Abstract

During the Dutch colonial government, social protests under the leadership of some Islamic ulamas were suppressed ruthlessly. In 1710, during the time of the East India Company (VOC), some farmers from Jampang, Sukabumi led by two ulamas rebelled against the Company. Even after the Diponegoro war in Java in 1883, in 1885-1888 there were farmers fighting against the colonial government in Ciomas, Banten and the war was named a holy war, fi sabililah war, and so were in 1904 in Aceh and in 1919 in Cimareme, Garut. Since Islamophobia became a modern phenomenon, and it did not only happen in recent occurrence of the post World Trade Center tragedy, it has been taken place even in the past. The general colonial policy was cautious against Islam and it barred the growth of pesantren, or the religious schools, and marginalized them for its anti-modernist stand. Indonesia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia indirectly labeled Islam as terrorists.

Abstract

Trading activities in the Nusantara archipelago had developed into an international trade. According to Ricklef, Europe was not the most developed region in the world. The developing world at the time was in fact the Islamic world, stretching from the Middle East to the Nusantara. If we trace it further back into the past, to the pre-Islamic age, trade in the Nusantara region had developed, espcially during the golden eras of Sriwijaya and Majapahit. This paper describes the economic and trade development in the Nusantara before the 19th century.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the assumption that Nahdlatul Ulama is an organization that is not concerned with education. Whereas several contributions have been made by Nahdlatul Ulama in participating in advancing national education in Indonesia. This research proves the contribution of Nahdlatul Ulama to the current national education structure. For this reason, the method used is the historical research method and the method for collecting data with document studies, literature studies, and observation,. This study uses Anthony Giddens' structuration theory of agent, agency, structure, and duality of structure. This research produces evidence that the birth of the Joint Decree of Three Ministers is one part of the effort to recognize Islamic education by the state by accommodating existing madrasas for the pioneers of Nahdlatul Ulama figures as agents of change from the existing structure.

Abstract

The Islamic designation such as kiai or red ulema was used by supporters of The Green Association (SH) aimed at the elite of Islam who were labelled as communist or People’s Union (SR) and Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) activists. Giving a “red” label to the ulema was an effort to criminalize SH’s kiai and religious scholars supporting Islamic Association (SI) and it was considered harmful to the government authority. SH’s collective actions have succeeded enough in preventing the spread of Communism in the Priangan’s aristocrat community. Those actions were also managed to remove the sympathizers of the SI from the body of government’s bureaucracy. Yet, SH’s attempts to criminalize kiai and religious scholars using “red” label has failed. Even followers of the crime victim’s kiai had been increased, including the organization such as Al-Ittihadiyatul Islamiyyah (AII). Started from 1930s, SH’s collective actions started to decline until they completely disappeared.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v24i2.5019
