Abstract

The management of domestic liquid waste disposal in Palangka Raya City which has not been carried out properly and flowed directly to the drainage has resulted in the flow becoming polluted. The polluted drainage around the Sakan - Mendawai road will have an impact on the water quality of the Kahayan River because it is directly connected to the drainage estuary without prior management. The decline in water quality will of course also have an impact on the quality of the health of the surrounding community who use water from the stream. This research was conducted to determine the quality of domestic wastewater in the drainage flow and how it relates to the water quality of the Kahayan River and the quality of public health around the City of Palangka Raya. The research method was carried out by testing the quality of wastewater and water quality of the Kahayan River. The test parameters consisted of pH, BOD, COD, TSS, Oil-Fat, Ammonia and total Coliform. The test results are compared with the applicable quality standards, and further analysis is carried out. The results showed that the domestic wastewater discharged from the drainage stream could not be channeled directly into the Kahayan River without any management because the BOD, COD, TSS and Ammonia parameters had exceeded the threshold for domestic wastewater quality standards. In terms of public health quality, poor water quality has the potential to become a breeding ground for disease germs that can infect the people who live nearby.

Abstract

One of common problem in fishing industry is a high mortality rate of juvenile fish during transportation. The present research aimed to study the characteristics of palm oil activated carbon and its effect on the changes of water quality that can improve the survival rate of juvenile catfish (Pangasius sp.). During study, juvenile catfish was transported for 48 hours by a simulation in the room with two different treatments: water tanks supplied with granulated and powder activated carbon and one control. Results of FTIR analysis showed that the activated carbon contained several functional groups such as Alkanes, Carboxylic Acid and Amina. Activated carbon element content resulted from the SEM analysis consisted of C, O, Si, N, Zr, Cu, Al and K. After transformed as activated carbon, we found that water and organic C contents in oil palm shell decreased and, reversely, the ash content increased. The study revealed that the activated carbon powder was better to improve survival rate of juvenile catfish and maintain water quality compared to granule ones where the survival rates after 48 hour transportation were 47,5%, 11% and 0% with treatments of powdered activated carbon, granulated activated carbon and control, respectively.

Abstract

Abstract

People who have lived in watersheds for a long time rely on fish and wood for their livelihoods, but these resources are still getting worse because of people. On the one hand, growth keeps going, and the population keeps growing yearly without anyone stopping it. This means that market demand keeps increasing, which makes people using the watershed do too much fishing and logging. Along the Sebangau watershed, social and environmental problems are now, such as the loss of peat swamp forest land cover and fewer fish. There are also social and cultural problems, such as the incomes of the people who really do sustainable fishing are still decreasing. To solve these complicated and interconnected problems, we need methods from different fields that work together. The system dynamics methodology is one way to figure out policy scenarios for how watersheds will be used in the future in a complicated, dynamic way that involves many parts and pieces. System dynamics can make the behaviour of the environmental management system easier to understand and model. This helps area managers and the government devise other ways to make decisions about the future. Palangka Raya University's academics did this study to give TNS managers and local governments information about climate change and the global environment and to predict symptoms or events that are bad for the people, nation, and state of RI. This study is about the University of Palangka Raya's Principal Scientific Pattern (PIP), the Development of Science and Technology in Tropical Peat Swamp Areas and River Streams, also known as Science and Technology Innovation.
