Abstract

Pandemi COVID-19 telah mengubah proses belajar mengajar dari yang awalnya dilakukan dengan tatap muka di dalam kelas ke sistem belajar daring melalui platform-platform yang banyak tersedia saat ini. Abstract

One sort of speaking behavior that puts the other person's face in danger is prohibiting; therefore, a strategy is needed in saying it so that the interlocutor does not lose face when interacting. The purposes of this study were to characterize the lingual form of speech act of prohibition and the politeness strategies employed in the Minangkabau language to communicate prohibition. The data was taken from the interaction of Minangakabau people who live in Bukittinggi area of West Sumatra. The results demonstrated that prohibiting is realized in three modes of utterances namely declarative, interrogative for indirect speech act of prohibition and imperative form for direct speech act of prohibition. In addition, the politeness strategy used when expressing the speech act of prohibiting consists of bald on records, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategy. It is challenging to conclude that a certain technique is unique to a given context because, in general, the choice of each method depends highly on the utterance's context.

Abstract

Literary translation presents a unique challenge as it involves not only transferring meaning but also preserving the style, nuances, and cultural context of the original text. While automated translation technologies, such as Google Translate and ChatGPT, are increasingly used, questions remain about their ability to maintain meaning, aesthetics, and cultural integrity in literary texts. This study compares the English translations of the short story Gerhana Mata produced by both tools, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses. A digital hermeneutics approach is used to explore how meaning and cultural context are conveyed in these translations. The research employs a qualitative, comparative design to assess the accuracy of meaning, fluency, and the ability of both tools to preserve literary style and nuances. The results highlight the importance of translation techniques such as transposition, modulation, and adaptation in maintaining grammatical accuracy and cultural relevance. In this study, ChatGPT demonstrates superior performance compared to Google Translate in preserving the original text’s meaning and aesthetic quality. This research contributes to the field of automatic translation, offering insights into how AI tools can be improved for literary translation and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Due to their content and ways of expression, several speech acts have the potential to threaten the participant's face during an interaction. Mitigating devices can be employed to reduce the harmful effects of these face-threatening acts (FTAs). In this study, the researchers focused on interactions between sellers and buyers in the traditional market in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera, which makes use of the colloquial Minangkabau language. This descriptive qualitative research was aimed at investigating the mitigation functions that exist in buying and selling interactions. In addition, it sought to identify the different types of mitigation strategies used by participants. Research data was collected by recording the exchanges between sellers and buyers. To complete the data, a questionnaire was also handed out to Minangkabau-speaking sellers and buyers in Bukittinggi's traditional market. The data analysis technique used in this study was contextual analysis, which involved evaluating the data that had been collected, recognizing it, and classifying it using the dimensions of context. The result showed that the face of the interlocutor was protected in this purchasing and selling encounter using a variety of mitigating devices. The most commonly used mitigation device is indirect speech. Other techniques, including disclaimers, impersonal constructions, hedges, euphemisms, question tags, and apologies, were also found as mitigation devices used by communicators. The purpose of using these mitigation devices is to carry out mitigation functions such as self-defense, prevention, or repair. Both the buyer and the seller are capable of carrying out all of these functions.
