Abstract

This study explores the strategies employed by the Arab and Chinese ethnic groups to preserve their cultural identity within the predominantly Malay-Muslim environment of Palembang. Challenging the common assumption that minority groups are inherently powerless compared to the majority, this research reveals that both the Arab and Chinese communities possess significant influence in the socio-cultural landscape of Palembang. Employing a qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, the study examines how these communities navigate cultural assimilation pressures while maintaining distinct ethnic traditions. The findings indicate that both groups have successfully leveraged their social capital—Arabs through religion and Chinese through economic activities—to sustain their cultural identities and exert influence over the majority Malay population. Notably, this influence is reflected in the organization of significant social rituals, such as the Cap Go Meh Ritual by the Chinese and Ziarah Kubro by the Arabs. The study concludes that inter-ethnic adaptation in Palembang involves not only maintaining harmony but also contestation and negotiation among different groups. This dynamic interaction underscores the complexity of multiculturalism, where harmony is maintained through a pragmatic approach to mutual dependence. The implications of this research extend to policymakers and cultural organizations aiming to support ethnic diversity in a multicultural contex.

Abstract

The emergence of various religious movements often negatively impacts the understanding of Islam, causing diverse reactions and unrest within the community due to the intensity of their propaganda and rapid growth. However, this phenomenon does not apply to the Indonesian Islamic Propagation Institute (LDII). This religious community organization has deep historical roots in Indonesia. Although it was banned in the past, it has persisted in its mission to remain active and disseminate its message. Over time, the dynamics and evolution within LDII have enabled it to establish a significant presence in contemporary society. This paper aims to explore the essence of LDII, including its origins, primary founders, and organizational development, particularly in the city of Palembang. Additionally, this paper seeks to examine the transformation of its propagation activities, where LDII not only employs conventional methods but also integrates technology and media. This study provides a comprehensive overview of LDII's historical background, the transitions it has undergone, and its current position in society. By examining these aspects, this paper endeavors to offer accurate and objective information about LDII's history and development, contributing to a better understanding of its role and influence within Indonesian society.

Abstract

This study discusses the ideology applied by traditional Horsebow archers in South Sumatra, specifically within the Perkumpulan Pemanah Berkuda Indonesia (Perdana). The aim of this research is to understand the ideological concepts held by the traditional archery community, analyze the training processes they undergo, and investigate their influence and contributions to strengthening collective identity and enhancing the performance of its members. Using an ethnographic approach, this research reveals the significant role of the Horsebow archer ideology in fortifying local cultural roots, expanding influence, and achieving achievements at national and international levels. This traditional archery practice not only strengthens the Islamic cultural heritage but also enhances the technical skills of community members while enriching their collective identity. The dedication of the younger generation in preserving traditional practices and applying these ideological values has proven to result in achievements, build strong social bonds, and make a significant contribution to preserving religious and national values. The ideology upheld by the Horsebow archers also plays a role in strengthening national identity through sport and tradition, while celebrating cultural diversity in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the input, process, output, outcome, and contextualization of Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s concept of moral education within the framework of Indonesia’s character educatio. Data were collected from books, journals, articles, videos, and especially Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s works on moral education, using qualitative content analysis. The findings reveal that moral education consists of both software and hardware. The software includes a curriculum emphasizing morality toward Allah, the Prophet, oneself, other creatures, and the state, supported by both soft skills and hard skills activities. The hardware consists of teachers and students, with teachers expected to possess pedagogical, personal, social, and professional competencies, strengthened through prayer, dhikr, and advice. The process is carried out through structured lesson planning that integrates materials, syllabi, teaching modules, media, methods, and facilities into the lesson plan (RPP), while learning activities cover opening to closing stages with appropriate methods, assessments, and classroom management. The output and outcome of Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s moral education are students who have faith and piety to Allah, love the Prophet, show noble character toward others, and respect all creation. In its contextualization, this study highlights that Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s moral values, such as compassion, humility, sincerity, patience, justice, moderation (wasathiyah), and balance (tawazun), are strongly relevant to character education in Indonesia. These values align with key traits promoted nationally, including religiosity, honesty, discipline, creativity, tolerance, democracy, nationalism, patriotism, respect, peace, and environmental care. The study affirms that Yusuf al-Qardhawi’s ideas provide a valuable contribution to strengthening character education in Indonesia.
