Abstract

 This paper explains about the use of gestures by students in group presentation. This research is descriptive research where the participant is the first year students of English Department of STKIP PGRI West Sumatra in academic year 2015/2016 in A and B class. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. The instrument of this research is observation. The result of this research is students used gestures in group presentation. Gestures are used in many situations such as when the students explain and deliver the information and opinions and also to give the instructions. Types of gesture which are stated by McNeill (1992), they are Iconic, Metaphoric, Deictic, and Beat gesture appear during process of group presentation. Iconic appears 12 times, this gesture has a function to describe the semantic information. Metaphoric appears 15 times, this gesture has a function to represent abstract content. Deictic appears 18 times, this gesture has a function to pointing and give the instructions. Beat appears 10 times, this gesture has a function help to find the words.

Abstract

Ketidakkonsistenan dalam melafalkan bunyi rangkap vokal adalah suatu permasalahan yang sering kali ditemukan pada pelajar dalam melafalkan suatu bunyi huruf. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan tentang ketidakkonsistenan bunyi rangkap vokal yang dilafalkan oleh mahasiswa dalam aktifitas membaca dengan suara lantang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Sampel pada penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa tahun kedua program  studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat yang berjumlah 9 mahasiswa yang mendapatkan nilai standar hingga minimum dalam mata kuliah pronunciation dari sesi yang berbeda berdasarkan kebutuhan penelitian yang memiliki masalah dalam pelafalan bunyi pada aktifitas membaca dengan lantang yang dilihat pada ketidakkonsistenan melafalkan rangkap vokal. Data dikumpulkan dengan melakukan pengamatan melalui instrumen pendukung penelitian yaitu tes dan rekaman video. Test adalah instrumen yang diberikan kepada sampel dengan bentuk teks untuk dibaca dengan suara lantang yang mengandung bunyi vokal rangkap dalam pengamatan pronunciation, serta rekaman video sebagai instrumen perekam yang bertujuan untuk menganalisa bunyi rangkap vokal yang tidakkonsisten yang dilafalkan mahasiswa dalam aktifitas membaca dengan suara lantang. Hasil dari analisa penelitian ini, terdapat 5 buah bunyi yang tidak konsisten dalam pelafalannya, yaitu bunyi. [ɪə], [eɪ], [aɪ], dan [ɔʊ].

Abstract

Majority of Senior High School students thought that pronunciation is challenging. However, the use of application in the learning process could effectively assist students. The aim of this research is to identify the perceptions of students about the use of Spotify to learn pronunciation. The survey research was used to carry out this study. Thirty senior high school students were invited to fill the online questionnaire. After collecting the data, the researchers analyzed the data by using SPSS and presented descriptively. The result revealed that the students as the sample gave positive responses about the use of Spotify as media of learning English especially to learn pronunciation. English songs on Spotify could be useful for students in the process of learning English, it could be an easy and simple media for students to learn English. It was suggested to English teachers to find out students’ interests so the learning process would be more enjoyable and make students could receive the lessons given well

Abstract

AbstractThis research aims to identify the types of questions used by English teachers in the classroom, focusing on convergent and divergent questions. Therefore, the researcher employed a descriptive qualitative research method for this study. The participants in this research were two English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Lubuk Sikaping, Pasaman. Each teacher was responsible for teaching eighth-grade classes. The research data were collected using a video recorder to record the teaching and learning process in the classroom. The researcher conducted observations by using a video recorder as a tool during the observation process. The results of the data analysis from the observations revealed that English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Lubuk Sikaping, Pasaman, utilized both convergent and divergent questions during the learning process. However, in practice, teachers more frequently used convergent questions compared to divergent questions to guide and stimulate students' critical thinking.Keywords: Teachers’ Questions, Convergent Questions, Divergent Questions AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat tipe-tipe pertanyaan guru bahasa inggris didalam kelas yang berfokus pada pertanyaan konvergen dan divergen. Oleh karena itu peneliti menggunakan metode descriptive qualitative research untuk penelitian ini. Partisipasi dalam penelitian ini adalah dua orang guru bahasa inggris SMP Negeri 1 lubuk Sikaping, Pasaman. Masing-masing guru mempunyai tugas mengajar dikelas delapan. Data penelitan dikumpulkan menggunakan alat perekam video (video recorder) untuk merekam proses pembelajaran dikelas. Peneliti melakukan observasi dengan menggunakan observation (video recorder) sebagai alat selama observasi. Hasil analisis data observasi menunjukkan bahwa guru Bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 1 Lubuk Sikaping, Pasaman, menggunakan pertanyaan konvergen dan divergen selama proses pemnelajaran. Namun, dalam praktiknya, guru lebih sering menggunakan pertanyaan konvergen dibandingkan dengan pertanyaan divergen untuk membimbing dan menstimulasi pemikiran kritis siswa.Kata kunci: Pertanyaan Guru, Pertanyaan konvergen, Pertanyaan divergen

Abstract

This research is aimed at finding out the types of students’ communicatin  styles in speaking class. In teaching and learning proccess, the students ofcourse have different communication styles. It depends on the students’ skill and readiness in performing their skill of  communication in speaking class. This research, then belongs to descriptive with qualitative approach. The researcher used random sampling to determine the participants. There are 54 videos of the students’s speaking collected, meanwhile the researcher only takes 11 documents as the participants. The instruments of this research are video recordings and document checklists. There are three communication styles that the researcher concerned with, namely passive, aggessive, and assertive. From the research findings, it can be obviously stated that there are two communication styles found from the students’ speaking performace- they are passive and assertive. In brief, aggressive style is not found at all.
