Abstract

Teaching communication theory in Indonesia and another non-Western countries generally deals with two challenges, namely Western perspective biases and negative perception of students who used to look at the course as complicated and boring. The paper offers teaching strategy for the communication theory course emphasizing contextualization as the core learning message, culturally responsive as the teaching approach, and student centred as the learning method. Students learn to relate the learning process with their everyday experience, so that they could develop meaning or function of the learning process. It would increase students’ motivation, involvement, and achievement. It would also be an important point to contextualize communication theory with empirical context, as contextualization is an important process of de-westernization of communication theories. Thus, the communication theory teaching is an initial step to de-westernize communication theory, which has a simple role: to criticize the relevance of established communication theories with local context.

Abstract

The Indonesian National Badminton team is one of the most successful national teams in international competition. Such success has brought a significant contribution to Indonesian national pride. However, in terms of popularity, this sport is less popular when compared to football. Consequently, there are only a few Indonesian sports media that specializes in reporting and discussing badminton. This study aims to determine the newsroom management of badminton media in Indonesia, in particular Majalah Bulutangkis and bulutangkis.com. Newsroom management is an important element in mass media. This study uses the qualitative method, with interviews as data collecting techniques. The informants are editors-in-chief from bulutangkis.com and Majalah Bulutangkis. In general, the results of the study show that both media regularly cover badminton tournaments participated by Indonesian badminton players. News related to events outside the field is also presented, including the side story related to badminton to keep the readers from being bored. From an organizational perspective, both media are experiencing a lack quantity of journalists, so they use freelance contributors or recruit volunteers. In practice, both media use websites as a platform to provide information and the Readers Forum to build interaction with their readers as well as invite readers to submit articles. This condition causes both media to be less active in maintaining their social media accounts. The evaluation stage is carried out by looking at the accuracy of the information and the use of language.

The quality of news on sub-district websites in the administrative environment of the Yogyakarta City government is still not good in terms of updating information, selecting news themes and news presentation techniques. Abstract

Soft White Underbelly is a YouTube channel that produces content of interviews with marginalized people in America. It uncovers stories of stigmatized people and reveals the systemic inequality behind their presence. Gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the issues addressed on this channel. It portrays how prostitutes are victims of GBV. The author applied Stuart Hall’s audience reception theory. The theory proposes that media messages are not static. Hall suggested that expectations and prior knowledge influence their text interpretation. This research investigates how young audiences perceive portrayals of GBV victims in Soft White Underbelly's videos on prostitution and explores the factors that influence these perceptions. A qualitative method was adopted, employing audience reception analysis as the approach. Informants were international YouTube users between the ages of 18 and 30. The study finds various receptions, influenced by social factors, media habits, educational levels, personal experiences, and economic factors. Furthermore, this research confirms that Hall's reception theory is evident in today's audience reception. The findings demonstrate how viewers can develop critical awareness, interpret media texts, and disseminate them back into their social environment.
