Abstract

In recent years—and even dating back to the 1970s and 1980s—the Indonesian horror film genre has consistently drawn large audiences to theaters. Conceptually, this study examines this phenomenon by employing Max Horkheimer’s theory of rational and irrational dialectics, Jean Baudrillard’s concept of simulacrum, and Textual Analysis applied to horror film posters and narratives from the 1970s to the 2000s, alongside select Asian horror films that resonate with audiences. The rational and irrational dialectic emerges prominently in Indonesian horror films, as viewers grapple with the interplay between reality and the supernatural depicted in posters and narratives that serve as simulacra, ultimately becoming modern myths. Philosophically, this dialectic presents a dilemma where humans navigate rationality and irrationality in attempting to dismiss mythological elements. Simulacrum, in this context, represents a duplication without an original, blurring the line between the copy and the real. Textual Analysis, rooted in media and cultural studies, is employed here as a methodology for examining texts that contain meaningful signs. Most Indonesian horror film posters and narratives feature terrifying creatures without real-world references. As a result, despite a dip in popularity during the 1990s, horror films from the 1970s through the 2000s have frequently achieved high viewership, especially those based on legendary tales familiar to audiences. These recurring themes, perpetuated through film posters and narratives, are further reinforced by makeup, animation techniques, and CGI (Computer Generated Imagery), all of which bring the horror elements to life.

Abstract

This study investigates how Instagram serves as a public service communication tool for LRT Jabodebek, a new urban rail transit system in Greater Jakarta, Indonesia. The research aimed to analyze the platform’s role in disseminating information, engaging users, and improving service delivery. Using a descriptive qualitative method, non-participant observation and documentation analysis were conducted on the official Instagram account @lrt_jabodebek between April and June 2025. From 461 posts, eight were selected based on engagement metrics, including schedule updates, safety campaigns, ridership milestones, and feedback responses. Findings reveal that Instagram enhanced service through real-time updates, transparency, and public education. The account frequently shared schedules, addressed complaints, and promoted commuter etiquette and safety systems. Increased engagement correlated with higher ridership from March to May 2025. The study concludes Instagram is now a central communication channel for urban transport, recommending content diversification, faster responses, and cross-platform integration for greater effectiveness.

Abstract

Coverage of Seventeen's "Right Here" concert in Jakarta reported by online media Detik.com and Kompas.com. Through the selection, emphasis, and arrangement of information in news texts, mass media play an important role in shaping public opinion. In this study, a qualitative approach was used, and the framing analysis method of the Pan & Kosicki model (1993) was employed. This model includes four discourse structures: syntax, script, thematic, and rhetorical. Data was collected from eight news articles published from February 4-10, 2025. The results of the analysis showed that Detik.com framed the news in a sensational style, emphasized conflict and public emotions, and used quotes from social media. Meanwhile, Kompas.com framed the issue with a neutral narrative style, emphasizing institutional information structures and official statements. Both media show their own journalistic features through their framing. This study found that framing shapes social meanings and perceptions of popular culture events in addition to conveying facts. These results support mass communication research and show how important media literacy is to understand the construction of reality made by online media.

Abstract

This study uses Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to investigate the representation of moral values in the movie Boleh Boleh Sekali Sekali Kumenangis. The movie contains relevant social issues such as emotional trauma, family conflict, and courage to face the pressure of patriarchal culture. This is the reason why this movie was chosen. Semiotic analysis was used, with an emphasis on denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings that appear in the visual story, dialog, and gestures of the characters. The research shows that the visual symbols, character changes, and internal conflict dynamics show moral values such as courage, emotional honesty, and responsibility. Tari, the main character, serves as a representation of women's courage to break the chain of domestic violence, and her father serves as a representation of self-awareness to admit mistakes. The results show that movies can be an effective tool for teaching morals and also a place for social thinking. This study reaches the conclusion that Barthes' semiotic approach is relevant to examine films as ideological and non-neutral cultural products. It is hoped that this study will become a reference for the study of film, communication, and character education in Indonesia.

Abstract

In this era, beauty has become a major issue, especially among women who are often required to meet certain standards. This phenomenon, which is often depicted in Korean dramas, can lead to discrimination against women who do not conform to the ideal image. This study aims to analyze the representation of discrimination based on beauty standards in the Korean drama True Beauty, which explicitly shows different treatment based on physical appearance. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data was collected through observation and documentation of seven scenes depicting discriminatory behavior. The analysis was conducted using John Fiske’s semiotic approach, which examines meaning at the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. The results of the study show that discrimination is represented through eight aspects of social rejection at the level of reality. At the representation level, production techniques amplify the emotional impact. At the ideology level, the drama reflects the perspective of lookism, where beauty determines an individual’s social value. This research is supported by Jon Gunnar Bernburg’s Labeling Theory, which explains how individuals labeled with social labels experience discrimination.
