Abstract

Introduction: The increasing overuse of smartphones among children is a troubling addiction that affects both their physical well-being and mental health. It can lead to mood swings, withdrawal symptoms, emotional discomfort, and increased anxiety in social situations. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between smartphone addiction and anxiety levels among students at Pawyatan Daha Elementary School in Kediri, East Java. Methods: This study utilized a cross-sectional design with a simple random sampling method involving 154 students from Pawyatan Daha Elementary School in Kediri, East Java. Data collection occurred from November to December 2022. The independent variable in this research was smartphone addiction, assessed using the Smartphone Addiction Risk Children Questionnaire (SARCQ). In contrast, the dependent variable was anxiety, measured by the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS). Data analysis was conducted using Spearman's rho test with a significance level of α = 0.05. Result: The findings indicated that a majority of respondents (77.3%) fell into the high category of smartphone addiction, while 52.6% were identified as experiencing general anxiety disorders. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation, with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.005) and an R-value of 0.330. Conclusions: The study concludes that there is a correlation between smartphone addiction and anxiety among school-aged children. Parents must supervise their children's smartphone usage to foster character development and prevent addictive behaviors. Additionally, nurses can play a crucial role as counselors by providing regular counseling services in elementary schools to mitigate smartphone addiction.

Abstract

Adolescence is an important period for developing social and emotional habits that are important for mental well-being. This research aimed to know the effectiveness of intervention programs to improve emotional regulation in adolescents with mental disorders. Preparation using the PICO approach, determination of inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a literature review of scientific English articles published between 2016 and 2023 were conducted. Data were obtained from the SCOPUS, Science Direct, SpringerLink, ProQuest, and SAGE databases. Assessment of the title, abstract, and full text of the article with the keywords "Adolescent," "Child," "Teenager," "Emotion regulation," "Emotion exposure," "Intervention," "Mental Disorders," "Randomised Control Trial." The systematic review report was reviewed critically to ensure that all PRISMA steps and items were included. Nine articles met the inclusion criteria. The choice of programs and methods of intervention may vary depending on the specific mental disorders and individual needs of adolescents. Nursing interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based interventions, group therapy, support groups, and school-based programs, are widely used to manage and treat mental health disorders with the aim of improving well-being and recovery. The effectiveness of intervention programs varies, and selection should consider adolescent needs, resources, and cultural contexts. Consulting mental health professionals or organizations is recommended.

Abstract

Recovery and quality of life for people with schizophrenia (PWS) are persisting challenges in mental health services. Therefore, this research aims to investigate factors contributing significantly to PWS recovery for quality-of-life enhancement. A comprehensive search across six databases, including Scopus, ScienceDirect, ProQuest, SpringerLink, Web of Science, and CINAHL generated 196, 122, 134, 79, 51, and 113 articles, respectively, for screening. These 695 articles focused on patients diagnosed with schizophrenia in recovery, as well as comprised journal publications from 2019 to 2023 and quantitative or qualitative research published in English. A total of 22 articles that met the inclusion criteria were subject to a review process. The results showed that PWS recovery was influenced by coping strategies, illness severity, treatment compliance, hope, spirituality, social support, and partnerships, while self-stigma hindered recovery and quality of life. However, spirituality was found to significantly foster hope, self-confidence, self-control, and meaning for PWS. Health profesional played an important role in the recovery process through the establishment of partnerships, provision of coping skills, and empowerment of patients.

Abstract

Bullying, including cyberbullying, has a devastating impact on mental health, particularly among adolescents. This literature study aims to identify mental health issues caused by bullying and cyberbullying. A systematic review was conducted in the last five years using the keywords "bullying, cyberbullying, mental health, adolescent" and the population, intervention, comparison, outcome, study design (PICOS) framework within Scopus (29 articles), ProQuest (187 articles), Science Direct (193 articles), and SAGE (58 articles) published databases in the last five years using the keywords of “bullying, cyberbullying, mental health, adolescent”. The selected articles are those applying quantitative and longitudinal studies published in 2018-2022 in which study participants were adolescents who had experiences as victims of bullying and cyberbullying. The 25 articles met the inclusion criteria for review. Based on the results of the review of the article, it was found that mental health problems can occur in all roles in bullying and cyberbullying, but the highest is in the role of victim. Mental health problems that occur in victims include anxiety, stress, depression, low self-esteem, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts. Based on these results, different interventions are needed for the roles involved in bullying and cyberbullying, especially for victims, because psychological problems are more common in victims.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the impact of an educational intervention centered on fostering a caring-based character on the practical nursing competency related to ethics, law, and cultural sensitivity. The research employed a quasi-experimental approach with a pre-post design, incorporating a control group. Purposive sampling was used to select 33 respondents for both the intervention and control groups (n=66). The competency measurement instrument was validated and deemed reliable. The intervention, carried out over 12 weeks, utilized a module. Data analysis involved the Wilcoxon match pairs test and Mann-Whitney U-test. The intervention group exhibited a significant improvement in practical nursing competency concerning ethics, law, and cultural sensitivity before and after the caring-based character learning intervention (p<0.001), whereas the control group showed no notable difference (p=0.065). Significant competency differences were observed between the intervention and control groups (p=0.023). The implementation of a caring-based character learning module has the potential to enhance nursing students' competency, particularly in practical aspects related to ethics, law, and cultural sensitivity. It is suggested that nursing education incorporates character learning modules into the curriculum, training programs, or extracurricular activities.

Abstract

Indonesia has the second-highest number of tuberculosis (TB) cases in the world. Many TB patients did not take their medicine at health care centers causing an increase in taking medication. This study aimed to develop a simple model for describing non-adherence to medication in TB patients. This study used an analytical with a cross-sectional approach. The following criteria were used in selecting the respondent: adolescent, able to read and write, and willingness to be a respondent. A total of 93 participants were recruited randomly. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using logistic regression. The predisposing factors were knowledge, attitude, belief (p = 0.000), trust (p = 0.013), and values (p = 0.001). Family support (p = 0.034) and healthcare personnel support (p = 0.022) were reinforcing factors. The enabling factor was the healthcare facility (p = 0.000). This study found that the most dominant factor is knowledge (B = 56.4). The model was Logit (Pi) = 22.363 + 56.4 knowledge (1) + 22.56 belief (1) + 2.9 family support (1) + 0.577 healthcare support (1) + 0.061 healthcare facility (1). This study suggests that TB patients’ knowledge must be increased to improve their TB treatment and management.
