Abstract

As the most commercially successful animated film, Cars trilogy, produced by Pixar Animation Studios, are opted to be analysed due to its impact on formulating perception of gender and race. Considering that intolerance and gender-based injustice still happens within our society, any discussion about gender and race portrayal, particularly through films, becomes urgent. The study aims at investigating how gender and race are portrayed in Cars trilogy. Gender portrayal is analysed through Beauvoir?s concept of immanence and transcendence and Finklea?s themes about masculinities. The portrayal of race is investigated using McLaren?s critical multiculturalism. The study uses the descriptive analytical interpretative method. The data analyzed are the characters, dialogue, and plot. The result shows that men and women are portrayed as equal but the stereotypes are still visible. Men are portrayed not only brave but also confident. Males? romantic interest is manifested in heterosexual desire and male bosses are driven by profit. Women can be successful in racing if she dares to intervene the bureaucracy or is given opportunity by men. Different accent of English is seen as less capable and white characters are not always portrayed unproblematic.

Abstract

Refugees’ perilous experiences force them to flee home for safety. Their arrival from home country to the host country is not only often reduced to be a statistical number in factual reports but also seen as threats to national well-being. The study aims to provide the argument that poems provide a symbol of resistance towards refugees’ given fate, and offer a platform for them to create their authentic version of knowledge. Poems are chosen to be analyzed in this study as they can mediate the refugees’ unique experiences and their struggle to cope with the changing condition. The study argues that poems of and by refugees can serve as strategic means of preserving memories that connect them with their past, which shape their present and construct an alternative subjectivity against objectification and stereotypes pinned to them. Poems analyzed in this research are ‘Home’ by Warsan Shire, ‘The Icebreaker’ by Yovanka Paquete Perdigao, and ‘Empathy’ by A.E. Stallings. Those excerpts are interpreted through Feminist Refugee Epistemology (FRE), which according to Espiritu (2018), “reveals the hidden political forces within the site of intimate domestic interaction in each refugee’s unique experiences and queer sociality.” The study concluded that poems of and by refugees could facilitate the forced-migrants’ aspiration and create alternative knowledge as opposed to their common objectification in mass-media reports.

Abstract

Pendidikan lingkungan pada anak melalui penulisan karya sastra di Rumah Belajar dan Rumah Bermain Untukmu Si Kecil (RB-USK) bertujuan meningkatkan kesadaran lingkungan dan literasi di kalangan anak-anak. Program ini dimotivasi oleh masalah penggunaan gadget berlebihan yang menghambat perkembangan literasi dan kesadaran lingkungan. Melalui pendampingan dan pelatihan penulisan karya sastra bertema lingkungan, anak-anak didorong untuk menciptakan karya sastra yang orisinal. Kegiatan ini melibatkan penguatan manajemen organisasi RB-USK untuk memastikan kelangsungan program. Materi lingkungan membantu anak-anak mengembangkan keterampilan kritis seperti pemecahan masalah, analisis, dan pengambilan keputusan. Anak-anak akan belajar untuk mengevaluasi informasi dan membuat pilihan yang baik untuk lingkungan. Hasil yang diharapkan adalah peningkatan kemampuan literasi, kesadaran lingkungan, dan pengembangan karakter anak-anak dalam menghadapi tantangan global.

Abstract

Toward the end of 2023, there was a massive discussion about how a group of students from varied universities in Aceh, Indonesia, forced out Rohingya refugees from their shelter. Based on this event, there was global and local news coverage about this which reflects how power dynamics are at play. The dissection of the news pieces is done following van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis. The findings hint at how the interwoven world of journalistic reports can act as the voice that challenge the multi-layered injustice and perpetual othering experienced by Rohingya refugees. We discuss and present how news pieces are produced and how the discourse about the intersectional marginalization of refugees intensifies and provokes action towards the perpetuation of injustices.

Abstract

Penguatan nilai-nilai kesetaraan gender sejak dini merupakan langkah penting dalam membentuk generasi yang adil dan inklusif. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan nilai edukatif berbasis gender melalui teknik sosiodrama pada anak-anak usia 7–14 tahun di Komunitas Literasi Untukmu Si Kecil (RB-USK), Kelurahan Sumbersari, Kabupaten Jember. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan ini adalah pendekatan partisipatif dengan model edukasi interaktif yang terdiri atas: (1) diskusi awal bersama pengurus komunitas untuk pemetaan karakter peserta; dan (2) pelaksanaan sosialisasi dan edukasi tentang peran gender, perbedaan jenis kelamin dan gender, serta pengenalan profesi tanpa batasan gender. Materi disampaikan melalui narasi sederhana, visual edukatif, dan dialog terbuka yang dilanjutkan dengan latihan sosiodrama sebagai bentuk penguatan nilai. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan adanya respons positif dari anak-anak terhadap konsep peran gender yang fleksibel, ditandai dengan keberanian mereka dalam menyebutkan cita-cita tanpa hambatan stereotip. Anak laki-laki dan perempuan mulai menunjukkan pemahaman bahwa pekerjaan rumah, pilihan profesi, dan hobi bukanlah hak eksklusif berdasarkan jenis kelamin. Kegiatan ini juga memperkuat kapasitas pengurus komunitas dalam mengintegrasikan pendekatan literasi berbasis gender. Disarankan agar kegiatan lanjutan dilakukan secara berkesinambungan melalui pelatihan kreatif, pementasan, dan pembuatan media belajar yang ramah anak.
