Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the language functions in the visual novel Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney by Shu Takumi using Jakobson's (1960) theory of language functions. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method to examine the data. Based on the analysis, the researchers identified four of the six language functions proposed by Jakobson within the visual novel. The most dominant language function found is the conative function, with the highest percentage of 24 instances (36.4%). The second most frequent is the referential function, which appears in 19 instances (28.8%). The emotive function ranks third, with 14 instances (21.2%). Lastly, the phatic function appears the least, with 9 instances (13.6%). These findings indicate that the conative function plays a central role in the visual novel, highlighting its focus on influencing the listener's actions or responses. The presence of other functions, such as referential, emotive, and phatic, also reflects the dynamic and interactive nature of the dialogue in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the illocutionary speech acts performed by the main character, Miles Morales, in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and to interpret how these acts contribute to the construction of his identity. The data source consists of Miles Morales’ utterances throughout the film. The study applies Searle’s classification of speech acts as its theoretical framework, which includes five categories: assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. Using a qualitative descriptive method within a pragmatic approach, data were collected through careful observation and transcription of relevant dialogue. The collected utterances were then classified and analyzed based on the five types of illocutionary acts. The findings are presented in the form of percentages to show the distribution of each speech act category. The results indicate that assertive (36%) and expressive (32%) acts are the most frequently used, followed by directive (28%) and commissive (4%), with no declarative acts identified. These findings suggest that Miles Morales constructs his identity largely through statements of belief and emotional expression, reflecting a character in emotional transition and self-discovery. Therefore, illocutionary acts in this film not only serve pragmatic functions but also play a crucial role in representing character identity within popular media narratives.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe critical discourse on text elements and social cognition on learning interest in online news texts during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia on The Jakarta Post website. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. This study uses Teun Van Dijk's Critical Discourse Analysis theory, namely text analysis and social cognition. The results show that the three analyzed texts show that the macrostructure of The Jakarta Post uses appropriate and representative themes, as well as the superstructure uses neutral headlines. Microstructure analyzes the semantic, syntactic, stylistic, and rhetorical elements that present their meaning directly without prologue at the semantic level, and at the syntactic level, it uses an appropriate and systematic structure of subject or noun combinations, as well as the style of language used is simple. Whereas in the social cognition element, there is the ideology of The Jakarta Post journalists in producing a discourse in news texts. From the three news reports, the pro-government journalists can be seen from all the decisions made by the government towards schools, parents, and students regarding interest in learning during the COVID-19 pandemic which was dominated by the government in the text. In this case, students' interest in learning was low during the pandemic. This was due to the power of government and the ideology of The Jakarta Post journalists so that the COVID-19 pandemic became a top priority, no longer a learning interest or maximizing education.
