Abstract

A film has a distinctive language in voicing protest. This article discusses how the film '27 Steps of May' speaks in silent scenes and unspoken discourses through a visual narrative covered in meaningful symbols. Using Barthesian semiotic analysis, we capture hidden messages of pain, trauma, suffering, struggle, rebellion, and speechless protests from a victim of sexual violence against patriarchal culture and an unjust social environment. Silence represents sadness as well as futile anger. The emptiness in the victim's expression signifies despair at the stigma and unchanging blame. The gloomy nuance that dominates the narrative in almost every scene is a form of endless bitterness. The minimalist sound effects not only reflect the emptiness of the victim's life, but also the cinematic effort to invite the audience (and society at large, of course) to contemplate together. Victims of sexual violence in Indonesia always experience multiple and lasting repressions: physical, psychological, social, cultural, structural, and even political. This film, with its empathetic spirit towards victims, uses a 'minimalist' visual narrative weapon to fatally shoot our human conscience.

Abstract

From the title, Akhir Penjantanan Dunia, this book seems heroic and obsessive about ending the oppressive ideology of patriarchy. And it is okay if it is also a marketing gimmick. There is mounting anger not only from the topic being discussed but also from the choice of words that are strong, straightforward, and, of course, critical (isn't this characteristic of feminist writers?). The author also mentions the matriarchal social system in human culture, such as in Minangkabau, West Sumatra, but, unfortunately, it is not discussed in more depth how this system works as a system that is not as oppressive as the patriarchate. Even so, this book presents many "flesh" arguments that need to be read by researchers of gender issues.

Abstract

Improving the quality of human resources (HR) depends on the parenting styles applied. Implementing incorrect parenting styles can impact the cognitive, affective, and conative aspects of an individual. When parents' educational approaches are influenced by traditional views on gender roles, gender stereotypes can unintentionally be integrated into child-rearing, in this case with adolescents. This can lead to inequality and create unhealthy parenting styles. Recognizing this, there is a need for literacy on parenting styles reviewed from the perspective of gender communication and media for parents and adolescents. Through Community Service (PkM) activities, the focus is to provide knowledge about parenting styles in the digital communication era and how to implement soft skills such as effective communication with teenagers. Subsequently, participants can apply three pillars in building a good relationship between parents and their teenagers, namely empathy, tolerance, and loyalty. This activity is aimed at parents with teenagers at the Family Welfare Development (PKK) in Pondok Kopi, East Jakarta. Therefore, this activity is needed to increase awareness and knowledge of the participants about Generation Z's attitudes and behaviors. Furthermore, the results from the post-test showed that participants were very enthusiastic about participating in this activity and expressed a desire for more such events to further explore Generation Z from the perspective of communication psychology.
