Data were analysed using descriptive qualitative methods. Data were obtained from speaking tests administered to students in group in front of the class. The types of code-switching, namely Tag-switching, Inter-sentential, and Intra-sentential, were analysed based on Appel and Muysken theory. As a result, students frequently used Intra-sentential type of code-switching at a rate of 72%, Inter-sentential at a rate of 40,4%, and finally used Tag-switching at a rate of 0%. Types of code-mixing, namely Insertion, Alternation and Congruent Lexicalization, were analysed based on Muysken theory. The results showed that 70,2% of the students frequently used the Insertion type of code-mixing, while the rate of the Alternation was 21,2%, and the rate of Congruent Lexicalization was 0%. Above all, the results showed the students used code-switching more frequently during the conversation test with total 112,4%, while the code-mixing showed the total 91,4%.

Abstract

Listening skills are an important aspect of English language learning that supports students' communication skills. However, students often face difficulties in understanding pronunciation, vocabulary, intonation, and conversational context, especially when listening to native speakers. This study aims to identify the main weaknesses in students' listening skills and understand their perceptions of the challenges they face. This study used a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods involving 45 students of the English Education Study Program at STKIP Budidaya Binjai who were selected through purposive sampling. Data was collected through questionnaires to measure students' perceptions of their listening skills, as well as to explore the experiences and obstacles they face during the listening process. The results of this study are expected to provide insight into the main challenges experienced by students, as well as the basis for developing more effective and engaging learning media, such as the integration of podcast videos or other interactive methods, to improve students' listening skills in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Art, especially painting, plays an important role in children's development, especially in fostering creativity, fine motor skills, and emotional growth. This study aims to explore the impact of finger painting activities on the creativity and interest of elementary school students, particularly students in grades 1 to 3. The study used qualitative methods, including observations, interviews, and practical activities with 25 students. Findings showed that the majority of students (17 out of 25) showed high interest in painting activities, associating it as a fun and self-expressive activity. On the other hand, some students (8 out of 25) showed low interest in painting, perceiving it as a dirty or boring activity. This research highlights the significant benefits of painting, including improved hand-eye coordination, increased patience, and enhanced emotional expression. In addition, the study also emphasized the challenges faced by teachers and students, such as limited time and resources in the school curriculum. The study concluded that finger painting plays an important role in developing children's creativity, emotional skills and social interaction. In addition, the study also underscores the importance of teacher and parental support in providing the necessary facilities, time and motivation for students to explore their artistic potential to the fullest.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Project Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing numeracy skills among students at SDN 028227 Binjai Selatan Strucktre. The research employs a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, which includes planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting through three distinct cycles. Each cycle involved a series of projects designed to engage students actively in their learning process. Results indicate a significant improvement in students' numeracy skills, with completion rates rising from 40% in the first cycle to an impressive 79% in the third cycle. The qualitative data collected through observations and student feedback further support these findings, highlighting increased student engagement and motivation towards mathematics. Additionally, students reported a greater understanding of mathematical concepts as they applied their knowledge to real-world problems through project work. This demonstrates that PjBL can effectively foster a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and improve overall learning outcomes. The study concludes that implementing PjBL not only enhances numeracy skills but also promotes critical thinking and collaboration among students, making it a valuable pedagogical approach for educators aiming to improve mathematics education in elementary schools.
