Abstract

This article reviews the printers listed in the archives left by Sultan Syarif Kasim II (SSK II). SSK II has many archives that are currently stored in the palace of the Siak Sultanate. Part of the archive is handwritten, typed and printed. Types of printed manuscripts are quite interesting to discuss because there are names of printing companies. In the 19-20 centuries, the Colonial Government controlled the printing sector. They dominated the development of the print world and exercised strict supervision. The research results showed that there were seven printers in the archives of Sultan Syarif Kasim II, including Batavia Landsdrukkerij, De unie Weltevreden, Stoomsnelpersdrukkerij van H. M. Van Dorp & Co. Batavia, Typ. Courant Deli, Typ. Drukkerij Batak, Typ. Limbago Pajakoemboeh, and Typ. Varekamp & Co., Medan. The link between the Siak Sultanate and all publications and contents of documents shows that all government activities must be under supervision and permits are required in the implementation process.

Abstract

This writing deals with the relevance of daily life and traditional theatre performance, tonil. In this case, the traditional theatre performance focuses only on the existence and phenomena of Ogam in the life of Bengkalis’ people in which it is related to the people’a theatre performance. Ogam is a simple chat people utter in some conditions. The better the people chat, the more successful those people attract other attention. In certain situation, it is also found that someone doesn’t chat properly and it may cause uncomfortable chat and it may also stop the interesting chat. This ogam is signed by many coffee shops found in Bengkalis in which people usually spend their time practising ogam in those coffee shops. In traditional theatre performance, the actor or actress do not use script, so the skill in Ogam is very useful to improvise.

Abstract

This research was entitled "The Concept of Dramatic Elements in Traditional Tehater Mendu Riau ". The research focused on the dramatic elements. That’re produce the scene and the structure of the play in the show. In Teater Mendu's performing arts at Matan Theater, actors do not use text or texts as a guide to dialogue. Actors only speak of dialogue spontaneously. This is where the emergence of these aesthetic elements, which cannot be reviewed with modern dramaturgy approaches. This study uses Dramaturgy theory with a descriptive qualitative approach. The process of interviewing, observing, documenting is the way to go to find dramatic elemental concepts, Mendu Theater at the Matan Theater Riau. Abstract

This research aims to describe the meaning of the song Kurik Kundi by Suhaimi Zein. The analysis focuses on the connotative meaning and social values in the song. This research uses a qualitative approach. The data discussed are words, phrases, and clauses sourced from the Kurik Kundi song. The method used to collect data is observation and the data analysis method is the inductive method. The results of the research show the connotation meaning found in the songs. There are words and phrases indicating the relationship between words and phrases with social life and Malay culture. The social values ​​contained in the song of Kurik Kundi indicate the polite attitude of Malays towards fellow Malays and other people. Good manners in expressing the daily attitudes of Malay people. The enthusiasm in carrying out activities, and cooperation carried out by Malay people to achieve common goals in society.

Abstract

Kajian ini menitikberatkan kepada keberadaan salah satu permainan tradisional masyarakat Kota Dumai yakni Layang Kuau Raja Tebuk Isi. Permainan ini sangat populer di kalangan masyarakat Dumai, terutama oleh sanggar yang menginisiasi penamaan jenis layang Kuau Tebuk Isi yakni Sangar Layang-layang Purnama. Keberadaan yang hendak diidentifikasi meliputi fungsi dan nilai-nilai yang terdapat di dalamnya. Untuk itulah, pendekatan yang digunakan adalah foklor dan nilai budaya.

Abstract

Penelitian ini fokus pada kajian sosial budaya tentang keberadaan Sampan Leper di Desa Pekan Arba Kecamatan Batang Tuaka, Kabupaten Indragiri Hilir, Provinsi Riau. Moda transportasi tradisional ini sudah ada sejak puluhan tahun yang lalu dan masih menjadi moda transportasi di tengah perkembangan dan banyaknya pilihan moda transportasi modern. Kajian ini menelaah  keberadaan, peran serta fungsi Sampan Leper di tengah masyarakat Indragiri Hilir. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan teknik pengumpulan data analisis, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Adapun hasil dari penelitian ini menjabarkan tentang kondisi Sampan Leper, karakteristik masyarakat pengguna, fungsi sosial budaya, peran pelaku dan instansi terkait, pewarisan dan nilai sosial budaya. Sampan leper telah menjadi bagian integral dari kehidupan sehari-hari masyarakat di kawasan ini, terutama sebelum adanya pembangunan jembatan yang menghubungkan berbagai kampung. Pembangunan infrastruktur memang memberikan banyak manfaat, namun ada kekhawatiran bahwa tradisi dan kearifan lokal, seperti penggunaan sampan leper, dapat terancam punah jika tidak ada upaya yang dilakukan untuk melestarikannya.

Abstract

This study analyzes the poetry collection Bunatin by Dheni Kurnia using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach, focusing on how signs in the poems construct meaning and represent Bunatin as a symbol of Talang Mamak's cultural identity and ecology. The analysis reveals that Bunatin is not merely a female figure but also a metaphor for Bumi Talang, which has undergone exploitation and social transformation. Using the concepts of sign, object, and interpretant, this study uncovers how the diction in the poems reflects the social struggles and passive resistance of the Talang Mamak community against marginalization and environmental degradation. The use of iconic and indexical elements illustrates the close relationship between humans and nature, reinforcing Bunatin as a collective symbol of ancestral land. The study affirms poetry as a symbolic medium of resistance against environmental exploitation and cultural identity erosion.

Abstract

This article discusses the transformation of Kampar manuscript illuminations into batik motifs as an effort to preserve Malay cultural heritage. Manuscripts are written sources that contain cultural values, knowledge, and aesthetics, including illuminations that reflect local identity. The method used in this research is a qualitative descriptive method. The material sources focused on in this research are two Kampar manuscripts obtained through the British Library's Endangered Archives Programme (EAP), namely manuscripts with codes EAP1020/3/6 and EAP1020/5/1. Both manuscripts have illuminations in the form of Kaluk Paku (fern) and Pucuk Rebung (bamboo shoot) motifs, which are then transformed into batik motifs. The research results show that the Kaluk Paku motif produces a batik motif named Pakis Bersusun (Stacked Fern), symbolizing the values of friendship and mutual support. Meanwhile, the Pucuk Rebung motif produces a batik motif named Pucuk Rebung Melingkar (Circular Bamboo Shoot), depicting the spirit of unity and togetherness. It is hoped that the results of this transformation can become part of the local creative industry and enrich the cultural heritage of Kampar.
