Abstract

This research was based on a phenomenon that the students’ writing ability was still low. It was assumed that there were two main factors influencing the students’ writing. One of them was about facilitating the students with appropriate written feedbacks. In line with that, this research was a kind of descriptive study, which was aimed at finding a deep description of the implementation of written feedback at MAN Koto Baru Padang Panjang. Participants of the research were all English teachers there. Furthermore, the data were collected by using two instruments, documents and interview. There were two findings of the research. First, almost all of the written feedback items were provided to help students working on their grammatical mistakes or forms of the writing, it was proven by the percentage that 99.66% of the written feedback items were focused on forms whereas only 0.34% of the written feedback items were focused on contents. Second, the technique used in giving the written feedback was written commentary. This technique was used due to its effectiveness in helping the students’ writing. In short, giving written feedback through the written commentary technique is really worth for the development of students’ writing, especially for non-native of English.

First, almost all of the written feedback items given through the minimal marking technique were provided to help students working on their grammatical mistakes or forms of the writing, it was proven by the percentage that 99.66% of the written feedback items were focused on forms whereas only 0.34% of the written feedback items were focused on contents. Second, the written feedback technique applied by the English teachers was minimal marking technique. It is used since it is effective for teachers, particularly, in the process of giving the feedback which is time-saving. In addition, it also helps the students to be a critical writer because this technique lets the students working on the mistakes they have made.

Abstract

The TOEFL test is one of the graduation requirements at Universitas Syedza Saintika (UNSYKA), with a minimum score of 400 required for all study programs. However, some students have not yet been able to achieve this score. Preliminary research indicates that students in the Health Information Management Study Program at UNSYKA face difficulties in completing the Structure and Written Expression section of the TOEFL test. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the challenges students encounter, particularly from the material aspect. This research employs a descriptive method, with fifth-semester students from the Health Information Management Study Program in the 2021/2022 academic year as research subjects. Data were collected using two instruments: the researcher as the primary instrument and the Structure and Written Expression section of the TOEFL test. The findings revealed that 70.37% of students failed to achieve the university’s required minimum score of 400. Additionally, among the three sections of the TOEFL test, Structure and Written Expression proved to be the most challenging, with 44% of students obtaining the lowest scores in this section. Furthermore, among the eight material indicators tested, Inversion was found to be the most difficult, with a difficulty rate of 85.19%. Conjunctions ranked as the second most difficult indicator (80.22%), followed by Clauses and Phrases (64.07%). Basic Grammar Terminology was in fourth place (60.11%), followed by Expressions of Quantity (57.67%). Basic Sentence Patterns ranked sixth (57.02%). Meanwhile, Comparison had a difficulty level of 37.04%, and the easiest indicator was Unnecessary Words, with a percentage of 29.37%.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out and explain in detail how LIA teachers in West Sumatera apply flipped learning since this institution has successfully applied this learning process since 2018 (even before the Pandemic). This study also found problems faced by LIA teachers in conducting flipped learning and ways to solved the problems. An ethnographic research was conducted to study how teachers in LIA applied flipped learning since it is considered as an in-depth study of a particular group of people in their own environment. The researchers observed their routines activities, participated in their activities, and conducted in-depth interviews. Moreover, the researchers studied not only observed the teachers but also all component that supported the implementation of flipped learning in LIA. There were 3 LIA branches and there were 7 teachers observed (3 teachers are in LIA Padang, 2 teachers are in LIA Bukittinggi, and the others are from LIA Payakumbuh). From the research, it was found that Flipped learning in LIA is compulsory. All teachers need to follow the guidance and procedures that has been instructed by the TTD (Teachers Training Development). However, different teachers have different techniques in fulfilling every step of the procedures. This research explains the guidance and steps of how flipped materials implemented in LIA. It can be a great source for other teachers to find out how to apply it in their own class.

Abstract

This research was aimed to test roundtable based digital technology and self efficacy in increasing the ability of  writing  analytical exposition text.The research design of this study was a quasi experimental design. The population was the second grade in the university . Two classes were randomly selected as the sample of the study. During the treatment, students in experimental group used roundtable based digital technology, while students in control group used small grup discussion. Objective: To improve the ability of writing analytical exposition text on the second grade  at University of Syedza Saintika  Padang using roundtable berbasis teknologi digital san self efficacy. This technique is one way to improve writing analytical exposition text, so that the students knowledge to produce a good writing in analytical exposition text. Method: This study used quasi-experiments. Data using writing test and questionnaire. Statistical Test using t-test. Data analysis was presented to illustrate project based learning through roundtable dan self efficacy  on second grade student’ writing analytical exposition.. Result : the results showed that there were differences writing ability analytical exposition text after being given roundtable based digital technology.  Conclusion: Research is expected to provide more opportunities for students to develop their writing ability.
