Abstract

The problem investigated was the shift in the nation’s approach to thepolicy of villages after the reign of New Order. In this era, the policy ofdemocratization and decentralization appeared till the village level. However, thepolicy was not totally implemented in the villages. The aims of this study are: todescribe democracy transformation in the village governance in the transition era, toclarify autonomy transformation in the village governance in the transition era, and toanalyze the implication and the sense of democracy and autonomy transfor mation tothe development of village governance. This study was conducted employing qualitative method. Various forms ofdemocracy and autonomy transformation in the village governance took place duringthe transition era. In the first stage, the primary and secondary data were collected. Inthe second stage, the theory applied for examining the data was chosen, and in thethird stage, the collected and classified data were analyzed and interpreted. In thefourth stage the results of the study were reported and constructed. The theoriesapplied in this study include; democracy, political democracy, substantial democracy, decentrali zation and political culture. The approaches applied were Tranpolitic andpost-structuralism.The results of the study showed that; first, the village democracy in the firsttransition era (1998-1999) was mostly still uniform, and there were not many choicesin the implementation of the village democracy. The village autonomy was stillblocked in centralistic pattern, homogeneous with hierarchical structure. Second, inthe second transition era (2000-2004) the role of the village representatives became sodemocratic accompanied by the extended village autonomy. Third, in the thirdtransition era (2005-2008) democracy became retransformed to the procedural patternaccompanied by the strengthening of supra village government power decreasing theautonomy of the villages. Fourth, democracy and autonomy transformationcontributed to the demand for the strengthening of democracy institutions, bettercommunity participation and more accountable public services, transparence and responsiveness to what was needed by the people. Fifth, democracy and villageautonomy transformation, in addition to having the sense of involving the activeparticipation of the society in the village governance, also had the sense ofstrengthening the civil and political society in every village social organization whichactualized what was needed by the society. This condition at the same timefunctioned as the responses to nation’s hegemony through the supra villagegovernment which took place until the first transition era.

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0, the Covid-19 Pandemic, and the Society 5.0 are global phenomena that are driving social change towards a new era of the world society. Hindus also have to carry out adaptation strategies, both at the structural and cultural level in order to enter this new era. Sociological reflections on Hindu adaptation strategies are expressed through the phenomenological method which emphasizes the individual agency dimension and its integration with structural dynamics. The ability of Hindus to exercise control dialectics on the acceleration of information technology, ideological regulation and socio-cultural structures change in the new era is a determinant of success in their adaptation strategy.

Abstract

The tradition of reading, singing, and interpreting religious literary texts gave birth to a didactic method called dharmagita. However, the implementation of the dharmagita tends to prioritize the aesthetic dimension, rather than the didactic dimension, so that it has the potential to hinder the transformation of religious texts in the context of religiosity. This article aims to reveal the semiotics of dharmagita as a strategic transformation of religious texts in the context of modern society. The study was conducted using a qualitative method based on a sociology of literature approach. The results of the study show that modernization affects traditional values so that adaptation strategies are needed so that people are able to follow changes without losing moral and spiritual control. Dharmagita has a transformative role to enlighten society with values in religious texts that are relevant to modern culture. In this context, improving the semiotic skills of dharmagita activists has an important role to optimize their ability to understand, interpret, and contextualize religious literary texts in actual-practical life.

Abstract

The success of a country's development and progress is almost entirely measured according to the categories constructed by the West. The stratification of developed and developing countries has become a discourse that strengthens the hegemony of the West over non-Western countries. This classification has ignored the cultural reality that every nation has its view of the success of development by the goals and ideals of its own life. For Eastern people, material progress is not the only measure for the success of development because they have a more essential orientation, namely the happiness of the soul. Balinese people also believe that the purpose of human life is to achieve material well-being (jagadhita) as well as spiritual happiness (moksa) integrally. This means that development must be carried out holistically to realize these goals. Through a literature review of the Purana Bali, six important concepts for holistic and sustainable development of Bali were found, namely Sad Kertih which includes Atma Kertih, Jana Kertih, Jagat Kertih, Danu Kertih, Samudra Kertih, and Wana Kertih. These six concepts are correlated with the Tri Hita Karana (three causes of happiness) including parhyangan, pawongan, and palemahan. Sad Kertih became one of the sociocultural and local geniuses of the Balinese people to face Western hegemony in development, as well as to realize the harmony of civilization.

Abstract

This study examines cultural poverty in the lives of economically poor Hindus in Karangasem Regency. Poverty is a serious problem in Karangasem Regency, such that until the present time Karangasem Regency occupies the top position as the region with the highest number of poor people in Bali Province. Various efforts have been made to alleviate poverty but the difficulty of poverty reduction in Karangasem Regency is inseparable from the occurrence of cultural poverty, such as the values, attitudes, and behavior of the poor who are, in this case, predominantly Hindus. This article discusses some of the reasons for the occurrence, forms and implications of cultural poverty.

Abstract

The pursuit of the education finds its ultimate result on the building of character and discipline. Both are the weapons to eclipse the ‘war’ of ideology within the world of education, i.e. between the positivism against the humanism. There are four characteristics in this regard: (1) the significance of the intelligence-creativity-inovation-reflection; (2) the enforcement of spirituality and ethics; (3) being appreciative, tolerant, and care one another; and (4) having sense of helpfulness and physical exercise.

Abstract

Civilization as a representation of the moral commitment of goodness to its citizens [singular and plural] is then used as a reference in the concept of living together. Meanwhile, It is also the source of appreciation, creativity, and expressing feelings. As a valuable moral commitment, it re- quires its adherents to nurture, preserve, and interpret it in the best way according to their meth- odology. The number of ways available to interpret the value have opened up the possibility of po- larization of meaning, so it may open the possibility of bias and differences in the interpretation of a value, moreover, if external factors have contributed to the polarization of how to interpret the value.

Abstract

Abstract

Putru Pasaji keeps a wealth of knowledge and wisdom of the archipelago's ancestors, especially regarding Hindu eschatology. The eschatological discourse in this text interrelates with other discourses, including morality. The construction of moral discourse in Putru Pasaji is studied using discourse theory with a constructivist approach. Moral discourse has an important position in Putru Pasaji because it is related to the pitara's life after death. Heaven and hell are determined by the results of the actions and the moral quality of the pitara during his lifetime. The moral teachings in Shiva-Buddha construct moral discourse in its eschatological interrelations in a holistic and integral manner
