Abstract

The "Melati" Joint Business Group is a group of women's skills including the "Meronce" craftsmanship whose members consist of women in Dolok Merawan Village, Dolok Merawan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra Province. The results of the 2018 community service program for this business group have shown quite encouraging results, in which this joint business group has been able to increase its organizational capacity and be able to improve its "meronce" handicraft skills by producing products of economic value. However, the "Melati" Joint Business Group is experiencing difficulties in marketing its handicraft products, because so far the method of selling products is still conventional, and they have not been able to market their products online. This community service activity aims to train the "Melati" Joint Business Group in relation to the online marketing strategy of the "Meronce" handicraft products. To achieve these objectives, the service methods used are lecture and discussion techniques, training on the promotion of handicraft products online by providing promotional tools, namely smartphones and equipment, and strengthening group organizations with on-line marketing strategy training. The results of the service activities show that KUBE Melati members already have the ability to market their craft products online such as Facebook and WhatsApp, and there are even consumers who order online. This is enough to motivate them so that they do not feel left behind by the progress of Information Technology in marketing their handicrafts. But they still hope that the service team can provide assistance for them in accordance with the progress of the Information Technology

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Objective: this research examines the intricate processes contributing to educational development inequity among girls from impoverished female-headed households (pekka) in Pakpak communities at Pegagan Julu VIII Village, North Sumatra. The study explores the interplay between cultural traditions, socioeconomic constraints, and gender ideology that restricts girls' educational opportunities despite Indonesia's commitment to gender equality in educational development frameworks. Method: the investigation employed qualitative feminist methodology, gathering comprehensive life stories from seven Pakpak girls (ages 15-20) who experienced educational discontinuation. Data collection involved in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and focus group discussions with participants and their families, conducted over nine months of ethnographic fieldwork. Results: the analysis revealed that educational development inequity stems from two interlocking systems: patriarchal cultural structures and extreme poverty conditions. These systems create a "patriarchy-poverty nexus" that produces double marginalization of girls—first by systematically restricting their access to higher education in favor of male siblings, and second by imposing additional economic burdens wherein girls must abandon education to financially support their brothers' schooling. Significantly, mothers in these households often serve as unwitting agents reproducing patriarchal values despite their own marginalized position as household heads. Novelty: this study contributes uniquely to educational development discourse by identifying specific mechanisms through which traditional values intersect with economic hardship to create gender-based educational disparities in indigenous communities. Unlike previous research focusing solely on economic barriers, our findings illuminate how cultural interpretations of gender responsibility result in female educational sacrifice becoming normalized as familial duty, providing new insights for addressing educational inequity in traditional communities undergoing uneven development processes.

Abstract

Women’s involvement has been essential in supporting household food security and zero hunger sustainable development. Within families, women often play a crucial role in ensuring that all members receive safe and nutritious food. The Aisyiyah Women Farmers Group (Kelompok Wanita Tani, KWT) in Sei Rotan Village empowered women to engage in small-scale agriculture by utilizing their household yards. This community empowerment program aimed to improve the knowledge, skills, and independence of KWT members in optimizing yard spaces to strengthen women’s roles in achieving food security and promoting household food self-sufficiency. The program primarily targeted housewives who were active members of the KWT Aisyiyah. It was implemented through a combination of counseling, training, and mentoring using the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method. PRA facilitated the active participation of community members, enabling women to take on more prominent roles within both their families and the broader community. The program’s success was evaluated based on how effectively participants utilized their yards for agricultural purposes to meet their families’ nutritional needs. The crops grown by KWT members significantly reduced reliance on external sources of vegetables and contributed to sustaining healthy dietary practices within their households.
