Abstract

Research on art creation entitled Suara Hati Dance Collaboration involving dancers (students) and children with visual impairments (disabilities) to answer concerns about how a dancer feels dancing in the dark. This research method is a collaboration between the potential of dancers and the artistic potential of blind children. The dancers’ explorations were inspired by the behavior of the character Gendari in the  Mahabarata story, who closed his eyes all his life only to feel the same darkness as his husband, Destrarastra. Exploring the potential of blind children is an important part of this research to determine the process and form of work. The results of this study provide an artistic experience for dancers, moving in the dark just following their auditory instincts. Providing space for expression and artistic experience for blind children, fostering self-confidence, courage, and a sense of pride in being able to work with dancers and appear in performances that are shown publicly. Keywords: voice, heart, collaboration, visual impairment, Gendari, movement, darkness.

Abstract

This article examines performing arts technology in the form of a musical vibration delivery device called Budmergo for deaf people. This activity optimizes the work of the Budmergo tool as an expression tool in the context of intermedia performance art activities. As a result, it hopes to involve deaf people in art performances according to their characteristics and realize a creative space for art that favors their unique abilities and needs. This activity is based on the mindset that each individual can absorb and internalize the phenomena around them through different means and media while also expressing them independently in art. The general objective of this activity is to conduct an art technology study of the Budmergo tool to (1) find knowledge, methods, and art media that can optimize the art activities of deaf people, (2) evaluate the technology of the Budmergo tool (3) socio-psychologically be able to raise the dignity of deaf people, considering that the participatory art creation model is full of human values with participant involvement,  and (4) get recommendations for the development of unique art performance technology for deaf people.

Abstract

Persons with disabilities, especially those with hearing impairments, often face significant challenges in accessing and enjoying traditional wayang kulit performances. This community service program seeks to address this issue by introducing innovations in the form of specially designed wayang puppets and the integration of speech balloons (balon kata) to make performances more accessible and engaging for deaf audiences. The aim of this initiative is to empower individuals with hearing disabilities through puppetry arts by creating visually intuitive puppets and providing visual dialogue aids that support their understanding of the narrative and character interactions. The method employed involves a structured design facilitation process that includes problem identification, idea formulation, experimentation, selection, implementation, and presentation. The involvement of community partners such as Padepokan Seni Sarotama is a key component of the program's success. The results show that the use of speech balloons in conjunction with puppet design has significantly improved the level of appreciation, comprehension, and engagement of deaf participants during wayang performances. Participants expressed a stronger emotional connection to the performance and reported increased confidence and self-esteem. This program demonstrates that artistic innovation in traditional puppetry can serve as an effective medium for inclusion and empowerment of individuals with special needs. Additionally, the project contributes to the preservation and revitalization of wayang culture among younger generations, including those with disabilities.
