Abstract

Introduction: Salivary pH, viscosity and volume play an important role in maintaining tooth and oral tissue integrity. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the difference of young adult smokers and non-smokers saliva reviewed by its pH, viscosity and volume. Methods: The research sample of 28 smokers and 24 non-smokers. Saliva was collected by spitting method then the pH, viscosity and volume was measured. The data was analyze using independent sample t-test and chi-square. Results: The result indicated that there was a significant difference in the mean value of salivary pH on smokers and non-smokers with p-value 0.000 (p < 0.05). There was a significant difference in the mean value of salivary viscosity on smokers and non-smokers with p-value 0.000 (p < 0.05.) There was a significant difference in the mean value of salivary volume on smokers and non-smokers with p-value 0.000 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The conclusion of the research showed that salivary pH of smokers was lower than non-smokers, salivary viscosity of smokers was higher than non-smokers and salivary volume of smokers was fewer than non-smokers.Keywords: Young adult, smokers, non-smokers, saliva, salivary pH, salivary viscosity, salivary volume

Abstract

Introduction: The physiologic of speech is a complex thing involving organ respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation and neurologic integration. The use of removable orthodontic appliance may cause speech articulation disorder and may affect patient’s speech function. The purpose of this research was to obtain an illustration of speech articulation disorder in patient using removable orthodontic appliance. Methods: This research was a descriptive research using the one group pretest posttest design. Speech articulation disorder was determined by testing the labiodental, linguoalveolar and linguopalatal consonants using the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation test equipment. Results: Research result indicated that there was speech articulation disorder in the pronunciation of the consonants /f/; /v/; /t/; /d/; /r/; /s/; /j/; /g/; /k/ in the beginning of the word as many as 37%; 23%; 30%; 57%; 77%; 93%; 50%; 40%; 23%, in the middle of the word as many as 37%; 27%; 60%; 60%; 83%; 97%; 57%; 50%; 80% and in the end of the word as many as 17%; - ; 27%; 50%; 83%; 97%; - ; - ; 57% in the people using removable orthodontic appliance for the first time. Conclusion: Speech articulation disorders in patients with orthodontic removable appliance varies with the presentation of having most articulation disorders is in the pronunciation of consonants / s / in words.

Abstract

Introduction: Green Kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) has a lot of nutritional content, one of them is potassium. Potassium helps maintain osmotic pressure in intracellular fluid, protect body’s electrolyte balance, regulate heartbeat, maintain muscle and nerve cell function, reduce the risk of stroke and heart disesase, and decrease blood pressure. Methods: This study is an experimental research, using pair t-test measurement to analize the difference of blood pressure before and after consuming Green Kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) in early adulthod. The sample are thirty five students of Faculty of Dentistry, Padjadjaran. The number of green kiwi fruit is consume as much as 1 fruits or 150 grams. Blood pressure measured by sphygmomanometer with auscultatory-palpation method. Results: The result of this study shows the averaged blood pressure before and after consuming green kiwi fruit Is 99,543/68,438 mmHg and 97,581/66,743mmHg. Conclusion: The conclusion of the study indicates the existence of difference in blood pressure before and after consuming Green Kiwi fruit (Actinidia deliciosa) in early adulthood (p<5%).
