Abstract

Indonesia is an agricultural country where the majority of the population lives from cultivating land, both in rather sophisticated and simple ways, and making a living from the produce of the earth. The picture can be said to be correct for, at least, until the last decade before entering the millennium era. If you look at Indonesia's macroeconomic statistics from 1961 to 2011, it will be seen a decrease in the presentation of the population working in the agricultural sector. Along with that, the number of people working in the industrial (manufacturing) sector is increasing. Significant improvement is most clearly seen in the service sector. So that in 2011 the number beat the population of Indonesia who worked in the agricultural sector. If the change in agrarian society is seen as a popular change for Indonesians - in the sense that the change is experienced by many people, occurs in a broad spatial scope and with a significant impact - the question is, how will the change in an agrarian society be captured and interpreted in the mind by artists and especially musicians who, I think, have a role as recorders of the age? To answer that question, the writer selected a number of popular Indonesian songs from the 1950s to the 1980s with poems containing pieces of agrarian change.

Abstract

This paper examines how a particular cultural product (cuisine) from a demographically minority ethnic group is transformed in a multicultural social setting. The expanding process of commodification and the development of the urban culinary industry, supported by innovations in digital technology and media, provide opportunities for ethnic cuisines to compete with other culinary traditions. This research aims to determine how the cultural identity embedded in specific cuisines is built in the culinary market and how the intrinsic value of ethnic culinary traditions is transformed in multiethnic societies. The theory used is food culture and food habits. (Foster and Anderson 1978; Jerome, Kandel, and Pelto 1980). This study used qualitative research methods with an ethnographic approach.  Data was collected through interviews, observations, and the author's participant observation as a citizen of the city under study. The study found that togetherness is an intrinsic value of Lampung's seruit commensality that is adaptive amidst socio-cultural transformation into a multicultural society. Seruit becomes an arena for constructing Lampungnese during a multiethnic urban society and growing commercial economy. Sharing meals (seruit commensality) can promote harmony among Lampung's urban ethnic groups. Mass and digital media have transformed Lampung's identity

Abstract

The Reformation era in Indonesia has resulted in changes in local politics, particularly in relation to ethnic-based groups or adat politics. However, previous studies that have focused on the rise of adat or tradition in local politics have paid limited attention to the dynamics of cultural expression and representation. This article aims to shed light on the reconstruction of ethnic identity among the Belunguh people in Lampung within multiethnic society. To achieve this, an ethnographic inquiry was conducted with the Belunguh people of the Lampung Sai Batin sub-ethnic group, specifically exploring their marriage patterns and rituals. The data collection methods consisted of interview, focus group discussions (FGD), and observation involving twelve informants from traditional leaders (penyimbang adat). The findings of the study highlight the significance of marriage systems and rituals in the construction of Belunguh ethnic identity. While intra-ethnic relations are shaped by marriage practices and rituals of semanda and metudau, the practice of tekhang emerges to facilitate inter-ethnic marriages, particularly with the Javanese. The Belunguh people strive to enhance their awareness of identity by modifying marriage rituals, which reflect their social status, hierarchy, and cultural adaptation in a multiethnic society.
