Abstract

The primary aim of this research is to enhance understanding of autoethnographic perspectives in artistic research. It also seeks to explore the contributions, challenges, and potential of this approach in expanding creative knowledge. Certain artists may perceive the evaluation of their own artworks as excessively subjective, which may lead to doubts regarding the scientific rigor of the subsequent research. This study examines various autoethnographic models within artistic research and their application in previous studies. Employing a qualitative framework, this study utilizes a literature review approach. Content analysis was employed to extract data from relevant documents, while meta-synthesis was used for comprehensive analysis. This study uncovers that there are four distinct kinds of autoethnographic approaches: realistic, impressionistic, expressionistic, and conceptualistic. These models provide several frameworks that can be utilized for studies focused on artwork, practice, studio, and reflective experiences, particularly in relation to the subjective experiences of creators. This study discovered a theory of artistic experience that is strongly linked to the fusion of the artistic research model and the autoethnographic approach model. This research has profound implications for broadening art research approaches, enhancing comprehension of the creative process, promoting critical cultural analysis, producing novel theories of artist experience, and fostering future art and autoethnographic research.

Abstract

This research explores the philosophical and symbolic value of Bedawang Nala in Balinese architectural art and the development of its narrative in fiction films based on Hindu mythology. Bedawang Nala, depicted as a giant fire-haired turtle with dragons Anantabhoga and Basuki, reflects cosmic balance and natural harmony in Tri Hita Karana. This qualitative research uses an interdisciplinary perspective involving the views of cultural studies and the creativity of film art creation. Data was obtained through in-depth interviews to explore the meaning and connection of the Bedawang Nala concept with environmental themes, audiovisual observations of traditional Balinese architecture, and literature studies on Bedawang Nala and ecological issues. Data were analyzed using interview transcript interpretation techniques to identify main themes related to the philosophical and symbolic values of Bedawang Nala, audiovisual analysis, and literature synthesis that connects findings from interviews and observations with current discussions about ecological education. The findings show that the Bedawang Nala mythology is not just an aesthetic ornament but has an educational value relevant to contemporary environmental issues. The development of this mythology-based film narrative can be an effective academic and cultural reflection tool, strengthening ecological awareness in society. This research suggests making and evaluating films based on Bedawang Nala and exploring other local mythologies to increase the educational impact and environmental awareness through film media.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to uncover the aesthetic meaning in the Sentani Tribe's Isolo tradition in Lake Sentani, Papua. The study focused on how the artistic aspects of Isolo represent essential creative meanings and what the important implications of artistic meanings in the Isolo tradition are for the development of the archipelago's sustainable maritime culture. This study employs a qualitative technique based on Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Data was gathered through observation of Isolo performances during the 2023 Lake Sentani Festival, interviews, and literature searches. The following are the study's findings: First, creative components such as dance moves, singing, clothes, property, and body painting motifs demonstrate symbolic connotations of natural prosperity, patriotism, spirituality, and fraternity. Second, the key meanings in Isolo derive from the concept of Rokhabia, a sense of brotherhood of one womb that is deeply established in Sentani tradition. Third, the implications of the Isolo tradition might build Sentani tribe social relationships through the meaning of the elements in its artistic representation. This study contributes significantly to expanding the horizon of the Sentani Tribe's Isolo heritage in preserving Indonesia’s sustainable maritime culture.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the significant changes in Balinese shadow puppetry (wayang) resulting from the integration of technology in the global era. While the introduction of technology has opened new opportunities for the development of Balinese wayang, there are concerns that its use may undermine traditional values, affect the creativity of the puppeteers, and potentially threaten the preservation of this art form. Based on this, the study poses two main research questions: (1) How does technology influence the creativity of Balinese wayang in the global era? and (2) What are the impacts on the preservation and advancement of Balinese wayang? This qualitative research employs data collection methods such as observation, interviews, and literature review. The data were analyzed descriptively and interpretively, supported by creativity theory. The results indicate that technology has stimulated boundless innovation in Balinese wayang, leading to more engaging audio-visual performances. Moreover, the use of technology has contributed to the resurgence of the wayang-watching culture in Balinese society, while supporting the sustainability of this art form in the global era.
