Abstract

The increasing elderly population and the prevalence of degenerative diseases with residual symptoms require promotive efforts to maintain physical and mental health. Therapeutic Group Therapy (TGT) is considered effective in improving elderly self-integrity, but its scientific application is still limited. This community service project employed a quasi-experimental one-group posttest-only design involving 15 healthy elderly participants in Cawang Subdistrict, East Jakarta. The TGT intervention consisted of two sessions addressing adaptation to biological, sexual, and cognitive changes. Data on self-integrity achievement were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed descriptively. All participants achieved maximum self-integrity scores (>6) after the intervention. The elderly reported increased enthusiasm for life, improved self-confidence, reduced anxiety, and greater social engagement. These findings indicate that TGT is effective as a community-based intervention to enhance psychological and social well-being in the elderly, consistent with previous research. TGT is recommended as a routine intervention model in community elderly health programs to improve quality of life and prevent psychological problems.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the application and effectiveness of cognitive therapy in reducing signs and symptoms of helplessness in cancer patients. The method used is a case series study design. The results showed that patients had an average of 25.4 signs of helplessness. After initial intervention, cognitive therapy significantly reduced the number of symptoms further to an average of 8.1, with an average total reduction of 17.3 symptoms per patient. The greatest reduction was seen in the cognitive domain (e.g., reduced doubts and negative thoughts) and affective domains (e.g., reduced anxiety and depressed mood). In conclusion, the application of cognitive therapy as a specialist mental health care intervention was significantly effective in reducing signs and symptoms of helplessness in cancer patients. This intervention successfully improved patients' ability to manage negative thoughts, which had a positive impact on their affective, behavioral, and social conditions. Cognitive therapy empowers patients with adaptive coping skills, helps them rebuild a sense of control, and has the potential to improve quality of life during the challenges of cancer treatment.   Keywords: Cancer, Helplessness, Cognitive Therapy

Abstract

burden of mental health disorders and HIV-related stigma, which critically hinders adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has emerged as a promising evidence-based psychological intervention. However, its effectiveness across diverse populations and delivery formats in LMICs has not been adequately synthesized. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of CBT on mental health and stigma reduction among PLWH in LMICs.  A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines for RCT articles published in Scopus, Science Direct, and PubMed databases between January 1, 2021, to April 9, 2026. The keywords used were “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” AND “Mental Health OR Stigma” AND “People Living with HIV” OR “Randomized Controlled Trial.” Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool version 2 (RoB 2). Seven RCTs involving 1.786 participants from six LMICs in Africa and one in South Asia were included. All studies consistently reported clinically significant reductions in depressive symptoms and internalized stigma following CBT interventions, regardless of group, individual, or self-administered delivery format, and regardless of whether the intervention was delivered by a mental health specialist or a trained non-specialist. The risk of bias assessment indicated that one study had a low risk of bias, and six studies had some concerns. CBT is an effective, flexible, and scalable intervention for improving mental health and reducing stigma among PLWH in LMICs.
