Abstract

Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries. Tourism is able to move the economy forward at the micro-level such as encouraging the informal sector and local potential while at the macro level it can increase currency transactions. In various countries, the tourism sector is able to increase domestic and foreign demands as well as to encourage transportation, hospitality, and manufacturing industries. This study examines the effect of institutional indicators on tourism in ASEAN countries during 2000-2018 under dynamic panel estimation. The number of observations was about 180, namely: time series from 2000-2018 and cross-section of 10 countries. ASEAN as one of the destinations in the world requires an increase in institutional quality to be able to compete and provide world-class tourism services. The six institutional indicators were employed such as voice and accountability, political stability and absence of violence, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption. Moreover, the dynamic panel estimation was expressed by Pooled OLS and REM estimations. Interestingly, the findings show that political stability compromises the number of tourist arrivals while government effectiveness can stimulate tourist arrivals. Similarly, GDP per capita can hinder the number of tourist arrivals, while the exchange rate leads increasing of tourism arrivals. Thus, the governments in ASEAN countries can promote and cooperate together to develop tourism in the regional level. The GDP per capita of ASEAN countries should be increased, and the level of exchange rate can be maintained at a stable range. Besides, the governments should also improve the quality of institutions.

Abstract

Investment becomes an important variable to achieve economic growth, especially in a developing country such as Indonesia. Investment is a tool for economic growth and recovery through capital stimulus for the production process that will be impactful on increasing household consumption. Investment can contribute to job creation, poverty reduction, and living standard improvement. Enhancement of domestic investment is needed to improve the development. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of gross regional domestic product (GRDP), government spending, and years of schooling on the realization of domestic investment in 33 provinces in Indonesia from 2016 to 2020. The realization of domestic investment in Indonesia showed a positive trend that described a good indicator of investment growth in provincial level. Data estimation employed with first difference panel generalized method of moments. From the test results, the GRDP parameter is significantly positive towards domestic investment. Years of schooling is proven to have negative impacts on the realization of domestic investment. GRDP(-1) and government spending are proven to be not significant. The instrument validity test employing the Sargan test shows that the research model is valid. Through the Arellano-Bond Serial Correlation test, it is known that there is no serial correlation so that the model has good consistency. Therefore, investment policy stability is necessary to encourage the productivity of the productive sectors at the provincial level. Synergy between the central government and provincial government is needed to allocate the realization of domestic investment efficiently for the potential sectors. Keywords: domestic investment, gross regional domestic product, GMM panelAbstrakInvestasi merupakan variabel penting untuk mencapai pertumbuhan ekonomi, khususnya di negara sedang berkembang seperti Indonesia. Estimasi data menggunakan first difference panel generalized method of moments.

Abstract

Exports directly impact national income, which will also have implications for increasing levels of productivity, innovation, and technology transfer. The urgency of exports from an open economic perspective is to increase the capacity for economic growth. Unfortunately, various factors often hinder export performance, disrupting the potential benefits. The main objective of this study is to analyze the impact of macroeconomic variables, namely the exchange rate, foreign direct investment (FDI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, and inflation on Indonesian exports in the period 1970-2022. This research uses time series data with the Autoregressive Distributed Lag-Error Correction Model (ARDL-ECM) method. The findings of the analysis show that the exchange rate, FDI, GDP per capita, and inflation have a positive and significant effect on exports in the long term. Therefore, if the Indonesian government wants to maintain its trade balance, it is recommended to keep a floating and controlled exchange rate policy and coordinate pro-export-oriented investment policies.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate regional potential and develop strategies based on creative economy activities, both in the creative industries sector and the service sector in Wonogiri Regency. The analytical model used is qualitative method with triangulation approaches that interview from the perspectives of government, business actors, and the community. The results of the study show that five creative industry groups can represent the creative economy in Wonogiri Regency, two of which are the fashion industry (batik) and traditional food (raw cashews, soybeans, and cassava). Another sub-sector supporting the creative economy in Wonogiri Regency is tourism potential. The novelty of this research is the use of a comprehensive triangulation approach to identify creative economy sectors with untapped potential and to produce a mapping of the creative economy ecosystem specific to the characteristics of Wonogiri Regency. Currently, Wonogiri Regency has not issued legislation as a reference for creative economy development. The potential of natural resources, diversity of arts and culture, innovative and creative resources in the form of characteristics from the perspective of the creative economy, as well as infrastructure and facilities are needed to empower these potential resources. The contribution of this research is evidence-based concrete recommendations for immediately forming a Creative Economy Development Coordination Team along with infrastructure, facilities, and funding support to implement creative economy development in Wonogiri Regency.

Abstract

Poverty in Indonesia has decreased but still presents many challenges in achieving significant reduction targets. The main objective of this study is to estimate the effect of financial sector development on poverty in Indonesia. The dependent variable was household final consumption expenditure as a proxy for poverty, while the independent variables were broad money and gross savings. The study used time series data and applied the ARDL-ECM (Autoregressive Distributed Lag–Error Correction Model) method for 1981–2022. The main finding was that broad money did not significantly affect poverty reduction. Gross savings were significant with a negative coefficient; higher savings were associated with higher poverty rates due to decreased consumption. Furthermore, the stability of the research model was tested using normality, serial correlation, heteroscedasticity, cumulative sum (CUSUM), and cumulative sum of squares (CUSUMQ) tests. The financial sector can reduce poverty through efficient financial services for the poor, microeconomic empowerment, and increased financial inclusion. In the future, the government must promote a conducive and competitive financial sector to support poverty alleviation programs

Abstract

Debt is an intriguing state financing to be studied and analyzed because debt can have positive or negative impacts. Sources of debt can be from the issuance of domestically-sold bonds or foreign investment. Indonesia uses debt instruments to address the fiscal gap and increase capital for economic development. This study aims to analyze the impact of debt on Indonesia's economic growth and investment during the 1970-2018 period, using the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method. The study found that debt had a negative effect on GDP in the short and long run. Meanwhile, it did not affect investment in the short run but had a negative effect in the long run. The study model also had good stability as a result of Cusum and Cusum of Squares testing. Thus, appropriate debt management policies are needed to support economic growth.

Abstract

The necessity for a reevaluation of international trade has become increasingly apparent, particularly in Islamic countries. This study aims to estimate the economic development of selected Islamic countries, namely Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Brunei Darussalam, and Kuwait, in terms of export performance. This study was conducted within the broader context of Islamic countries, with a specific focus on analyzing dynamic panel data from 2010 to 2019. The dependent variable included exports of goods and services, while the regressors included GDP growth, broad money, and inflation. An estimation based on the panel generalized method of moments revealed a significant effect of export (-1) on export, a significant and negative impact of broad money on export, and a significant and positive effect on inflation. In contrast, GDP growth was not found to be significant. These findings are consistent with the high number of global Muslim consumers and the growth of Islamic finance assets. Currently, Islamic countries are prioritizing product diversification for both the Muslim and global markets. These findings indicate the need for increased economic development to achieve the practical implications of sustainable economic growth in Islamic economies.
