Abstract

Learning interventions are mostly carried out by teachers in accommodating students' learning needs according to their characteristics because they can help students in improving their thinking. One form of learning intervention carried out by the teacher is through a question submission. Asking is the most common verbal communication behavior used in teaching. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach because it is based on the research objective, finding out the use of questions by novice and experienced teachers in intervening mathematics class interactions. The subjects in the study were two novice teachers and two experienced teachers. The instruments used were observation sheets and interview guides which had been validated by the validator and declared feasible as research instruments. Checking the validity of the data using method triangulation and data source triangulation. The results of the study show that the use of questions by novice teachers and experienced teachers is still limited to uncovering operational knowledge and basic knowledge, not metacognitive knowledge, they are still using questions with the aim of remembering content that has been previously studied and providing calculation results and have not been able to encourage them to think critically, creatively as well as cultivating conceptual understanding and generating ideas and not directing and building student understanding  so that there is a need for training to improve the quality of teachers in mastering techniques for asking questions to students in order to develop and strengthen teachers' pedagogical abilities considering the importance of teachers' pedagogical abilities in implementing the learning process and asking questions in intervening in mathematics class interactions can encourage students to think critically and creatively and foster understanding. concepts and generate ideas and can direct and build their understanding well in order to compete in a global scope.

Abstract

The ability to understand mathematics is a faculty crucial to be possessed by pre-service teachers who will enter into the education sphere. It is one of the professional competencies essential for teachers since satisfactory lessons’ delivery engenders more comprehensible instruction in teachers’ students. Qualitative research employs a descriptive approach relevant to the research purpose, describing mathematics pre-service teachers’ professional competency of understanding the concept toward probability observed based on mathematical abilities; advanced, intermediate, and basic mathematics ability. The subjects are three preservice teachers having passed discrete mathematics course in a college in Madura. The criteria to select the subjects are the GPA (Grade-point Average) of the last semester and information from the lecturer. It is because unlikely to administer the test due to online learning applied at the college. Findings indicated that the subject with advanced mathematics ability could meet individual concepts, relate concepts and connect concepts with the operations. The subject with intermediate mathematics ability could meet individual concepts, but could not relate to some concepts. However, he could connect concepts with the operations. The subject with basic mathematics ability could not meet individual concepts, relate concepts, and connect concepts with the operations. In terms of the advancement indicator of understanding the concept, the subjects have not attained it since they have not apprehended concept definition well, particularly the probability concept, although the subject with advanced mathematics ability was procedurally prodigious.

Abstract

Abstract

Mathematics is a vital means needed by students to solve various problems, both personal and social, and it is required to succeed in work. Thus, students are highly expected to possess good mathematical literacy. In the 21st Century, most of parents would rather choose pesantren-based schools for their children since they believe that theirs will have chance to acquire universal and religious sciences, at once, for their life. Further, the current research was aimed to investigate level of algebraic literacy among pesantren-based senior high school students, along with its determinant factors. Qualitative research method was employed by means of descriptive approach. Moreover, there were 30 students involved in the research; all of which were the twelfth graders of Science Class of a pesantren-based senior high school in Madura, Indonesia. To collect data, two instruments were used: algebraic literacy test and guideline to interview with the Math teacher and the Vice Principal of Curriculum Affairs. The results showed that level of algebraic literacy among students was dramatically low, with 94% of whom classified in below Level 1, 3% in Level 2, and 3% in Level 3. Moreover, lack of student’s focus in learning Mathematics was one of possible causes of it as the students were strongly demanded to learn about two major sciences at once. Therefore, any endeavors for betterment from the teacher and institution are needed to make algebraic literacy among students get improved; one of which can be by integrating pesantren and national education curricula.
