Abstract

Self-confidence has an essensial part to start any actions, especially for speaking foreign language. This research was aimed to see the relationship among students’ self-confidence and speaking ability. The research’s instruments were questionnaire of self-confidence and speaking ability test. This research used regression and correlation analysis to find out the relationship between the variables. The results indicated that there was a significant relationship between students' self-confidence and speaking ability. It can be concluded that there was a strong relationship between the variables. Therefore, this research suggested the importance of increasing students’ self-confidence. All of these implications contribute to increasing students’ speaking ability in oral descriptive essays.

Abstract

The study reports the result of the implementation of the use of oral presentation technique to teach conversation for the English for Specific Purpose conversation class.   The aim of the research is to know whether the oral presentation technique could bring about better result of the students’ communicative competence for specific purpose. The research method applied was a qualitative case study research design.  The participants of the research were 40 students of semester 5 academic year 2024/2025 of Bina Sarana Informatika University.  The data collection was done using a semi-structured interview, documentation, and classroom observation. Next, the data was analyzed using line by line analysis. The research result shows that the use of oral presentation technique to teach conversation for Specific Purpose was quite good. Comparing to the test result of the previous semester, there is significant improvement in term of the speaking skill and final test result. Students enjoyed doing the oral presentation by taking part actively in the discussion as well as in the question-and-answer session. The researcher also found out that some teaching aspects need to be improved such as time management, language function and form, and pronunciation capability. Based on the result and discussion, it is concluded that there is a significant improvement in term of the speaking skill and final test result.

Abstract

The current research aims to investigate the progress of reading habits through Let’s Readapp and explore more the factors affected of the enhancement of reading habits. Further, the research employed a qualitative case study design with a sixth-grade student at SD Negeri Cirende 2, South Tangerang as the key informant. Then, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews and observations, then analyzed descriptively to provide clear insights. Therefore, the research indicated that several factors influenced Vida in her reading habits. For instance, it could be seen from the exposure of reading, reading interests, and the availability of book resources. Additionally, Let’s Read app possessed some substantial roles in Vida’s reading habits, including simple vocabularies for basic learners, learning grammar from the stories, eye-catching pictures, various languages, and a plenty of themes. To sum up, Let’s Read app was able to applied as the effective solution in promoting reading habits for a school-aged child.

Abstract

Speech acts are important in communication as it not only conveys information, but also perform actions and influences hearer. In spontaneous media like podcast, the natural use of language is appropriate for analyzing how intent is conveyed through utterances. The aim of this research is to determine the types of illocutionary acts utterances by Neal, to determine the types of perlocutionary acts utterances by Thom and Joey, and analyze perlocutionary effects successful, or unsuccessful after the speech acts are uttered. This research uses theory of Searle (1979) for categorizing illocutionary acts, Searle (1969) for categorizing perlocutionary acts, and Austin (1962) for identifying the effect of perlocutionary acts. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to find the result. The results show that Neal uses 5 types of illocutionary acts which are representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declaration. Meanwhile, Thom and Joey us 3 types of perlocutionary acts including verbal perlocutionary, non-verbal perlocutionary, and verbal-nonverbal perlocutionary. Moreover, the perlocutionary effect is said to be successful in line with the speaker’s intention, since out of the 10 data analyzed, there are 8 successful mostly accomplish the expected communicative purpose.
