014 to February 2015.Results: After the intervention, an increase in quadriceps strength was seen but not in the lower extremity lean mass. Statistical analysis showed that there was no correlation between lower extremity lean mass and quadriceps strength. Conclusions: Quadriceps strength is found to increase after intervention. No increase is found in the lower extremity lean mass. Keywords: Osteoarthritis, leg lean mass, quadriceps strength, quadriceps strengthening exercise DOI: 10.15850/ijihs.v5n2.1010

Abstract

Objective: To compare the VO2 max and physiological responses between 12-minute and 3200-meter run fitness tests. Methods: The subjects were 40 soldiers aged 18–21 years old of the Infantry Battalion 303/SSM of Cikajang, Garut, West Java, Indonesia. The 12-minute and 3200-meter run fitness tests were conducted with one week resting period. The measurement of the VO2 max prediction was based on each of the formulations and the measurement of physiological response included blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, Borg scale and oxygen saturation before and after the tests. This study used a cross-sectional method while the data were analyzed statistically using t-test (p=0.05). Results: The results showed that the VO2 max prediction in 12-minute run fitness test was 52.046±2.980 mL/KgBB/min and the 3200-meter run test was 55.323±3.238 mL/KgBB/min. The value was statistically significant (p=0.008). There was no significant difference in the physiological response in both tests, except the SpO2 parameter after the tests (p=0.021). Conclusions: There is a significant difference in VO2 max prediction between 12 minutes and 3200 meter run test. No significant difference was found in the physiological response in both tests, except the SpO2 parameter. Abstract

Knee Osteoarthritis (KOA) is characterized by knee cartilage degradation. Knee Osteoarthritis symptoms are joint pain, stiffness, quadriceps muscle weakness and daily activities difficulties. The use of Kinesio Taping (KT) in Quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises (QSE) is known to increase quadriceps muscle strength, reduce pain and improve functional abilities in KOA. This study aimed to determine the effect of KT with QSE on quadriceps muscle strength and functional status in KOA. This is a double-blind randomized controlled trial, involving twenty-six KOA women that were divided equally into treatment and control groups. The treatment group was given KT and QSE, the control group received sham taping and QSE. Quadriceps muscle strength and WOMAC scores were measured before and after treatment at 4, 6 and 8 weeks. There was a significant difference in quadriceps muscle strength at the 6th week (p = 0.019) between treatment and control groups and no significant differences (p> 0.05) in the strength of quadriceps muscle at 4th and 8th weeks and WOMAC values ??at 4th, 6th and 8th weeks. We concluded that a combination of KT with QSE offers advantages for improvement of quadriceps muscle strength at 6th week but not for functional status in KOA. Abstract

Objective: To obtain normal value of thorax expansion in relation with age, gender, body weight, and body height and also its correlation with normal values of spirometry. Methods: Values of three levels of thorax expansion were attained from 196 normal healthy subjects(aged 21-40 years old) whose spirometry results were within normal range. Results: This study revealed mean thorax expansion in level I (axilla) as 6.03 (1.44) cm, level II(4th intercostal space) 6.69 (1.43) cm and level III (xyphoid process) 6.9 (1.7) cm. Male subjectsshowed bigger value of thorax expansion. In association with spirometry, thorax expansion positivecorrelatedsignificantly with FVC (p 0.01) and FEV1 (p 0.04).Conclusion: Normal values of thorax expansion and its relations with several variables weredescribed from within 196 normal-healthy subjects. Its correlation with spirometry values showedthe ability to predict the expansion of lung from the expansion of the external thorax. Keywords: thorax expansion, spirometry
