Abstract

This research examines the role of self-efficacy in the use of information technology at SMKN 1 Kupang Barat. The study adopts a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative case study with quantitative methods using Likert scales. Participants include teachers and students actively using information technology in their learning processes. The research findings indicate varying levels of self-efficacy among participants, with the majority of teachers demonstrating high self-efficacy due to training and school management support. Students exhibit diverse levels of self-efficacy influenced by prior experience and access to devices. Analysis of the Likert scale questionnaires indicates a positive perception towards the use of technology in enhancing learning quality and preparing students for the future. Practical implications of this study include the necessity for ongoing teacher training, school management support, and optimization of technological resources to enhance the integration of information technology in learning at SMKN 1 Kupang Barat. Additionally, the study offers guidelines for the development of more effective educational policies in the future.

Abstract

This study examines the Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) of Wewewa students from Southwest Sumba, who are studying in Kupang, focusing on their adaptation to ecological changes. Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines qualitative phenomenological analysis and quantitative Likert scale surveys. Results show that most students prefer studying at night due to a quieter atmosphere and cooler temperatures. As many as 80% have at least intermediate-level technological skills, which facilitates access to digital learning resources. The dominant stress management strategies are exercise (65%), meditation (25%), and social support (10%). Findings indicate that urban ecological factors influence students' SRL and academic adaptation. This study highlights the need for institutional support programs to help rural students adapt to urban environments and provides insights into the relationship between environmental changes, learning strategies, and students' psychological well-being.

Abstract

In the context of digital globalization, this study explores the role of YouTube as a self-directed learning (SDL) tool to enhance speaking proficiency among English Education students at Citra Bangsa University in Indonesia. Recognizing that classroom-based speaking practice is often limited by structural and pedagogical constraints, the research investigates how learners independently engage with YouTube to improve pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and confidence. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from the sixth-semester students through semi-structured interviews, reflective journals, and speaking practice logs over a six-week period. Thematic analysis revealed that students employed diverse strategies such as imitation, shadowing, monologue creation, and video-based roleplay, drawing on a wide range of content from educational channels like BBC Learning English to informal vlogs and podcasts. Participants reported increased engagement, language awareness, and motivation. However, they also faced challenges including lack of feedback, difficulty in selecting level-appropriate materials, and digital distractions. Despite these limitations, the overall attitude toward YouTube-based learning was positive, highlighting the platform's potential to supplement formal instruction. The findings suggest that YouTube can serve as an effective tool for promoting learner autonomy and speaking competence when integrated with structured support and digital literacy training. This study contributes to the growing discourse on technology-enhanced language learning and underscores the need for guided self-directed learning models in EFL contexts.

Abstract

Migrant workers are a social group that is vulnerable to changes in language practices due to the need to adapt to new environments. This study aims to describe the domains of language use, language attitudes, and the factors underlying the maintenance of the Waijewa language among migrant workers from Wewewa subdistrict, Southwest Sumba, who reside in Denpasar, Bali. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by quantitative data. The main instrument was a questionnaire distributed to 22 respondents originating from five districts in Wewewa. The collected data were analyzed descriptively by calculating tendencies of language use, attitudes, and the dominant factors contributing to language maintenance. The findings reveal that the Waijewa language remains strong in domestic domains, particularly in the home, boarding houses, and communication with family through social media. However, its use tends to decline in public domains, which are predominantly influenced by Indonesian and Balinese. In terms of attitudes, almost all respondents expressed positive views toward the Waijewa language, demonstrated pride in its use, and emphasized the importance of transmitting it to future generations. The most influential factors in language maintenance are family roles, solidarity within the Sumbanese community, and cultural identity. Social media also contributes significantly, while workplace rules or policies show little influence. This study highlights that the maintenance of the Waijewa language in migration contexts is primarily supported by the internal strength of its speech community. Accordingly, the research contributes to the understanding of language maintenance dynamics of minority languages amid migration and the dominance of majority languages in multilingual urban settings.

Abstract

This research addresses the critical role of ritual discourse in maintaining the socio-cultural fabric of indigenous communities. It examines the intersection of language, ritual, and social structure through a transitivity analysis of Pembayun speech in Sasak wedding ceremonies in Lombok, Indonesia. Applying Systemic Functional Linguistics, the study delves into how specific process types manifest traditional mandates and maintain social equilibrium. By integrating qualitative-descriptive methods with quantitative frequency counts, this study provides a comprehensive analysis of 285 ritual clauses. The analysis reveals a strategic distribution of six process types: Material processes dominate (46.31%), representing social obligations and concrete actions required by customary law, while Relational processes (23.86%) function to validate hierarchical status. To ensure interpersonal harmony, Mental processes (12.28%) express respect and sincerity, and Verbal processes (10.18%) construct ritual dialogue by invoking traditional authority. Furthermore, the spiritual dimension is upheld through Existential processes (4.91%), while Behavioral processes (2.46%) manifest cultural conduct. The study concludes that Pembayun discourse is a sophisticated lexicogrammatical system that actively performs the social and sacred transitions of the Sasak people, illustrating how functional linguistic patterns preserve cultural heritage. It is recommended that future studies incorporate multimodal analysis to capture the non-verbal semiotics of the Sorong Serah ceremony and develop pedagogical frameworks for integrating ritual linguistics into local language preservation curricula.
