Abstract

This study was intended to describe teachers’ perceptions and practices of questioning strategies to promote students’ critical thinking in EFL classroom. It was a descriptive qualitative research that investigated two English teachers who taught at eighth grade of Junior High School in Trenggalek. Interview and observation were conducted to collect data in order to answer research questions. The findings showed that; first, two teachers who became participants of this study had positive perceptions that practicing appropriate questioning strategies could stimulate students to think critically in learning process, and second, the teachers applied some types of questioning strategies, those were, wait-time, probing, prompting, and reinforcement. In  conclusion, reffering to the issue of promoting students’ critical thinking as a result of recent curriculum (K-13), teacher’s questioning strategies was useful to be considered in teaching and learning process, and teachers’ perceptions was one of factors that influence their’ practices in classroom context.

Abstract

This study is about the effect of rationale application usage as innovative learning application to help the students being critical thinker in writing argumentative text. It was attempted to investigate (1) whether there is any significant difference between students reasoning ability, (2) whether there is any significant difference between students structuring ability, and (3) whether there is any significant difference between students analyzing ability who are taught by using rationale application as found in their argumentative writing and those who are not taught without using rationale. To do so, a quasi-experimental designed was administered to a sample of University students (N=50). In order to answer the research questions, the data are analyzed by using independent sample t-test. SPSS 21 is used to do those statistical analysis. In conclusion, the findings showed that rationale application can be chosen as an alternative media of improving critical thinking in argumentative writing. It was proved by the findings of the study that bring us to the point that there was a significant difference on the students’ critical thinking in some aspects (reasoning, structuring and analyzing ability) as found in their argumentative writing between learners in experimental and control group. Learners who are given rationale application treatment achieve higher than those who are given conventional method.

Abstract

This present study aimed at describing the students’ perception towards Madurese traditional culinary based teaching materials of English in higher education level in Sumenep Madura. This is a survey research which is triangulated with three instruments used in collecting data namely: observation field notes, questionnaire, and interview. The result showed that the English learning material which was equipped with Madurese traditional culinary got a positive perception and higher appreciation from the students in terms of materials’ attraction, materials’ usefulness, materials’ difficulty, materials’ variety, materials’ authenticity, and proportion of the four language skills. Further, the students can happily and enthusiastically join the English language learning. They said that they could recognize the madurese culinary deeper than before. In addition, traditional culinary can be used as the identity that can promote the region to overseas. Moreover, in terms of English language teaching, the traditional culinary can be used as valuable materials which can help to promote and maintain local wisdom.

Abstract

Bencana alam seperti gempa bumi, banjir, tanah longsor, gunung meletus, dan puting beliung sering terjadi di Indonesia dan umumnya terjadi tanpa adanya peringatan dini bencana. Banyaknya bencana alam menimbulkan banyak korban jiwa dan harta. Untuk mengurangi dan meminimalkan jumlah korban, masyarakat perlu disiapkan untuk menghadapi bencana. Literasi terkait mitigasi bencana perlu dilakukan untuk membuat masyarakat memahami apa yang perlu disiapkan dan dilakukan sebelum dan ketika bencana alam terjadi. Sebagai unit terkecil dalam masyarakat, keluarga mempunyai peran penting dalam literasi mitigasi bencana. Karena gempa bumi merupakan bencana alam yang paling banyak terjadi di Indonesia, PKM ini difokuskan pada pengembangan lembar kegiatan (LK) orang tua dan anak usia dini untuk mendukung literasi mitigasi bencana alam gempa bumi. LK dalam PKM ini disusun dengan bekerjasama dengan BPBD Jawa Timur dan LK yang dihasilkan diserahkan ke BPBD sebagai suplemen materi sosialisasi mitigasi bencana yang sudah dimiliki BPBD.
