Abstract

Over the past decade, tourism development in the Lake Toba region has surged significantly. However, this growth often overlooks local wisdom, ecological sustainability, and the spiritual foundations of the local community. Lake Toba is not merely a natural tourist destination but a living space rich in cultural and religious significance. Its majestic landscape holds great potential as a site for interreligious and intercultural dialogue, and can even be interpreted as a cosmic scripture that resonates with harmony and spiritual openness. This study aims to explore and describe how Lake Toba can be strengthened as a space for interfaith and intercultural dialogue, and to analyze how the HKBP Church, as the majority Christian community in the region, can develop a contextual theology of tourism and religious moderation. A qualitative research method was employed, using a historical-critical and contextual hermeneutical approach to Psalm 19:2–5. This was complemented by in-depth interviews with informants representing subjective readers and interpretive communities. The theoretical framework is based on Stephen Bevans’ contextual theology, particularly his three models: translation, anthropological, and praxis. The findings indicate that: (1) nature, as viewed through the lens of the Psalm, is not merely an aesthetic backdrop but a divine revelation that invites spiritual encounter; and (2) spiritual tourism can serve as a means of social transformation, creating space for religious tolerance and moderation that strengthens social cohesion. In conclusion, religion should play an active role in tourism development, particularly by: (1) establishing nature-based liturgical programs and ecological spiritual education within the church; and (2) positioning itself as a cultural and environmental steward by promoting sustainable spiritual tourism in which spirituality, nature conservation, and respect for local traditions are harmoniously integrated.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to show that a deeper comprehension of Sahala, its cultural background, and Batak church leadership will provide insights into the various potential impacts of integrating sensors and algorithms into sociocultural practices. This study employed a qualitative research approach and descriptive methods. The choice of a qualitative paradigm is based on the study's aim to investigate and describe the identified issues, specifically the functions of the church leader and the church through Sahala. The purpose of qualitative research is to provide an in-depth analysis or description of a phenomenon, drawing from the significance derived from observed occurrences. This research reveals evolving church leadership dynamics in the age of artificial intelligence. As technology advances rapidly, church leaders must demonstrate adaptability and situational awareness. They need to modify their leadership approaches to strike a balance between traditional and modern methods. The study also underscores the necessity of ethically incorporating Sahala into AI systems. When considering the use of AI to integrate Sahala into genetic parenting, it is crucial to ensure that the technology respects traditions and has the potential to foster the development of genuine individuals. Moreover, community involvement is essential to incorporate their viewpoints into the technology's development process. Technologies that disregard community input pose significant moral risks, which can only be properly evaluated and mitigated through active engagement with the community

Abstract

Technological developments, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming human life, including in the context of the church. This article examines the relevance and identity of the church in the AI era using a biblically based theological approach, specifically the human cultural mandate (imago Dei) and the warning against human pride (the Tower of Babel). This research uses qualitative methods through literature study and biblical analysis. The results show that AI can expand mission reach, increase efficiency, and personalize ministry, but also raise theological and ethical challenges, such as dehumanization, algorithmic bias, and the risk of degradation of personal relationships. The essence of the church as a relational community living in the love of Christ, as well as the sacraments and the role of the pastor, remain irreplaceable. This article provides a new reflective-theological framework for understanding AI as a strategic opportunity without obscuring the essence of the church, thus contributing to the development of digital ecclesiology discourse in the context of contemporary theology.

Abstract

This study highlights the urgency of a migrant theological reading of John 4:1–40 in light of global forced migration and marginalization, aiming to provide a relevant theological framework for the contemporary church. Employing a qualitative approach through exegetical, historical, and theological analysis of John’s narrative, combined with contextual reflection on the experiences of Indonesian migrant workers in Seberang Perai, Malaysia, the study demonstrates that Jesus’ journey through Samaria (dei) represents a divine imperative to cross ethnic, gender, and social boundaries. His encounter with the Samaritan woman reveals the promise of “living water” as a new identity that liberates the marginalized from social stigma. The study concludes that the church is called to become a “modern Jacob’s well,” a space of encounter, solidarity, and empowerment that transforms migrants from passive recipients into active agents of mission, while affirming an ecclesiology centered on migrants and the shared identity of believers as “pilgrim people” in Christ.

Abstract

The Diversity is a real context for the existence of the church in the world. In the Indonesian context, diversity concerns the richness of culture, religion, ethnicity, country, and so on. Indonesia has diversity that must be responded to by all people living in the archipelago, especially because of the richness of ethnic groups and their traditions, customs, cultural riches, and so on. In efforts to respond to diversity, churches in Indonesia really need to develop insight regarding pluralism. This is also an effort to minimize radicalism movements in the name of religion. Within this framework, the church has the responsibility to maintain diversity within the Christian community itself. The solution includes promoting inclusivity in order to build a space for dialogue for all religions and beliefs. Keywords: Challenge of Religious Radicalism, Plurality in Indonesia
