Abstract

Background: The use of gendered visual imagery in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks has raised concerns about perpetuating gender stereotypes and the potential effect on students' conceptions of gender roles. Despite the widespread use of mandated textbooks in primary classrooms in Indonesia, less is known about instructors' perceptions of gendered visual imagery. Methodology: This qualitative research employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative and qualitative data collection and analytic methodologies. An investigation was conducted in Samarinda East Kalimantan to collect the perspectives of 41 teachers who teach English in elementary school regarding the gendered visual representations present in the mandatory EFL textbooks. Furthermore, 12 teachers were chosen to partake in exhaustive interviews to present more informed and profound perspectives. Findings: They merely focused on how to teach the materials rather than scrutinizing the gender bias represented through texts and visual images. The study revealed that a significant proportion of teachers (80%) believed that gendered visual imagery in textbooks was not impartial and could influence the gender roles of pupils. Furthermore, a significant majority (75%) said they often adjusted or avoided using these pictures in their teaching methods. The interviews highlighted the teachers' concern about the possible negative impact of these pictures on students' social relationships and self-image. However, they merely focused on how to teach the materials rather than scrutinizing the gender bias represented through texts and visual images Conclusion: The findings suggest that elementary school teachers in Indonesia know the potential negative repercussions of gendered visual images in EFL textbooks and have implemented measures to mitigate these effects. The study underscores the importance of incorporating diverse and inclusive visual materials into educational resources to promote gender equality and positive gender representations. This concept is new to them. They agree that gender equality needs to be addressed and discussed as part of the content in classroom practices to raise students’ awareness of gender bias. Originality: Previous studies have investigated the frequency and occurrence of gender bias in textbooks, found in images and texts. However, there is a lack of investigation into teachers' awareness of gender stereotypes in textbooks. This study enhances the existing corpus of literature by examining the perspectives of teachers on the use of gendered visual images in EFL textbooks in elementary schools in Indonesia. It emphasizes the importance of teachers and policymakers advocating for more inclusive educational resources and considering the impact of visual materials on students' gender perceptions

Abstract

The result of this research explains the representation of sexism based on three English textbooks “English in Mind”. The focus of this research is to investigate the frequency of males and females, the representation of males and females in occupational roles, and the representation of males and females as inspiring persons based on pictures and reading texts. Thus, the study implements Fairclough's three-dimensional discourse approach: description, interpretation, and explanation for textbook analysis. The study revealed that the frequency of males and females was based on text and pictures. The male is more dominant than the female. Furthermore, males and females in this textbook were portrayed as having the power to do outdoor activities. As well, the female is not only portrayed as the housewife or taking care of the baby. Otherwise, the representation of males and females as inspiring persons variation sometimes comes to an unfamiliar person. Males were superior to females according to the frequency in three English textbooks “English in Mind”. However, the study educates to students be aware of sexism issues in real life, and also students have a perception that being stronger or more capable in some activity does not only refer to gender.

Abstract

This research explores teacher strategies in adapting authentic materials for reading instruction at vocational schools, identifying challenges faced by teachers and students. The study aims to investigate these strategies and challenges among tenth-grade AKL students at SMK Sangatta Utara during the 2023/2024 academic year. This qualitative case study examines the use of authentic materials in reading instruction at a vocational school. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and field notes with one English teacher and six tenth-grade students. Techniques included purposive sampling and Creswell’s (2014) data analysis method for organizing, coding, and interpreting findings. The study found that teachers employed strategies for selecting and adapting authentic materials for reading instruction, such as advertisements and articles, that were relevant to students' interests. Challenges included limited internet access, insufficient learning media, and students' difficulties with vocabulary and engagement. Teachers mitigated these challenges through personal hotspots, group activities, and additional support. This study reveals effective strategies for using authentic materials in teaching reading, highlighting the benefits of relevance and collaboration. However, challenges like limited internet access and multimedia resources persist. Recommendations include improving technological infrastructure, providing teacher training, and fostering local collaborations to enhance the use of authentic materials and support student engagement and learning outcome

Abstract

Reading is a crucial skill that Indonesian learners are expected to master, as outlined in the 2013 Curriculum. Students are required to develop comprehension skills to understand both explicit and implicit information in a text. To assess students’ knowledge, teachers often use tests. During these reading tests, students may employ strategies to aid their comprehension. This study investigates the strategies used by secondary high school students at MA Darul Ihsan Samarinda during an English reading comprehension test, along with the challenges they face when using these strategies. This study employs a qualitative design to examine the strategies utilized by six students: high score, middle score, and lowest score. The data, gathered through the think-aloud method and interviews, is analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that students employed 23 out of 31 strategies to answer factual questions and 19 strategies for inferential questions. Both the high score and middle score students predominantly used the strategy of reading the text for clues in both types of questions. Conversely, the lowest score student primarily relied on the strategy of rereading the question. Despite the differences, all students utilized a meaning-based text strategy to choose their answers. The middle score and lowest score students frequently faced challenges with time management and complex vocabulary. Additionally, using mixed-method research designs could provide deeper insights into test-taking strategies. This study focused on the strategies used by high school students during reading tests, while other research has examined test-taking strategies in high-stakes language tests

Abstract

This research aims to examine the level of ChatGPT usage and the attitudes of English Department students in Samarinda toward its role in academic learning. The research is grounded in the rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, particularly the increasing use of ChatGPT. A descriptive quantitative method was employed, using a validated questionnaire adapted from Sallam et al. (2024) which was distributed to 192 students from A University, B University, and C University. The data were analyzed using mean score calculations to determine the students’ level of usage and attitudes. The results showed that the majority of students (64.58%) used ChatGPT at a moderate level, indicating regular but not intensive engagement with the tool. In terms of attitudes, the majority of students (55.21%) demonstrated a neutral stance. Students generally found ChatGPT accessible and useful, although some expressed concerns related to academic integrity, data privacy, and overreliance on AI tools. In conclusion, English Department students in Samarinda are incorporating ChatGPT into their academic routines with both interest and caution. While they acknowledge its practical benefits, they also maintain a balanced perspective on its potential risks. These findings highlight the importance of promoting digital literacy and ethical awareness in the use of AI-based educational tools.

Abstract

Background: Listening is a core component of second language development, yet students in English as a Foreign Language settings often struggle with fast speech, accent variation, and limited exposure to authentic English. Specific background: Social media, especially TikTok, has become a popular platform where learners encounter natural language use through short, engaging videos. Knowledge gap: However, little is known about how university students experience TikTok as a self-directed space for English listening development. Aim: This study explores students’ lived experiences using TikTok to support English listening skills. Results: Findings show that frequent exposure to authentic speech, short video formats, and interactive features such as duets and live sessions contribute to students’ listening development. Challenges arise from speech rate, accent diversity, slang, and algorithm-driven distractions. Students responded with self-regulated strategies, including curating content, replaying difficult segments, activating captions, and verifying information through external sources. Novelty: This study highlights students’ internal reflections and the role of algorithmic personalization as a source of individualized linguistic input. Implications: Results suggest that TikTok can serve as an informal listening environment that complements formal instruction and supports listening awareness, learning autonomy, and confidence among EFL university students. Highlights Students describe TikTok as a consistent source of authentic English input. Learners use self-regulation strategies to manage challenges and curate content. TikTok functions as an informal space that supports listening development and confidence. Keywords TikTok, English Listening Skills, Autonomous Learning, Phenomenological Study, Digital Learning
