Abstract

Background: As student teachers shift to preservice teachers during teaching practice, it is necessary to find out how teaching practice could shape their identity and position, especially in the EFL context where English is taught as a foreign language. Based on this purpose, this study seeks information on preservice teacher identity and position during teaching practice by taking discourse analysis lenses. Methodology: This study used descriptive research to describe EFL preservice teachers’ identity construction and position. Adopting Fairclough's (2013) theory relationship between language, power and social used as data analysis. An interview transcript was used to investigate the meaning behind the spoken text of two EFL preservice teachers. Findings: The finding found they shared similar identity construction across two different contexts where preservice teachers conduct their teaching practice. Starting as a student at university and transferring to school as a teacher made them construct a new identity after several times teaching students and positioned themselves in school by participating in several activities. Conclusion: It found that positioning oneself could influence the identity development of preservice teachers. However, the unexpected condition that forced them to teach online made them feel less than a teacher and try to get an identity recognized by the environment by positioning themselves in the school context. Originality: In contrast to earlier studies that investigated the anxiety of preservice EFL students, this study focused on describing how EFL preservice teachers' identity construction related to the position assigned to them in the real classroom setting.

The differences between American and British English have drawn more attention in the continually changing field of English language instruction. This study aimed to investigate students' preferences regarding the distinctions between British and American English in terms of spelling and lexical usage. Conducted using a quantitative approach, the research involved administering a vocabulary test to 129 ninth-grade students in a private junior high school in Bontang. The findings indicated a prevalent inclination towards American English, with a majority of students showing a preference for American English spellings and terminologies over British English counterparts. Specifically, the data revealed that American English was mostly favored in 63.4% of the cases analyzed, highlighting the significant influence of American English on the linguistic choices of students. These results contribute to a better understanding of how language variations impact language preferences among students, shedding light on the dominance of American English in contemporary educational settings.

Abstract

The meaning of language is influenced not only by linguistic structures, but also by the cognitive processes that occur in the human mind. This article discusses how cognitive processing, such as perception, memory, and reasoning, plays a role in the formation of language meaning. This study uses a theoretical approach that integrates cognitive linguistics with psychological science to explain the relationship between mental representation and meaning. The results of the study show that the formation of meaning is a dynamic process involving sensory experience, social context, and pragmatic use of language. This knowledge is expected to enrich insights into how humans understand and use language in various communication situations. The cognitive process in the formation of language meaning includes several main stages, namely sensing, storage in working memory, and interpretation based on context. This process depends on the mental schema that the individual has, which is acquired through social experiences and interactions. Cognitive processing is also influenced by factors such as cultural bias, individual experience, and level of familiarity with a language. Meaning is not static, but rather evolves over time and depends on the dynamics of communication. In linguistic interactions, individuals utilize mechanisms such as analogies and associations to understand new or complex meanings. Cognitive processes play an important role in the formation of language meaning. Meaning is determined not only by grammatical structure but also by the way individuals process information through experience and context. This research emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the dynamics of meaning formation, which involves linguistics, psychology, and sociology. By understanding this process, we can improve strategies for language teaching, translation, and intercultural communication.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of storytelling as a teaching strategy for improving English language abilities among vocational students at SMKN 1 Samarinda. Recognizing a void in the literature on practical approaches for reducing speaking anxiety in EFL contexts, this study analyzes students’ perspectives of how storytelling impacts their confidence, discourse growth, and engagement. Data were acquired using a phenomenological technique via semi-structured interviews with three selected students, with validation provided by insights from their English teacher to increase the study’s credibility. The main findings show that storytelling boosts students’ confidence in speaking, promotes discourse expansion, and encourages active engagement in classroom activities. However, some challenges emerged, such as nervouness when presenting stories and concerns about peer evaluation. These elements occasionally prevented pupils from fully participating. The conclusion indicates that storytelling can be an effective method for creating a more participatory and encouraging language learning environment. Educators are advised to add narrative activities designed to reduce fear and improve confidence, allowing children to practice speaking abilities in a comfortable environment.

Abstract

This study explores the implementation of reflective teaching practices by an English lecturer instructing non-English major students and examines its contributions to professional development and classroom engagement. Reflective teaching involves a continuous cycle of self-assessment, adaptation, and improvement, which enables educators to refine their teaching methodologies to better meet students' needs. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research employed multiple data collection methods, including reflective journals, semi-structured interviews with the lecturer and students, and non-participant classroom observations. The findings indicate that reflective teaching significantly enhances lecturer self-awareness, fostering a more adaptive, student-centered instructional approach. By regularly analyzing his teaching methods and incorporating student feedback, the lecturer was able to create a more engaging and inclusive learning environment. Students reported increased motivation, participation, and comprehension as a result of these pedagogical adjustments. Even though the study found some benefits, it also found some problems that can make it hard to use reflective practices consistently. These problems include a lack of time and too much administrative work that should be done by the lecturer. The research underscores the importance of integrating reflective teaching into professional development programs to promote a culture of continuous learning among educators. Additionally, it highlights the need for further studies involving diverse educational settings to explore the long-term impacts of reflective teaching on both instructors and students. By addressing these gaps, future research can contribute to the development of more effective and sustainable approaches for incorporating reflection into higher education teaching practices
